  1. Re:Tivo & Replay...too expensive on ReplayTV Quits Hardware Biz, Licenses Technology · · Score: 1

Actually, in October, the $300.00 14-hour Philips TiVo had a $100 Philips Rebate, and a $100 TiVo rebate, making it only $100. Not to mention that they had a TiVo-a-day (or was it 10 or 30 a day?) giveaway all October (is it still going on??). So there isn't much to complain about as far as price is concerned... You just have to find the deals.

TiVo and ReplayTV aren't that different. The only comparison I can think is that TiVo has the intelligent program that records programs it thinks you'd enjoy. I'm pretty sure this feature isn't available on the ReplayTV. I just think that people tried TiVo before ReplayTV and that is what killed it. As far as I know, TiVo is fairing quite well.

Out of all the developers for the Indremeda, especially the 'garage developer', how many will go ahead and make a linux PC port to their game? I can agree with this. The groups that would buy it for its 'open-ness' aren't nearly enough to make the indremeda profitable. Console gamers could care less about what's powering the system. All they care about is the performance of the games, and the graphics that are displayed.
Actually, I'm not very pleased with a linux console-like machine I have... My TiVo. It crashes all the time. Yes, I understand that its the software, not the operating system, but as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't work up to the standard it should. How will the Indremeda work as far as games? Any different??

But I'm a big FPS and football gamer. Quarterback Club 99, and Goldeneye/Perfect Dark where far better than any football/fps the PSX had.

I completely agree. Look at how badly the PS2 is being reviewed? They are only getting sold because of hype. When people play PS2 games then play dreamcast games, dreamcast wins. If you don't believe me, try it. Dreamcast has a better machine with better games... Sure PS2 has better hardware, but they aren't using the technology to the max, yet. PS2's only likable feature is its backward compatability.
Sega is reporting losses... just like everyone in the gaming industry. Why is everyone assuming that they will fail? Look at the reviews!

Maybe after the PS2's 'predicted failure', Sega may try one more console... its the future, anything is possible.

I truely believe that it would have been an advantage for both companies to work together. N64 appeals to the younger audience (13 years old and under), and dreamcast grabs most of the upper audience (18+). Combining these audiences would have a lasting effect in the console race. PS has the teenage population, but with the recent dissatisfaction for the new PS2, Nintendo/Sega could have taken this to their advantage.
The console race is getting bigger and better, and some of the names you once knew will start getting beat out. To survive with the sharks, you need to get an edge, and the combination might have been the edge.... oh well...

It all depends on the application.
Peer-to-peer works well in some instances, and star networks (server) works well in others. Just because more people see star networks working more often than peer-to-peer doesn't mean they are going to die.
    Two examples:
    1. Directly downloading a file from a friend. Peer-to-peer is by far the fastest way. The server would just be a middle man slowing you down.
    2. A FPS game would be incredibly laggy on a peer-to-peer because of the size of the overhead. The star-network is the better choice here.
If you think about it, the internet is kinda both a star and a p2p network. There is no 'one central server', but a Peer-to-peer network of servers. So the P2P type of connection is going to die? I don't think so...
