Apple probably barely wanted any cut. $0.30 to the labels, tops. And Pepsi probably has great marketting data indicating what percentage of customers are likely to follow through and sit down at their computer to collect winnings. If that's less than... say... 4% (and it could be), then Pepsi might be paying close to $0.01/song.

  9. Amen, brother. on Alarm Clocks for Heavy Sleepers? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Easy to snooze, but hard to accidentally turn off completely. Bonus points if turning it off means being cognizant enough to operate a screwdriver or tool of some kind.

I had exactly this problem. I solved it by getting an alarm clock loud enough to wake me up from across the room (RadioShack, $15 tops). Caltrops can be useful to make it so that walking across your room is difficult. Now I've trained myself pretty well to snooze rather than disable the alarm, but the walk across the room is helpful because it means that even getting up to hit snooze wakes me up a little.

When I was in a smaller room (everything could be reached without getting out of bed), I wrapped packing tape around the off button on the alarm. I could only hit snooze unless I removed the tape.

I can't tell you how many mornings I woke up struggling to remove that tape.

The only way I've ever had decent sleeping habits was when I spent time outdoors away from any artificial light. Within 24 hours, I perfectly adjusted to falling asleep at sundown and waking just before sun up. Weird to think that I was going to sleep at 8:30 PM and waking up at 5:00 AM without any prompting.

I wish I had the self control to do that normally.

Dunno about MechWarrior, but Halo is pretty easy on a gamepad. My assumption is just that you're very used to the mouse and keyboard combo, so it's a new approach to you and hard to handle.

And if that is your assumption, then you really don't understand why we're complaining. When people use a joystick for FPSs on PCs (and they do) they don't use it to replace the mouse. They use it to replace the keyboard. The mouse is at least an order of magnitude faster for aiming. You must judge (1) how far to move the joystick and (2) how long to hold it there. With a mouse, you must judge (1) how far to move the mouse. Muscle memory puts it at exactly that location. There is no angular distance that you would like to turn that takes more time than any other angular distance. If someone is behind you, the second that you notice it, they are in front of you.

Obviously, I could go on and on.

The joystick gives you all kinds of cool features that a keyboard does not. Keyboards are only completely required when you don't have voice chat. Otherwise, slap on enough buttons, and a controller can replace a keyboard..

Not a mouse. That can't be replaced by a trackball, a joystick, a touchpad, or anything else. Not for an FPS.

You're right, it's about gameplay. My desire for resolution is because certain types of gameplay are totally impossible without lots of visual information being presented to the player. Imagine Civ 3 at 512x384.
