    Hmmm. Actually, No.

    I live in Chicago, near North side. To go from door-of-home to door-of office takes me about 40 min by train. Walk 4 blks, ride the El, walk 2 blks.

    To do so by car would take me at least an hour...and then I would have to find parking, pay for it (it is 2x the price of a El ticket).

    Actually the most efficient form of transport in heavily urbanized areas is....THE BIKE.

    Chicago has a 18 mile long bike trail going from well into Evanston in the North to well South of the loop.

    Cars are the least efficient form of urban transport. Problem is yuppie pinheads are either...

    1-scared of the el.
    or
    2-get an ego-boost from their k-rad kar.
    or
    3-too scared to live in the city, so they live in the burbs and face a 2 hr commute.

    silly yuppies.

    Yeah, but programmers and hw designers do not like the number four. Windows 4 = Win95. Palm Pilot 4 = Palm 5. etc.

    Darwin is Mach + BSD layers. It will make Darwin more portable, but not necessarily the rest of Os-X (ie classic/carbon/quartz/aqua). Indeed, Darwin on x86 is already a reality.

    The price for this setup is indeed a speed hit.

    Hello,

    The next gen Mac OS is a Mach/BSD operating system. Apple, when they bought NeXT, started building OS_X on NeXTStep also a Mach/BSD OS.

    Also, BSD is a bit older than Linux.

    Precision is searching is good. Cutting time and getting exactly what you are looking for is good to. But how many times have you searched for foo, and come up with a great many inks for bar and really learned alot about bar? In a way, the imprecision of web searches makes the web really fun. I can not remember where it was posted (here?) but there was a little program that pointed you to totally random pages, and "played" them in your browser. Kind of like making random visual web music!     Ok, Troll,

    Since all you have done is supply your personal (read anecdotal) evidence and did not supply stats either, and resorted to the (ever so lame) ad homynym attack against me personally I do not know why I am bothering...but here it goes.

    1) MA in Philosophy from University of Illinois
    2) MA in History from University of SOugh Florida
    (kinda stepped in it here)
    3) http://www.apple.com has some stats from VERY
    complete new buyer surveys. 1/4 IMac buyers are new to personal computing and 1/3 are wintel converts. You can also watch the several Jobs keynote speeches over the last couple of years.
    4) people do not only change OS/platform because of (supposed) stability. If this were true, we would all abandon Linux and go to BSD or Solaris.
    There are form factors like aesthetics and fit and finish where the Mac shines. NEWS FLASH: Cool factor sells stuff.
    5) I am not your pal, buddy.
    6)I do not have data for Linux converts...But this is your job. Rather than expand your anecdotal evidence to ligitimate a trend when real proof is lacking, perhaps you can get ME some stats.
    7) I do not know why I am responding to a troll.

    4) Hardware (KB/Mice)
    5) Web/Servers/IE
    6) Productivity Apps
    7) Development Apps
    8) X-Box & Gaming SW/HW

    This will make MS Baby Bills about the size of any of their competitors.

    tell me again in three years. Maybe by then(Linux)it will no longer look like sad little Amiga^H^H^H^HUNIX clone. Or even more likely it will be dead and forgotten by then. I mean what is this? GUI: Amiga^H^H^H^HX Windows. Apps: GNU tools. Anything new? Well, the site is heavily slashdotted, but so far I haven`t seen anything excitingly new. Why is it that everyone has to split resources? there are quite some flavors of different operating systems ranging from Windows, OS2, BeOS, BSD, Unix in genral to Linux^H^H^H^H Minix. All of them developed for some time now. So why this new one? Shouldn`t we concentrate on whats already there? Shall we again take the pain of going back to basics or even below with an
    undeveloped OS? Or should we rather stick with the ones we have now and work together to
    make them succeed in the upcoming years? Maybe those analysts are right and there won`t even
    be that many PCs around in some years and it will be mostly about IAs. Where would AtheOS^H^H^H^HLinux fit
    in by then? Compared to Linux^H^H^HUnix Windows and BeOS?

    So...How many consumers want to run ssh or apache? How many want to run proxies or servers?

    Now...How many want to run Lookout and Exploiter. Also, Eudora ships with MacOS 9.

    You have got to be kidding.

    1)Serious 2D design is THE Mac market. BeOS, NT, Amiga and Linux combined do not have 1/4 Apples market share here. for 3D design, SGI all the way.

    2) Mac makes a very secure, but very poor performing server. Not because it is dumb, but because you can easily secure the box. This is more a sw isue, and not related to the PPC. It is the combo of Classic MacOS and WebSTAR.

    3)PPC is a next gen technology. x86 is yesterday's chip.

    4) The chip has little to do with what makes a beginner's pc. I can run BSD, Linux and have the same performance/functionality you do. I can also run Mac OS and get SUPERIOR font and color handling...stuff Windows/Linux can not touch.

    It depends on the state you are in. In Florida, the PD can impound your car for 1) buying or selling drugs in it. 2) soliciting prostitution from your car. 3) if your car was used in the crime (drive-by-shooting, getaway car). They can also take boats and planes and RVs.

    I guess it all depends on what you mean by powerful. The Mac OS has really been showing its age. For a few years. I am a daily user of Mac OS 9...and NT and BSD. Compared to NT and BSD, Mac OS is not powerful. Compared to writing on a typewriter, developing photos in a lab, keeping track of expenses in a ledger, balancing your checkbook manually, sending letters via snailmail, Mac OS is very powerful, and had/will continue to liberate people, make their lives more organized and also give them information at their command through th web. Maybe I am old, but I remember the advent of the personal computer. Even Mac OS 9 is powerful. Not that I am not looking forward to OS-X!

    But it is not illegal to be a monopoly. Microsoft is not being tried because they are a monopoly. They are being tried because they LEVERAGED that strength through PRODUCT TYING to stifle competition. Apple has done nothing to discourage, say, Office on MacOS to promote AppleWorks or to discourage Eudora to promote Claris E-Mailer.

    Interesting, but it did not work with Myst for the Mac.

    Now you can say, and I agree, that this entails buying another box to run the game. BUT, PC penetration was not that wodespread. This was in an era when many homes bought their first computer.

    Also, If Linux got a killer-game, a Myst for 2001, it would entail the installation of a too-difficult-to-install os, the setting up of partitions, etc that Joe user does not want to deal with.
