That's why you get insurance and build it into the price of the car. It's what happens when another appliance or tool takes a persons life (remember the quote from fight club about car manufacturer caused incidents "if number of incidents = x and average court settlement = y then if x * y 'price of recall' they don't do a recall). You have a valid point though, it will be the main hurdle; However, If we had everyone driving robot cars there would be a lot less deaths than there are now, i find it funny that, that is the reason progress will be slowed. As far as morality goes a simple rough calculation of sparing the most humans wouldn't be that hard.

I have no idea how many false negatives would be required (i'm not writing the software, although i doubt it would mark everyone), but there is potentially a level where you catch all terrorists and whatnot while leaving a manageable amount of false positives (which we know for the government is usually quite high).

Windows generally haven't really been for the noobs either (that's why IT departments are so big) if you want it to work well you have to be willing to dive into settings and commands. To put the start menu back in windows 8 (fixing 98% of user problems) you just have to type %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs into the new toolbar dialog box (to fix the other 2% you just need to delete programs); if that is too hard for the a lot windows users, i don't like your chances talking them through why their wifi card isn't working.

If the masses can't figure out how to use an os themselves within about 10 seconds they start rioting, anything remotely confusing would have to be deeply hidden (so they don't accidentally open command prompt and freak out), and good luck getting them to customize anything that isn't the simplest of GUI. The Linux crowd aren't paid enough to put up with those people, let apple or maybe MS do it.

Although it will undoubtedly cost more to make each unit than the big guys, there is much less overhead on the business or need for extreme profits (iphone costs something like $200 to make, even if the open phone cost twice that there is still a fair bit of profit). So is a bit thicker plastic phone from some one with no reputation worth it, if it's an upgradeable, untracked, high speced, full of options and ports, completely open pocket computer and phone, that people could have a part in designing? i think, for a lot of people (and in no means a majority) yes.
