I saw that show as well (Discovery?)...and the video of the upwelling by that oil rig was incredible....you don't often see fire in and below water. :)

However, as I recall it wasn't frozen methane, it was large amounts of methane trapped in rock....so much that the rocks could actually be ignited and burn. I don't know if that really changes anything...but it wasn't actually frozen methane.

(agreed, this is way OT). I think you might be on to something, but only because you are from norway and already prepared. I made the unfortunate assumption I was talking to all americans (happens a lot, I'm sorry).

Also, you can DEFINITELY get hypothermia in the summer. It is just as much, if not more of a danger during the summer than the winter. You don't expect it during the summer, so you don't plan for it. Sleeping in a wet sleeping bag can cause hypothermia...definitely. Now chances are, no one will sleep in a wet sleeping bag for long in the summer when outside is far warmer. Another thing...if you have the synthetic bag, not only will it dry faster, but it is MUCH smaller and lighter than cotton or down ones. *shrug* You're also right about being able to rent/borrow lots of equipment...however, that doesn't work so well for a family when you have several people to buy and rent for. My argument is that a camping/hiking/trek vacation is just as expensive as a hotel/see the sights vacation. *shrug*

Umm...if you're gone for a VACATION (which this is about), then I'm assuming at least 3-5 days...in whichcase a walmart backpack won't cut it...especially if you are camping (which is not grabbing a spot and spending all your time on it...it is hiking/canoeing from place to place). If you are going to hike with your gear, you need to carry EVERYTHING with you...including sleeping bag...which is difficult on a school backpack (oh..and pad and food etc). Bottled water? No thanks....too heavy. Canned food? heavy. Pans? if your wife/mother lets you borrow them, go ahead...they'll be unusable for the kitchen in the future. Sleeping bag? you need synthetic...if it gets wet, you want it DRY or you get hypothermia. Not only that, you want it stuffable and light and warm, not some crappy cotton crap. You've obviously never been on a camping trip. Choosing a spot at a state park and staying there for a couple days isn't camping...that's hotels for the cheap. And...you need more food than you think. Hiking/canoeing all day will make you REALLY hungry and you want food designed to fill you and not take much room. Pastas, rice etc are great, but you need more than starch. Sorry, your trip would end the day after you started with everyone complaining and crying and hating camping trips and vacations would be dreaded from then on. (Or you would end up spending it in a hotel w/o reservations, costing you even more $$).

Actually, if you're going to go the rustic hiking/camping route, you're going to spend money as well, just in different places. Somethings you'll want to bring along:

    Tent - For one/two people, maybe 100$...for a family? At least 2-300

Backpacks- Again...one backpack...maybe 100 bucks (for a decent camping internal/external frame pack). To outfit the family? Several hundred.

Hiking boots, not a necessity, but awfully nice....buy some for the family? Expensive and new shoe sizes every year.

Water filters - expensive...looking around 100 bucks if you want a decent pump style filter.

Sleeping bags...for a decent hiking mummy bag, looking around 100 bucks.

Sleeping pad...cheap, but costs more when outfitting the family.

    Camping stoves/fuel...

Food....if you're packing for camping...look into freeze dried or dehydrated...purchasing it costs a lot..dehydrating your own costs money to buy a dehydrator...enough food for a week is an awful lot of money

Camping permits/reservations etc...you can't just go out in the woods anymore...at least, not if you want a decent area to be in

Rope, knifes, tarps, bottles, pans etc

A family that will put up with being taken out in the wilderness for a week w/o TV, Radio, email, etc...priceless.

Even if you can salvage some of these items from year to year, camping is NOT a cheap activity (you will ruin most of your stuff on the first trip). Also, simply hiking and camping isn't all that much fun either, canoe trips are great (buying canoes for the family or renting is not cheap). Also...you're probably not lucky enough to live right in the adirondacks or the place that you want to camp (why would you want to hike and camp in familiar territory anyhow?), so driving/flying to the location is going to cost money as well. So will the marriage counseling afterwards.

Don't get me wrong, I love camping (I'm a "medic" on the treks at susque) and I hope to do it with my family, but it isn't as cheap or easy as it sounds.

However, if you grab a pile and squeeze, it is solid....if you keep it moving, you can make big balls of it...however, if you let the ball sit in your hand, it just melts right through. I liked the beginning of the movie (there was a beautifal continuous shot down a flight of steps and through some hallways), and even up to the first time travel. However, after Alexander reached the far future...the whole movie went down hill. First of all, the civilization looked EXACTLY like the communities in Riven, and the underground world looked exactly like Isengard in "The Fellowship of the Rings". The time travel was cool, but as Katz mentioned, there wasn't much. I expected a LOT more as far as character development and more of an actual story. 19. My woes with United Artists on Review:Fellowship of the Ring · · Score: 0, Interesting

I bought tickets online for a United Artists theatre...I will never do it again, here is why (an email I sent to a friend about the problem):

About two weeks ago I called the UA to see if they were going to be doing
any advance ticket sales for FoTR...they told me that they weren't, all
advance ticket sales would have to be done over the internet. So, I went
to a webpage, and using matt's credit card, bought 4 tickets. Then, early
last week, I went down to the mall to pick up the tickets. (trip 1) They
said that I could not have the tickets unless I had both the credit card
and the owner of the credit card present (which is ridiculous, because I
already bought the credit cards...they should require ID...but not this
other crap since they don't even mention it on the webpage). I argued
half-heartedly with them for a few minutes, because there wasn't any time
when both matt and I could be there. I finally conceded and went home.

On Sunday, Matt called the UA (he was also disgruntled at the stupid
policy) and explained the situation and asked again if it would be
possible to just let me borrow the credit card and use that to get the
tickets. The woman said that no, it wasn't a problem.
So, today, after school, I headed down to the mall and attempted to get my
tickets (trip 2). They said no...I explained that matt had called and
explained my whole situation. I argued for quite some time about it and
almost ended up shouting. I kept my cool, but I made them mad because I
held up the line and explained in detail how retarded their so-called
policies were and explained that I was going to be late for work and
whatnot. The people in line agreed with me, making them more angry to the
point where they yelled at me and took me aside (no threats for security
yet). I finally left and they told me to come back after 8 when the
manager is there. I explained the time/money problem with driving that
far, but they obviously didn't care. I left, and came to work and explained it to matt. So, we are going in AGAIN momentarily. This is a
freaking pain. I am not leaving the UA till they give me my tickets for
    FREE.

Worst part about this....they DO sell advance tickets! Bill bought his by
just stopping by. I have been lied to too many times! I am pretty pissed
    about the whole thing.

After all of this, I went again, and was able to get my tickets and they gave me 4 free passes for anytime this month....but, it doesn't nearly make up for the waste of time/money and gas to make all the trips to the mall. I also don't really care about movie tickets...this is the only movie I really want to see...and if I watch it again, it will be in a DIFFERENT THEATER!!!

I still can't wait till I see it tonight though.

The book is not a comedy, but I think any live action versions of the hobbit would end up looking like a comedy. The book itself is on a whole different wavelength than the rest...it isn't nearly as dark or serious as FoTR, TT, RoTK etc. It _could_ be done, but I don't think it could be done in a series with the others. Also, pulling apart the ligh-up base leaves you with two nice high-intensity red LEDs to play with. They aren't all that bad. I really like them.

Also, the light up part can be taken off, leaving you with a really nice looking frosted and thick glass. The glasses also hold a fair amount of whatever kind of liquid you want (ale for hobbits). I, for one, am not to bothered by the crass commercialism of the movie. They aren't raping the movie or anything, they are just saturating the market with movie related things. It is part of the hype. The movie cost 368 mills to produce (well, the trilogy cost that much) and New Line WILL get that money back. I'm not gonna go out and buy the bed sheets, but I will buy the millenium 7 volume hardcover edition of the trilogy and probably some action figures. If anyone whines about all the toys and stuff, they need to step off their self-rightous stool and get with it. If you don't want the crap, you don't get the movie.
