This is the way I got the LOTR movies and all sorts of.swf files. The way I do it is to view the source of the page, find the file name, add the file name to the last directory in the URL, copy the url, open notepad, create and html file and link to the link you copied, open the html file in netscape or IE or whatever, right click on the link and click save target as, and then you can download whatever file they were trying to prevent you from downloading. I dunno if this is easier than searching your cache, but it is definitely easy for flash animations and whatnot.
Uhh...I dunno. I agree, it is sorta expensive...but then again, regular disposable cameras are quite expensive....9 bucks for a nice kodak flash one. However, people still buy them! Why? If they have a nice camera, maybe they don't want to take it camping where it might get broken; or maybe somone that doesn't plan on taking a lot of pictures in their future decided it was better to spend 15 bucks on a couple of cameras for a trip to get the pictures they want rather than spending like 70 or 80 bucks for a nice point and shoot. I see disposable digital cameras being in the same boat. The price isn't all that much different, and a lot of people wouldn't mind saving time/energy to get the pictures they want for on the web, no matter how low res they are (look at the casio watch camera which any geek would love to have).

Ok, something like this begs several questions: First of all, how would they determined that the mp3s and whatnot on my computer aren't legal? I happen to own cds for almost every single mp3 on my computer.

herm...ok. I think I misread the article. It is true, the program is not automatically executed, but it is automatically installed. WHat happens is if I call up telnet through netscape without already downloading it, it doesn't work. However, if i go to nsca's site and download it, it downloads (which shouldn't work with the security the school has....they don't allow downloads of files over 1 meg on the macs), and it installs (which also shouldn't work because the security doesn't allow the installation of any programs, nor does it allow saving of downloads) After I download it, I can call it up through netscape. It isn't exactly the same thing...but it still bothers me that I can download something and it autoinstalls w/o any user intervention (at least with shockwave I have to click OK) also...there is no way i was offtopic...it might be slightly skewed info...but not offtopic. lay off the crack.
Interesting note: When I use the macs at my high school (G4's), IE never seems to work for them, so I always use Netscape. However, I also like to check my email using the macs, and there is no telnet application on these macs, and I can't install NCSA telnet on them because everything on the computer is locked. However, I found a way around it. When I download the hqx version of NCSA, it autoinstalls, bypassing "foolproof" security. I still can't use the telnet app unless I call it up through netscape using telnet: . I just thought this was interesting...because it isn't just IE that does it...it is the stupid hqx and stuffit expander things. I would definitely disable those options. (If I could...but the security features don't let me change anything!)
This is really cool, and I hope it helps the rescue effort a lot. One of my friends told me that they were implementing some form of sonar to test for structural stability and whatnot...does anyone know anything about that? I couldn't find it on any news page, so I think my friend might have been mistaken. I think this would probably work better than sonar, and I really hope it is helpful.

I would say that even if this was true (which it is not)...saying this sort of crap in the wake of a tragedy of this magnitude causes more grief and solves NOTHING. that was a pure flame intended only to cause anger and I am dissappointed in anyone who would do this. the whole thing reminds me of a bbc article from about 2 days ago about that mars "fossil" that was found a couple years back. A team of scientists determined that there was no fossils in the rock, it was just magnetite crystals. Sort of interesting, the whole article is located here at bbc.co.uk

Appearently, according to the TV I am watching, 2 planes crashed...not just one. Definitely terrorist.
one way to get movies and embedded files out:
.swf files. The way I do it is to view the source of the page, find the file name, add the file name to the last directory in the URL, copy the url, open notepad, create and html file and link to the link you copied, open the html file in netscape or IE or whatever, right click on the link and click save target as, and then you can download whatever file they were trying to prevent you from downloading. I dunno if this is easier than searching your cache, but it is definitely easy for flash animations and whatnot.

Uhh...I dunno. I agree, it is sorta expensive...but then again, regular disposable cameras are quite expensive....9 bucks for a nice kodak flash one. However, people still buy them! Why? If they have a nice camera, maybe they don't want to take it camping where it might get broken; or maybe somone that doesn't plan on taking a lot of pictures in their future decided it was better to spend 15 bucks on a couple of cameras for a trip to get the pictures they want rather than spending like 70 or 80 bucks for a nice point and shoot. I see disposable digital cameras being in the same boat. The price isn't all that much different, and a lot of people wouldn't mind saving time/energy to get the pictures they want for on the web, no matter how low res they are (look at the casio watch camera which any geek would love to have).
the other ones are from artists that only release the music on the net...my cover is just fine. (as long as they don't find my britney spears and N'sync collection)

Unfortunately, this is what Joseph Heller would call a Catch 22. One of those damned if you do, damned if you don't scenarios. If people stop buying stuff from RIAA members...then the problems would be even more dire. Then they would have "proof" that piracy is increasing because their sales are going down and people are obviously pirating the music they want. See? Either way is inefective. Sorry. I wish that would work...it would be a somewhat easy solution...get your way through economic pressure.
Ok, something like this begs several questions: First of all, how would they determined that the mp3s and whatnot on my computer aren't legal? I happen to own cds for almost every single mp3 on my computer.
Second of all, how would they go about hacking into our computers? If these guys are stupid enough to come up with such an idiotic proposal, how can we expect them to be able to hack a 386 running windows 3.1 on a network running win NT with no patches applied?

herm...ok. I think I misread the article. It is true, the program is not automatically executed, but it is automatically installed. WHat happens is if I call up telnet through netscape without already downloading it, it doesn't work. However, if i go to nsca's site and download it, it downloads (which shouldn't work with the security the school has....they don't allow downloads of files over 1 meg on the macs), and it installs (which also shouldn't work because the security doesn't allow the installation of any programs, nor does it allow saving of downloads) After I download it, I can call it up through netscape. It isn't exactly the same thing...but it still bothers me that I can download something and it autoinstalls w/o any user intervention (at least with shockwave I have to click OK) also...there is no way i was offtopic...it might be slightly skewed info...but not offtopic. lay off the crack.

Interesting note: When I use the macs at my high school (G4's), IE never seems to work for them, so I always use Netscape. However, I also like to check my email using the macs, and there is no telnet application on these macs, and I can't install NCSA telnet on them because everything on the computer is locked. However, I found a way around it. When I download the hqx version of NCSA, it autoinstalls, bypassing "foolproof" security. I still can't use the telnet app unless I call it up through netscape using telnet: . I just thought this was interesting...because it isn't just IE that does it...it is the stupid hqx and stuffit expander things. I would definitely disable those options. (If I could...but the security features don't let me change anything!)
This is really cool, and I hope it helps the rescue effort a lot. One of my friends told me that they were implementing some form of sonar to test for structural stability and whatnot...does anyone know anything about that? I couldn't find it on any news page, so I think my friend might have been mistaken. I think this would probably work better than sonar, and I really hope it is helpful.
as a disclaimer, it was an email i got. It wasn't the first time i recieved it, but i certainly found it relevant...whether timely or not. And for the most part, true. (though appearently history has changed slightly with the plane thing as one of the responses mentioned) *shrug* whether it is old or not, tis mostly true and relevant.
i got this in an email..but i almost completely disagree with both of your points. I would say that even if this was true (which it is not)...saying this sort of crap in the wake of a tragedy of this magnitude causes more grief and solves NOTHING. that was a pure flame intended only to cause anger and I am dissappointed in anyone who would do this. Thank goodness the majority of americans aren't like you or else we wouldn't have the heroes that are going into the dangerous situations to rescue people.

With me, it is whichever one is cheapest. I don't care how long i have to wait. Actually...i don't even care about a rewritable dvd drive...i still need the plain old drive that actually plays dvds. so..anyone who is upgrading, rather than throwing that drive out, give it to me. :)
