  1. DALnet's past April Fool's jokes on Alas Poor DALnet, We Hardly Knew Ye · · Score: 1

This, like many past DALnet April Fool's jokes, has been really funny afterwards because it was so possible (and we'd all been secretly hoping it for a while.) I especially liked the one about 4 years ago about dalvenjah getting run over by a truck. The cheers of joy from operators were quickly quashed, however, when we all found out he wasn't really dead. It was even funnier to watch people posting apologetic messages for cheering about it. :)

I know this is cheeze-ass advice, but it's SO true: Just be yourself. Generally, yourself is a very likable person, while the image you try to portray is not. I know it worked for me, when I started letting people know the real me I was so embarassed about, I found out that they weren't so different themselves.

An old mechanical drafting teacher of mine told me this little bit of wisdom: "It doesn't matter if you know the answer as long as you know where to find it." I believe this holds true in this situation as well. As long as the code was properly cited, there should be no problem. After all, isn't that basically what libraries do?

  4. This is not a bad thing on Dreamcast Mark II Prototype On Show · · Score: 2

People are taking this STB to be a Bad Thing (tm) I, for one, would welcome a service like this. I love my DirecTV system because I can rent movies without having to go to the video store. This service, I expect, will be much akin to renting video games. I do this a lot as well, and it eliminates my having to drive down to Blockbuster or Holywood Video to rent a game. I expect that this service will have a much larger game library, without having to worry about due dates, late fees and selection. I like to try before I buy, so if I like a game I rent off this service, I will then go out and buy it.

I doubt piracy will be as big a deal as is suspected. Dreamcast games aren't terribly difficult to rip as it is, it just takes a good bit of technical knowledge and time to dump a game over the serial port, not to mention burn the game. I expect it will take the same amount of technical knowledge to rip games off this set top.

This box seems more aimed towards casual gamers who might just want a quick game of Chu Chu Rocket or Sega Smash Pack rather than Skies of Arcadia or Phantasy Star Online. Just my $.02

You obviously don't live in the South. :) Teaching positions south of the Mason-Dixon line are desparate; I know for a fact Houston ISD hires teachers who don't even speak English, because they're so hard up. As for the substitutes, (I'm seriously not making this up,) I've had: a hobo (though he preferred to be called a traveler), a Rwandan refugee, a man who reeked of marijuana and a woman who was later convicted of killing her mother. This is the state of education pretty much anywhere in the South.

I don't know if this is a "best" teacher or a "least bad," but seeing as every other comp sci teacher I've ever had has been an arrogant asshole, my favorite was the Russian who didn't speak a word of English. Nor did he know C++, the language on which the class was designed. Aah, gotta love public high schools. :)

This economic view is called "Reaganomics." We all know where it lead the country: Right into recession. It tends to lead to high inflation because it makes the rich richer, so they have more money to blow on frivolous things. Disproportionate levels of discretionary income is one of the easiest ways to jack up inflation.

And remember, North America/Western europe/Australia is better than most countries. We could live in a third world country where .1% of the population controls 99% of the money. Those of us in developed countries have it good.

Actually, I recall reading in an interview with producer Hironobu Sakaguchi that Square had their own rendering software written specifically for the movie. There is a LOT of money in this flick (I'm assuming from Sony/Columbia/Tristar, who is publishing,) from the $11 million custom built studio to the render farm in a Honolulu office building facing the ocean. This movie Toy Story look like Pong.

BeOS does not run on the PowerMac G3s and above (read: anything with color on the case) and Be has discontinued development for the PowerPC because Apple is keeping the hardware specs closed, which makes it mighty hard for developers. I have been using Linux\PPC / MkLinux for about 3 years now and have seen it grow from "Let's see if we can make this work" to "Let's see how well we can make this work" to "Damn, let's kick some ass." Keep up the good work. :)

Ease of use just makes the hard jobs easier to do. This is not a bad thing because it brings home users. With home users come commercial applications (like games) for the rest of us to use. And it also saves some poor souls from having to use Windows. :)

  13. Two words: Right on on "What is Linux Missing?" · · Score: 1

This article, while not the best written one I've ever read, hits the nail right on the head. The whole "glossy box factor" is missing from Linux. Everything I'd want to say has already been said, either in the original article or by followup posts, but it would be nice to make sure some of the developer lists out there get to see this thread, and perhaps draw some ideas from it. There is no central body we can complain to; Linux has no central governing body, just its entire user body. One of the best things to do would be instead of having 30 different versions of the same thing, get all 30 authors together to make one, ass-kicking version. Sounds like a plan to me.

    /sbin/modprobe ip_masq_irc ports=6667,7000
