Ive been doing web dev for nearly 6 years now, and very heavy client side web dev (browser code). The deciding factor in building a web site that conforms to more open standars vs. browser specific rules is usually who is winning the browser war.
Granted, MSIE and MACIE are very different, but the difference between MACIE and MACNS is huge, massive I must say. If the percentages grow higher and higher for NS (I hope they do) then you will see more websites abondoning browser specific code in favor of cross browser code. Google Zeitgeist
Or you will see more sites implementing CSS the way it was suppose to be used. Just take a look at the newly redesigned Yahoo Mail in IE and then in NS, well done Yahoo. (except what is with this more than often asking me of my pwd lately?)
This is an award in the amount of X dollars to anyone who can post a story like this one and not have another post on/. the next day saying MS shut it down.
I must of spent about 5 hours and 10 different phone calls trying to weasal my way into getting DSL with Verizon. My neighbors get it, North/South/East/West of my place, but apparently "Im To Far Away From The CO"
So what that means, is I have to be ingenous as to getting a repair tech out to sort out my line becuase of my incompatibility for DSL. By law, they cant provide that service, becuase it locks out comptitors. Even though they are my local carrier and phone company and they own the systems.
So, my last attempt, is to have them bring in a second phone line. Maybe I will get lucky and be put on the same local loop as my neighbors instead of the one Im on that probably wraps me around the city to or three times. I'll know monday if this works. I HATE DIALUP:(
I took on a job with a small company 4 weeks ago as Lead Tech, Jack of all Trades. The day after I was hired I heard about employees checks bouncing and other bad things. So, sure enough, my check bounced, I never got my medical insurance, and I'll be taking the CEO to court to get my one month salaray he owe's me. 65K/year.
Oh, and BTW, my wife and I had our first baby 3 months ago and our first home mortgage got approved the day I left the company. Others left as well of course.
Too Funny, give me about $100 per "Old PC" terminal with net access and a fresh download of Mandrake, multiply that by the # of stores add in some custom interface (front end GUI) and I bet I will come in at less than $1 Mil for their pricey $10 mil project.
I love comming to/. I love the postings, the articles, everything except one thing. I am so sick and tired of the negative Jon Katz postings. Come on, you guys have nothing better to do then bash him everytime he writes a review or post something on/. For once why don't you read some of the external links, read and reasearch some of the content that is posted.
Ya, I understand Columbine came and gone and that is where his name became famous to the techies, but leave it be, move on.
The question clearly states "How has the rise and fall of Internet and tech stocks affected your lives and careers? If so, was it for better or for worse?" So for those of you who keep writing other BS, sorry, you should answer the question.
I started work for an Internet Client Services firm over a year ago, I was given 15,000 shares with a strike of $10, we went from $7 all the way up to $94, that put me at $1.41 million. Not to bad for a 25 year old. We are now at $4/share and I have 5,000 vested. I recieved a promotion as well. This has had a positive effect on my life of course, however, my wife and I were making big plans depending on the stock price which in the end (today) isnt worth a damm.
I will wait it out untill my next third is vested in August 01, then move on. It's the difference of buying a house outright, or a small down payment. I wish good luck to everyone, find a company that is going to be around for sometime, and then maybe your stock will be worth something.
What makes SETI successful (in terms of data analyzed, and not finding green men) is that the whole system of taking part is competition. Some users, most users, join a group within Seti to compete angainst other groups. Companies vs. Companies and individuals vs. individuals. Give me a client application that uses idle CPU time and in the meantime I compete with my company vs. Pixar Studios, then I will stick with it and run that as my screensaver.
It's that sense of competition, wanting to be first, but knowing you will never catch SUN. It's why you keep playing UT, to see your stats get better and better, even knowing that the guy on top of the ladder is some 14 year old that plays 12 hours a day with 60 frags/hour.
WHY? You ask. Well I work for Rare Medium Inc. One the the big dogs in competition with Razorfish and gang. We do not code any site that is not compatiable with NS+IE, PC+MAC. At least our corporate QA won't let it pass anyways. The major sites that you will visit on a day to day basis will be compatitble with the major browsers.
And as far as developing IE 5.x only features, FORGIT IT MS, EAT ME. I'm not wasting my time or my companies time doing Propriatary code that relies on an enormous amount of interdependencies.
So techies, mamas and papas, your corporate sites will render properly in any browser as long as you pay the money to get a big firm to make sure that happens. Go boutique and you get a boutique site.
AI is the key. Not making a website better with the use of AI. What the web needs is "GUIDE". The end user learns the "Guide" one "Guide" not many websites. This "Guide" knows you. This "Guide" acts similar to the COMPUTER on Star Trek. Give me a minute on this one before slamming it.
FOR EXAMPLE I need to know how many switch hit home runs did Mickey Mantle hit against the Dodgers, and compare that to the total home runs hit by Mark McGwire against the dodgers. The user speaks this request (once again only needing to learn the "Guide" and the guides user interface (beign vocal).
The Guide also knows me. Knows what type of movies I like and why I prefer theatre 1 vs. theatre 2. I then come home and ask my "Guide" "What movie should I see tonight?" and not going to a website and checking to see what movies are available to see. The Guide would do this for me.
Where does this scifi suggestion fit into the web.......www.ask.com on speed. They have the idea using todays technology...give it a few years (ok maybe 10) and we will have our very own "Guide" that knows us and will ultimatly, SURF THE WEB FOR US
Im sorry to jump in on this late in the game but this guys way of valuation is so wrong.... ""US$25 per 1000 impressions is a good mark"" That means a website with 1000 impressions/month is worth 3million. My 5 year old luckily listed YAHOO homepage gets more impressions then that. I love this site..I have been a reader for about 3 months. This is the first thread I have read, and what a bunch %@*& &$%*. To the rightfull owner of this site>>>> You have done great, (yes we all know you need a new server), your content is good. MAKE SURE YOU GET A GOOD DEAL........BOTTOMLINE....You will know it when the right offer is made. Good Luck.

Dont use Hotmail! DOH
A more accurate footer would hold your Long & Lat not the city/state/country.
How's this for an approach.

Suckers
Oh ya, you pinned that one down. Archive.org by a freakin longshot. Too Cool.
Ya because beating the crap out of someone with the crowbar is so much less violent then just shooting them. Smarty Phants.
