Company A spends ooodles of money designing a product that works better than everything else, company B takes one look at it and figures and says hey if we copy it, we save the development costs. Thus hurting company A. It's very common, A common road down this path is OEM the part, then design your own copy and dump the OEM. Happens all the time... Like computers, the main thing I noticed was that much of the specialized audio equipment kept getting cheaper and better. In my last few years I noticed many of the bands we worked with often had equipment on par if not better than ours, This is a good trend... This was also the period (1992-1997) when we switched all of our production from the 4 track to the computer... It was very easy to do and we ended up with doing more higher quality internal production. (And yes I know many 4 track wizarsds that would argue you can never get better than true analog production)

Ask yourself how many bands started out in the garage...

How many bands recorded there first release at a local college station?

How many bands could really do a first release on a personal computer with a couple hundred dolars worth of sound gear?

How many bands could sell CD's burned with a CD-R on personal computer at shows?

I have lost count of the number of people I know/have known that have personal studios setup in basements, garages and barns.

They quote, I say it's not gonna work, our programming coop agrees. We get 4 different quotes from 4 different vendors, all cost less and I like the technologies (netscreen, sonic wall, 24/7 monitoring services, Cisco's ect...).

They go way over budget, a firewall that was supposed to cost $10,000 has now cost us $30,000. And to top it off the proxy server blue screens every 24 to 36 hours...

Solution I blow up at the one of the VP's so bad on friday that he closes his door and we get into a shouting match. Plus they are releasing a free GPL'd version that cost's nothing compared to the $99 for standard.

Personally I think this is very competive for the tools. I currently use Delphi 5 Pro and will be upgrading to the Kylix Pro version when it comes out.

My complaint, give me an upgrade price from Delphi 5 to Kylix Pro that is in line with the Delphi 5 upgrade price!

To be fair Borland did invest a fair amount of money in the product, and put themselves out on a limb announcing it as coming soon at the Borcon 2000. About time they final got it out the door, guess they where true to there word that they would not release it before it is ready. I have warm fuzzies about this one.

We could strike Russia from bases in Turkey, Europe, Japan, and Alaska. We had a large Carrier fleet that they lacked. They would have to launch any attack against the US from Siberia or an ill equiped navy.

Cuba was an attempt to gain parity with the US, remember this whole period can be summed up as Russian's Bluff. They where bluffing to offset weaknesses and hole's in the russian economy and defenses. If the Dem's and Kennedy hadn't been so set on MAD (instead of parity) Cuba would not have happened.

Communications Solid Lasers work between 1.4 um (1400nm) and 650 nm...

Part of the problem with Deep Blue and UV sources is that the photon's carry enough energy to start breaking atomic bonds, leading to the optical elements degrading over time as they are etched by the light source.
