How difficult would it be to stop a packets on the border? How many paths out of the country are there?
That study seems to show, that the exponenital nature as well as bulk of the code comes mainly from drivers. Some subsystms, e.g. FS seems to have actually decreasing LOC.
Shortly, supported hardware grows exponentially.
Notice, that if the hardware driver development grew linearly, the cumulative amount of drivers would be quadratic. Since the rate of adding hardware drivers is probably a little bit faster than linear, the curve seems to be quadratic to exponetial.
This is far from being signs of bloat disease. This is actually quite healthy grow.

The best solution I could come up with is not be one dedicated conference SW, but rather set of capabilities that enable to place any X client application into a conference , e.g. gimp, dia, wordprocessor or local webcam and its display.
1. The first step would be to generate equivalent of HP SharedX.
This would allow to redirect an X-window not only to one X server, but to broadcast it to multiple X-terminals. This would be already workable solution, provided that there is a interface longing out all but one terminal at the time for keyboard/mouse input.
2. The second step would be to multithread the conference enabled application, so that every mouse and keyboard could have its current position and could concurrently draw, paint, write text and do some limited commands.
3. The third part would be to add voice input/output to the X protocol exchange. This is already a problem: You can play a game on a remote computer, but how do you get your sound back home?
Are some people working on this problem?
4. Mixing sounds. Currently under linux it is mostly exclusive, although some sound mixing software exists. Conference audio needs to make two or three preferred speakers audible and suppress the noise from other places.
5. Adding some moderator control pannel, so that he can suppress some participants that shout while other are speaking or otherwise disturb the conference.

Interference: Is I believe the problem that is actually solved with carbon nanotubes. It appears that natively they conduct well along the tube and isolate in perpendicular direction.
With current planar layout of siicon chips, the wiring becomes a real problem. With spatial chips, wiring problems will be still there but will enter into different dimension.
For instance 2-d 256MBit 0.15um RAM uses about some 8x9mm space, out of which 75% is wires.
3D 256Mbit RAM would on the same technology would
take up 0.5x0.5x0.125mm. In other terms, 8x9x4mm 3D RAM would have 1TBit capacity. This needs 37-bit address to be byte-addressable.
Carbon structures can withstand way higher
temperatures than silicon.
Probably carbon nanotube will generate less heat for the same performance, because it moves lower charges via better conductors on a shorter distance. Hoowever since your processor is only part of your lapop and your processing requirements will increase, and your laptop will only get thinner, not smaller (for the screen size), it will dissipate perhaps only half of current energy.
The carbon nanotubes will get much hotter, just because they can. Probably the CPU core will easily be able to reach betwern 400 and 600 dec C.
That can be efectively distributed using carbon nanotube heatsink, so there will be no burrning hot spots on your laptop.
BTW, that is another applicatin of carbon nanotubes - very effective heatsinks. What conducts electricity efficiently often conduct also heat wery well. Heatsinks were will be probably the first carbon nanotube techology in your laptop.
