If this is average distance os "near miss", then chance of hit is 1:2*130*130), alias 1:33800. that is 0.003%.
Now, what IS realy dangerous, is the orbit duration. Since 18*365.24 =~ 5*1321, we will meet again nearly at the same spot in January 2020.
If we want no worse chance of hit than 1%, we have to better hurry and develop the technology to divert an asteroid within 6,084 years.

The biggest reason for which I use Linux as a desktop is X-windows. As a home user, MS-Windows is not powerful enough to me. I need network transparency, otherwise my kids coul dnot use the two old 486 computers fof anything useful.
The X-windows network transparency, multiple X-windows on single machine, multiple desktops is what puts Linux years ahead of Windows features.
If it needs something, its smooth installation of DRI and true type fonts.
We need this directories.
We cannot have part of directory on the network, part local read/write, part local read-only.
Stuff in/bin and/sbin MUST be local. That's where mount and login is. If the network breaks, that'w where you find commands to fix it.
If we had it all in/programs/bin, we would either need 200GByte HD on all machines or when network breaks, or it would have to be on network.
Bug you could not connect to network, since all the commands that start, run and diagnose the network are in/programs/bin on the network.
It should be perfectly possible to make using rpmdb a bogus filesystem, which follows the hierarchy defined by distributor, mount it on/packages.
It would either something like proc, completely in RAM, or data system actually written to the disk.
The tree would end in symbolic links to the actually installed files. Every package's own directory would have file DESCRIPTION, that contains standard RPM header, executable UNINSTALL for rpm --erase or VERIFY for rpm -v.
This way you would have the traditional {/usr;/usr/bin;/usr/share/doc} system to actually run Linux and/packages filesystem to browse and organize it.
If so it is almost right. Only that because following the symbolic link is much slower than following hard link (directly to the same i-node), it is much bettre to install the code actually in the/bin or/usr/bin or/usr/x11/bin and make to it symbolic link in it's own directory.
Many applications make it that way, if I recall most in/usr/local/bin, WordPerfect, Applix, FrameMaker and others.
There are few, though, which make it the way you described. For instance, the X-windows itself, the X11 command was a link in the 3.x.x systems to the appropriate driver and version 4.x only changed the system slightly.
Now if you move the program directory, no problem if you used asolute paht. But you should not delete the program directory wihout looking first where all the links point to. And then you need to find out, if another application needs that executable, before you can delete it.
There are reasons for all this madness. Let's list them just for the record:
Because you may want to have/sbin and/bin local and everything else network mounted. If network breaks, how will you fix it, if all / were on network?
Or, you might want to have/tmp and/var on fast RAID0, while/home on redundant RAID5 array.
Or, because you might want to have/boot,/sbin and/usr/sbin, especially login code on read-only volume for better security.
Or, on machine used as dmb terminal you might not want to have the big and bulky/usr/X11/*.
Or, because you might want to have 2 versions of/lib mounted alternativelly.
The reason for no tree under/usr/bin and/usr/X11/bin is speed. The $PATH search becomes shorter and the usually cashed directory directs you straight to the proper inode. That's why Linux and Unices are far faster than Windows.
Actually there are quite a package specific trees under/usr/share. In non-RPM system, these would be normally in/usr/local. Making a link from/usr/bin to the package directory for the binary is slow, but it can be done the ther way round. Why it is not done, I can't tell you, but it seems that the few good and big packages do it.
However, there are reasons for criticism:
Mandrake, for instance, adopted HFS in 8.0. All/usr/doc and/usr/man was moved into/usr/share. But not exactly all (not ViaVoice) and not the old packages from before upgrade. Tell me why they did not move the old stuff over first and why did not make the symbolic link/usr/man ->/usr/share/man, so that any of the thousands users who have old $MANPATH can at least see a manual for 'man' ?

The hypoteticaly "cheap" ternary system assumess, that the need for hardware scales linearly with the base. That is, e.g. it binary gate requires 2 transistors, ternary needs 3 transistors. In such a case 2^3=8 is less than 3^2=9.
So system with 2*3=6 transistors can count to 9 in ternary while in binary only to 8. When searching maximum for f(x) = x^(const/x), one ends up with e for all const>1. That's why the mention that the 3 is the closest to e - an number base ideal. I remember having that case in mathematics competition way back in 8th grade.
In engineering practice, that is quite far from truth. In ECL logic the ternary half-adder requires the same number of transistors as in binary logic. It requires the same number of wires to carry ternary digit as binary one. However we all know why is ECL nearly extinct - its high consumption prevents high integration.
The benefits of binary logic can be seen in CMOS, where we have two states, each of which consumes also no power and still has low output impedance.

One would think, that Ge transistors are the past. Remember, they only work till 90degC, while silicon can work till 150degC.
Could they ever produce military SiGe transistor?
If it consumes half the power, produces half the heat, that is not enough to make faster chips. If the ambient is 30degC, the heat flow between 150degC and 30degC (120degC difference) is twice as big as between 90degC and 30degC (60degC difference).
However, if they interleave Ga and Si layers so that the doped Ga regions cannot difuse and spread under high temperatures, they have a chance to make faster ICs at the same temperature range as with monolitic Si substrate.
I doubt they will make it any soon. GaSi will not make faster processors for long, long time.
