  1. Re:2nd American Revolution? on Gun Sales Halted By FBI Computer Glitch · · Score: 1

Wouldn't that be the Third? The US Civil War was the Second.

Actually, the Civil War was not an attempt to overthrow the current government, the Southern States were trying to split from the Union. I guess it could be categorized as a Revolution (albeit a failed one) but there is a certain distinction between Revolutions and Civil War. Anyways, my point is that there is probably going to be another in the forseeable future.

Um... I think you need to spend a little more time with the history books. "We Americans" (to be more specific, citizens of the United States) certainly fought -- and lost -- a very bloody civil war.

Technically, we still didn't lose... What I was referring to in this case though, was other countries trying to opress us. In this case it is our own government, which many are starting to see as non-American and not working in our best interest.

As for another one, it's certainly possible. When the USSR crumbled, I considered the possibility that the US would follow. At the time I felt it would be a result of global politics, but now, with our rights infringed on a more regular basis, I wonder if it will be internal politics instead that will light the fuse. The extensive restrictions on firearm ownership, "delightfully" in evidence with delays in gun sales, are only one of many violations of the US Constitution (as amended).

Agreed. But unfortunately, people aren't going to wise up and notice these infringements until the Gravy Train of our great economy begins to stop, and even start going in reverse (another 3-5 years I suspect, but who knows). It will take a deep financial blow to the citizens of the US to realize that the current government is not working in our best interest. Of course, when that time comes, we may be under a socialist democracy already.

I doubt it. What is a real Revolution to you? One that succeeds? If so (i.e., if that is why the US Civil War in the 1800s was not a Revolution to you), it will be over before you decide it's real.

I'll have to see it posted on /. first :)
Actually the thing that would probably trigger a lot of folks would be another Waco or Ruby Ridge, but if the group being persecuted has done nothing to make the common Joe say "gee, those right wing nuts, they deserve what they get". The US gov't will probably screw up somewhere and American citizens will be sympathetic with those being persecuted. God help them if those folks start firing back...

  4. 2nd American Revolution? on Gun Sales Halted By FBI Computer Glitch · · Score: 1

After reading many of the posts here, I get the distinct feeling that many people are anticipating (not exact looking forward to it though) a Second American Revolution. I can't quite blame them though, with the whole Y2K thing going bust, everyone is wondering what "the next big thing" is going to be.

This is a smart enough audience to realize that once our beloved stock market finally comes to a grinding halt (it's supposed to happen, just like natural weather patterns predict hurricanes in the Summer), the US in particular is going to be in for a very rude awakening. For 10 or so years now, our government has been making laws that won't really affect us (while we enjoy the good times). But when the good times end, my guess is that we are going to get to see the "True Colors" of our goverment.

My conservative guess is that I will see it within my life-time (50-70 years, depending on whether they tax cigarettes out of existence). My more aggressive guess is 5-10 years after the next recession digs in (and it will be a long one, there are going to be so many companies that were driving along in the red during the good times that even the ones in black will plummet because of a micro-domino effect).

So what does this have to do with all you folks in Europe and *ahem* other NATO allies? The only thing I ask of you is not to help our government regain its dictatorship. We Americans have never lost a war fought on our own soil (even against our own government), and we won't lose the next one.

In light of my opinions and statements above, I just want to say that I'm not a "looney" or a "fear-monger" or some kind of "doomsday-sayer". I'm simply pointing out the obvious agenda that our government has (and any government for that matter, until someone figures out how to do it right), that agenda is to become large and tell it citizens how to live their lives, regardless of popular opinion.

BTW, I'll be part of the Revolution, but only after I'm sure that it's real...

I know this story is going to get a lot of posts, so I want to get straight to the point: This is a HORRIBLE idea... and I'm saying this from the "well duh department" because we can only scratch the surface on what the implications of something this big are. Say I go to work for company X, and they dig up a 3 year old list of speeding tickets on me (hey, it's a misdemeanor in many US States). So now I'm getting rejected a because of some arbitrary crap that doesn't even matter to my work performace? Ok, another scenario for you to think about: I'm a typical programmer going out for a quick 3AM meal and I get arrested because I fit a profile (it's a stretch, but not really), I get processed and released but then 3 months down the line... BAM, my face is in the database. Now I know that in certain agencies (Experian/Equifax), you can get these things cleared up, but that can take months.

Any body wanna guess what happens when you have bad credit? Not *that* big of a problem.

Anybody wanna guess what happens when you get arrested for a crime (and processed)?
