  1. Fractured Flickers on Alternate Audio Tracks for Movies · · Score: 1

One of my favorite TV shows waaay waaay back was Fractured Flickers. It took old silent movies and added a humorous sound track. Same principle as Woody Allen's "What's Up Tiger Lily?" I'd like to see this DVD track stuff applied that way. Properly done, it's hilarious.

  2. Re:Use a passport on Pay Dirt in Scanned Driver's Licenses · · Score: 1

I carry it in my car. When I know I'm going to have to present ID, like to a notary or for a large credit card transaction, I bring it in with me. Most of the time it doesn't make any difference, it's just a way to throw a small monkey wrench into whatever The Man has in mind for us. However, it's sometimes fun when people who don't customarily deal with passports don't quite know what to make of it.

  3. Use a passport on Pay Dirt in Scanned Driver's Licenses · · Score: 1

I use my passport when I don't want people to have all the info that's on my driver's license. Passports don't have the SSN or home address, but do have birthday, making them usable for proving age.

  4. Never again on IBM 120GXP Revisited · · Score: 1

I have a 75GXP that went South after less than a month of use, and another that died after a couple of months. After that experience and having seen several stories about the unreliability of certain IBM drives, it's going to be a long time before I buy another one. I suspect that there are a lot of people like me, and that IBM's drive business will be taking some bad hits for the foreseeable future.

Does it really matter if the disks are unreadable? If the data wasn't important enough that somebody didn't say, "hey, we need to transfer this stuff to new media," then maybe it's not such a big deal. At a minimum, I presume that it means that the data wasn't being used by anyone, or they'd have noticed that it was about to become unavailable.

Similar to Tivo, but you can add on more storage via a FireWire interface, and it can wirelessly transmit programming to remote locations. That's a brief, simplistic description that really doesn't do the product justice. I suggest reading up on it at their site.

  10. Re:Aaaarghhh... on The Rise of CSI · · Score: 1

I once went on a rant such as that myself, though not on SlashDot. I said "you people's post's are making me s'ick". Perhaps unsurprisingly, some folks came back with the "English is continuously evolving and new rules ... blah blah blah." I asked them to state the 'rule' that says to just put apostrophes wherever the hell you want. I got no answer. Ah well, it felt good to vent.

  11. Great show on The Rise of CSI · · Score: 2, Interesting

I just discovered CSI a few months ago, thanks to my Tivo 'recommending' it. It's a great show. The only thing I don't like about the characters is their tendency to use their authority to push people around. I've encountered enough authoritarian jerks that it rubs me the wrong way.

How is it going to help increase the rollout of broadband if the restrictions on it make it undesireable to build? No one is going to invest money in infrastructure that they're forced to share with the competition at a price determined by someone else. If government wants to handle broadband in this manner, it should just make it a publicly-owned utility instead of pretending that it's a private business.

People go nuts when you suggest building a new nuclear reactor. What do you think would happen if you tell them you're going to multiply the potential destructive consequences of that by many fold, and suspend it over their heads? And the potential for an accident pales in insignificance if you consider how attractive a target it would make for someone to take down on purpose. I'm as big a techno-freak as anyone (hey, bring on those nukes, we need the power), but this would worry even me.

It's too bad that they're going to stop development of Asian language versions, but if punishment is their goal, somehow I think that it will have little effect, and may even backfire.

I interpret this as a threat to get the governments in the area to cut down on piracy. If they don't then Adobe would make good on the threat (or not, as it chooses).

It may be more an indication of the mindset of an academic. I recall that I once worked for a company which sold some computers to a university. For the next go-round, the procurement person found a cheaper source, and our vice president went to talk to her. He pointed out that we supported our systems, whereas the cheaper company did not. She said that her university had a support contract with our company for that type of computer. Asked if she expected us to support systems she bought from our competitor for no additional money, she said yes! Needless to say, we did no further business with them.
