OpenJDK is alive and well and it's GPLv2. IBM has a JVM as well. Java7 might be buggy, but Vista was too when it came out. People will stick with Java6 for the next two years I guess.
I can't possible anything that can destroy OpenJDK as it's compatible with the Java spec, thus being freely granted all the needed patents. Microsoft paid a license to create an incompatible "Java" (C#,.Net), and it also paid licensing. Google created an incompatible Java as well, so I guess they have to pay as well. However all this doesn't concern regular Java developers.
Real Free Software propenents always sticked to C/C++ however.
I have pretty positive experience with OpenJDK. I guess you won't get to run into any trouble unless you use video streaming features. (codec licensing problems) For J2EE fat client or webapps you're pretty safe.
IBM hasn't been sued yet, and they have their own JVM too. Or there's OpenJDK too. The current litiagtion now with Google is about creating an incompatible Java. (For compatible forks patents are granted. )
It's not the Java developers who are fucked, but the Dalvik developers.
"If the piracy is directly linked to review scores, it means that people just want the games for free and aren't that much interested in trying them out before actually buying them. "
Maybe they're legitimate customers who can't get past the DRM. /sarcasm
My experience is that code completition is very poor in all C++ IDEs, due to its complicated grammar. Although I only used the Express Version of VS C++, I guess code completition isn't dumbed down.
Because they're the most popular languages? In a bigger population of programmers you will find bigger idiots. Also, the problem is people who only know one programming language on a usable level. They miss out on a lot of intresting concepts, and it also makes them fanatic fanboys.
"Sure, it's not quite as "runs on anything" as Java, but have you ever compared any of the Java IDEs with VS? Lets face it, if MS hosed up every other thing its ever done, Visual Studio is bar none the best coding IDE."
That's a matter of taste. I always preferred Eclipse to VS even for C++ coding. (Let's just say I hate horizontal scrolling.)
We have big box stores too (Media Markt, Saturn), but they have rather shitty customer service, who usually don't know shit about computers, just got a 1 day training, and people just don't trust them. Most of their revenue comes from digital cameras, camcorders, monitors, printers and TVs.
So what's the alternative for After Effects or Flash? I've just played around with Synfig. It's finally getting usable, but it's not in the same ballpark. (Also, it focuses on slightly different things). And 2 years ago it was really bug ridden, just like Kdenlive.
I don't know how is it US, but computers in Central-Europe doesn't get bought in big box retail stores, but in specialised shops, where you can cherry pick your components for no additional fee. Still Linux isn't really widespread, as it has fewer mature applications, and schools/univerities also expect you to use Matlab/Autodesk/Adobe stuff, which are more hassle to install on Linux, if they run at all.
I expect that soon their Flash authoring tool would be able to generate HTML5 output as well. Also the difference between Javascript and Actionscript is the DOM/libraries. (Both are ECMA script.)

So inflation is the tax on keeping money. Thus increasing investment.

Student loan is quite different from a mortgage, as failing to pay won't make you homeless.

Fedora is in constant alpha/beta phase. If you want something stable use Centos (or Ubuntu LTS or Debian).
And in Hungary England is called Anglia, which is also an archaic form.

They release books in other formats as well, like HTML.

They already did that with Superman.

Well, in the place I live people don't just throw away their machine, as wages in Hungary are four times lower than in US/Western-Europe.

I meant Hungary, Slovakia. And I guess it's similar in Romania and Poland too.
Just put a monad on that loop :)
No, I mean the authoring tool.

The 4th is the least likely to happen. I don't know any OSS CAD software that's on Autocad/Solidworks level.

Can you say ribbon?
Windows/MS Office UI always changed with new versions. And don't get me started about RealPlayer.
You can't patent a programming language. The patent is on Just in Time compilation.
