    On #4 above, you missed one little word. I know you paraphrased, but that one little word you missed makes a huge difference. 'Essential'. "He who would sacrifice his 'essential' freedoms..."

    Makes a pretty big difference if you ask me. It changes the entire statment from a foolish sounding ultimatum to the start of a dialogue that was (and is) essential to to the foundation of this country. "What is an essential freedom?" Where is that line in the sand where the american people will say, 'this far, and no farther' to the government. That's what Franklin was trying to say. Pulling out that quote (as happens so often in this forum) is not the trump card to win the argument. It is the beginning of the debate, not the end.

    Just my $0.02.

    "You should know that information always wants to be free when its in the 3rd person, such as 'Your Information'. It is only in the 1st person, 'My Information' that it wants to be unfree.

    "A poll this week found 65 percent of Americans want a new Supreme Court justice to uphold Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that legalized abortion, while 29 percent want the decision overturned."

    They do not cite where the poll is from, which is odd, but this sounds like another poll I saw a few months ago.

    to be fair, Ben did not own R2. And as far as remembering them, droids are everywhere in their world. So the fact that Ben (as an old man) forgot one never bothered me. Also, he may have remembered them but choose not to say anything to avoid having to tell Luke a story that would lead to more questions about Daddy.

    Where the hell did you pull that number? Good rule of thumb, when you make up statictic, at least throw a webpage up somewhere that backs it up. Perot received 8% of the overall popular vote, his best being 14% in Maine. Quite a victory for a 3rd party and it is a shame it didn't lead to a better showing by 3rds in '96.

    I think you're confusing poor for well-funded. Were they able to travel and attend school because they took out student loans or because Uncle Laden paid the bills?

    The point was that the majority of these foot soldiers come from poor conditions where they can be told "they are to blame for your lot in life".

    wow, maybe you should take 5 minutes before you start hacking your code together to talk about your database and the things you need it to do. I know developers like you that hear half the problem and race to their computer to start coding. I'd rather find a whiteboard, draw some pretty pictures, and figure out what the hell we're trying to do first. And you know what, except for the simplist projects (which wouldn't have 2 people anyway), I'd finish before you and work a hell of a lot less.

    --There is nothing open about MS Office. Where can I download the specs of the MS Office formats? Oh, that is right, they are proprietary "IP". But wait, MS Office 2003 uses "open" XML. Gee that is just great, too bad the encoded data in the XML is proprietary "IP" and the XML wrapper is more of a PR stunt then MS truly opening up the MS Office documents formats.

    That is crap. I've replied several different times about this but here it is once more. Office2003 xml format DOES NOT contain encoded binary data. Here is an example. Granted it is quite long since the only actual text is 'Hello world' but most of it is meta-data describing the document.

    When you create a new account in 2000, XP, and 2003, the account is only a member of Users by default. You have to go in and add them as an admin. And here is the description of the Users group.

    'Users are prevented from making accidental or intentional system-wide changes. Thus, Users can run certified applications, but not most legacy applications' Gee, sounds like a pretty good thing for new users to me. I'll admit, most people don't do it, but stop talking out of your ass...it just makes your breathe stink.

    Yeah Windows Users Have No Choices

    Stop confusing lack of choices with lack of desire to find another choice. IE is a very good browser and there is very little reason for the average user to seek out an alternative, but that doesn't mean they don't have choice.

    Did you catch it? Essential Freedoms. So know, instead of a scary statment about the dangers of an oppressive regime, it becomes a question of what is an essential freedom, a balancing act between the two. We give up the freedom to kill and steal when we enter a society don't we? But how much freedom are we willing to concede? Not an easy question is it? But I think the question is worth asking instead of covering it up for a cheap shot.

    I am so sick of comments like this. You can still tape songs off the radio, but do you want to know where the line between 'sharing with friends' and 'stealing' is? It's when your 'friend' (who you've never heard of) comes to your computer and downloads the song. It's where giving becomes taking. If you give them the song, as in you hand someone a great mixed cd or you email an mp3, that is sharing. If you post your 18Gigs on music on your server and let anyone download, that's stealing.
    And for the people who are going to respond that it's not stealing because they're just 0s and 1s, or becuase it's just copyright, we've all heard it. As for me, I'm glad to see these services starting. They're coming late to the party, we all know that, but it's what I've been asking for...a legal way to browse new music without paying $14 bucks at Best Buy.

    I posted this above but wanted to give everyone another chance to see and stop spreading fud. I just opened Word 2003 Beta and typed 'Hello World' and saved with the XML format. Check out the format...no encryption!! Everything is human readable, or at least geek readable. Open Office or hundreds of useless SourceForge projects will be able to read and write in this format if they want. Now please, can we stop all the comments about evil Microsoft corrupting xml with encrypted binary data tags.

    This is not a comment about your post, which I can only hope was your attempt at humor, but a comment about your sig. I am so sick of seeing people pulling this quote out whenever they think evil government is starting down another Orwellian (another overused cliche, I know) path.
    If you're going to use this quote as some kind of defense, please realize that without explaining what you mean by 'essential'. I have no issue with this ruling because the judges in question did their job. They looked at the complaint, and looked at the law, and decided that the law would be violated by granting this student the right to reverse-engineer this app. I'm sorry but this does not trample on the Consitition in the slightest. If you have some moral issue, that's fine, but please don't stand behind a quote which in and of itself, would inspire a worthy debate.
