More and more the question is just -- "why not" load it with DRM. The hacker types can either A) use other hardware or B) have a reduced-content experience.
Or turn to online sources for liberated versions. Even your average users are more inclined to download from illegal sources online, if they can't use their music in the way they see fit. Build a better mouse trap and they'll build a better mouse.
You don't need to limit yourself to one rail to provide automation. Some of the existing implementations include:
- Vancouver Skytrain
- Kuala Lumpur light rail
- Singapore metro system I have seen these first hand, from my travels, and can say that they work very well without having a driver.
From my experience, I wouldn't trust exposing bear screens to anything. No matter how tough they are they will always end up getting scratched, be this digital camera, cell phone or whatever else is small enough for the pocket. The only real solution is get a skin, with screen protector or get one of the stick screen films designed for digital cameras.
I already got my self an iskin for my iPod, just to prolong the life of the base product. And for the iPod nano there is already a good selection from Decal Girl/
Truth I really feel that if we, as humanity, spend time in space then we are all a winner. The only ego that really needs somewhere to go is that of humanity as a whole. If friendly races and competitions help us eventually get beyond the outer reaches of our solar system then it will have been healthy. Just don't let personal egos get in the way of the the one that really needs some support.
The moral of the story seems to be if you want to be effective as a terrorist you need to be wearing an Armani suit, black shoes, brief case, have huge amounts cologne and look at the police when you walk past. Seems to that to blend in you need to stand out. This is why things are so screwed.
If you are a nerd who doesn't give a damn, has no sense of dress and is also working in the electronics field, then you are screwed - just keep out of London.
If any form of limitation of blogging of politics is imposed, then who is to decide what is and what isn't a political blog? Could the slightest complaint about the roads not getting fixed be construed as a political viewpoint that should be censored?
the problem with the way osx does ftp though, at least through finder, is that it mounts it as a filesystem, and when the remote ftp site goes out to lunch it sometimes takes osx with it
This actutally a big issue that needs to be fixed on MacOS X, and it is not just limited to FTP. Any network mount that goes off-line causes the Finder and any other open/save dialogues to block. In certain cases I have been gone 15 minutes and I still see the color-wheel spinning.
I have noticed a number companies, including Dell and Microsoft, where you read about a product announcement and then go to their site only to find yourself having to use the search engine to find the product. At least when Apple makes a product announcement it is on the front page, and not hiding away hoping nobody wants to see it.
Since we keep on hearing the RIAA and MPAA wanting to apply these flags to prevent any sort of copying, I was wondering whether people would accept something else: degraded copies.
The idea being that you can record anything off the air, but video quality is reduced to that of an average VHS and audio to that of an audio tape. This was you can at least have a local copy, but it isn't as good as the one you can get in the shops. This may sound like what Macrovision tries to do, except Macrovision varies the colour intensity, so you wouldn't want to watch the copy either way.
Because nothing will show Sony the error of their DMCA/DRM ways like skyrocketing sales of their DRM CDs...
This is the thing that sucks. What will most probably end up happening is that more people will simply become more aware of how to circumvent the copy-protection to listen to it on their MP3 players. People still want to listen to music. Either way companies like sony will continue living in their ivory towers.
Judging by the number of times people on/. said something wouldn't work or would not find a market and the opposite happening, shows that trying to analyse the market based on your own personal preferences just does not work. Remember what was said about the iPod shuffle and the iPod mini?
Cell phone companies are using MP3 phones as the next feature to get people to upgrade. In Asia people love gadget phones. North America is really a back water, and even in the stone age, when it comes to mobile phones - we don't have the selection and we don't even necessarily have the latest phones. I am not sure whether that is due to the customers or because of the fragmented networks (most countries are 100% GSM).
At the same time Motorola still hasn't quite got it when it comes to design. The still act like an electronics company, with little to no design sense. It is probably for reasons such as these why Ericsson teamed up with Sony.
For all its worth, I feel that if any department is really making any strides in good UI development it is their Mac department. If Microsoft can the integrate those benefits into their other products, then good for them.
I just have one pet peeve and that Office 2004 (for MacOS X) still needs to support the Cocoa clipboard data types. This one little issue causes it to embed images that can't be displayed on the PC side. Remember that Office use OLE containers and will include what ever data type is put into the document.
They have only just released the iPod nano, so I can't see Apple releasing a new one immediatly. Also, this new Flash memory has only just been released, so experience indicates that first batches of anything usually have more teething issues than future batches.
Since all too often fake sites and spams have complicated URLs to hide the fact they are not from the real site, I was thinking of coloured URLs in the status bar, or address field. The idea is that each component of the URL would be hilited, or at least just the site, so people can quickly work out what the site is. For example:
Many people would see www.apple.com, and not the phishersinc.org address. By hiliting the host name people should see quicker the issue:
http:\\www.apple.com:0182093487209480923@phishersi nc.org/32976423923649326493269
*note: forward slashes converted to back slashes to avoid being converted to link
Hey, I don't mind if they stay on strike at the moment since at least we are getting BBC news instead. Much more international content, and not just that which is rating oriented.
We really need the CBC/Radio Canada to be sorted out - this needs to be a channel for the citizens, not for the advertisers.
This is the sort of thing that Nintendo has been criticising for a while. They have actually stated that they would rather make a console that is easy to develop for, than one that has the all the latest bells and whistle.
The only thing that is holding Nintendo back now is the "family oriented" image they have always paraded. It will be interesting to see if Nintendo maintains this approach, or whether they will change this?
Don't forget that word documents are actually OLE containers, alowing embedding of an OLE object, much like a plugin in a web page. In fact it is that aspect that causes problems sometimes, when the plug-in software is not installed on the platform where it is being viewed.
For my 5c worth, MS Office is a good piece of software, but I just find it a little too expensive for using at home. If it was $200 CAN, or less, as opposed to $700 then I might actually consider paying for it.
I have used the MacOS X version of office, and except for the major issue of not supporting Cocoa data formats, in the copy-paste process, its a very useable piece of software. I just wish they would address the outstanding issues. See this thread for more infor on the copy-paste issue. NeoOffice on the Mac still feels like it could do with a fair bit of GUI refinement.
After the Ubisoft PR department pretending to be the dev team:
;)
"Is this really the developer team answering these questions?"

While glass is harder to scratch, it is also easier to chip and you don't want to have chipped glass going into your pocket.

How about:
:)
- a Linux implementation, with OpenGL?
- a beowulf cluster of these

Audioconsumer: Pristine digital copies from noisy analog sources.
As far as I can see from visiting the site, the software does not really exist.
Since we keep on hearing the RIAA and MPAA wanting to apply these flags to prevent any sort of copying, I was wondering whether people would accept something else: degraded copies.

CentralNIC is a second-level domain owner. They can do whatever their customers will let them do with *.uk.com.
Exactly. Had it been *.co.uk or *.us it would have been another matter.

Why in the world does it cost $80?
;)
The word 'elite' or maybe it costs more than you think not to print characters
Gabe Newell and his crew at Valve are the most overrated game developers on earth. People treat him like a God, but what did he really do?
;)
Oh, I thought god worked for ID Software
At least ID Software's software uses OpenGL and OpenAL, which make it portable friendly (unlike Valve's)

I'm pretty sure that one day aliens will come across the remnants of our civilization...
That's assuming that laziness is not universal.
