    I think this was (partially) implied in the submission head line. But has anyone ever heard of a virus, etc.. that searched for a mic and then streamed its content to a file elsewhere? Could this data be quietly transmited (i.e. compressed enough). Could it even hijack XP. Man, maybe /. paranoia is getting to me, but isn't a default enabled listening device kinda insecure. &creepy~~~

    Seems the whiners are having trouble seeing merit in this project.

    I didn't see it mentioned, but astronomers always complain about our inability to track dangerous objects(like we could only track ten percent of the sky). It seems that with a few iterations of this project, when a few complete pictures have been taken, on could begin to plot the course of the objects that move with simple algorithms.

    Asking why a project such as this is worthwile is like asking why where decoding DNA.

    so now you have a little piece of cell wall !crawling ! around.

    So we construct a "self-propelled nanoscale robot" out of cellular material.

    If we found something similar to these robots on another planet? Wouldn't we consider it, a simple form life?

    Isn't this about another group of people that thinks it needs to make a profit? Sure, the current handling of copyrite is absurd, but do we want to see a case won in this way?

    Economic and profit concerns have driven the wheels of Justice for a long time now. This shouldn't be surpriseing considering Right to profit is equated to life and liberty in of our constitution.

    In my opnion this case is about people given full credit and ownership of an idea that couldn't have been created without the science and advancements to date of the rest of society.

    You should get your cut of the profit for being first, but eventually you need to give whats due to the gaint whose shoulders your standing on. Hopefully this campaign finance reform bill will have the effect of preventing such one sided special interest laws.

    This(of robots able to work in tandem) actually ia already patented...

    its called Utility Fog

    Unfortunately.. if thier made out of carbon compounds, and can self replicate (cheap production) the importance of control becomes life threatening... that with no OFF switch = the blob.

    Now.. According to Moore's Law (which has held tru to date) the # of transitors will double every 18 months: Currently Intel post 42,000,000 transitors in 2001 (a little math) which means we will have cpus in 18 years with about 172 billion transistors. And in 30-35 years...352,321,536,000,000 (thats what the calculator said)

    And the brain has 100 billion neurons.

    which means the time is not far off (this ingnoreing quantum computing and beowolf clusters and p2p techs)

    I know its twenty years off but if terr0rist can theoretically build advanced nuclear devices today who knows what information will be purchaseable in 20 years.

    Ray Kurzweil talked alot about this in The Age of Spritual Machines. His comment on this:

    (paraphrased) "We'll all be standing knee deep in a flammable liquid waiting for anybody to light a match. All we can do is build enough fire existinguishers."

    I definately agree with this article, atleast in the sense of the physiological effect. I have a friend with whom I am evenly matched, and our games always ended up with atleast one or more crescendo moments where the entire game changes for better or for worse... and in the precedeing and following moments, I have noticed on several occasions an increased heart rate and alertness.
    What I dont agree with is the paranoid part... the article just seems to throw that in.

    Unconventional thinking? what the hell is conventional thinking?

    Also: this article seems to be about male players... what about female players...

    Anyway its interesting that the same thing that enhances my sense during a rollercoaster (adrenaline+testosterone) also is probable released when I play chess.. I wonder when else this happens:

    I guess(sp) the same people who wouldn't care enough to turn off automatic downloading would likely be the same Joe Schmoe user who wouldn't download the patch.

    But i still dont like that they gave themselves a backdoor that is enabled by default...

    Could microsofts dominance now present a great enough danger when its politically important, to cause the initiation of Federal oversight of thier secureity procedures.(sp.. I know)

    Wonder how far it could go...

    Can they be held responsible in the future, now that they have been warned, if thier bugs allow "terrorist" to wreak havoc.

    Considering that the earth 90% water and how little we have catalouged the deep sea, its going to be interestig to see what we find...

    When this story originally surfaced, I think only Mcaffree(sp?) anounced that thier software would not detect the "Magic Latern". The no others I can think of said they would leave a backdoor open.

    Wonder if the people at Mcaffree changed thier minds when they saw they would be the only one.
