    Tablets are supposed to be the escape from that maintenance nightmare, and you people are trying your damnedest to turn it back into a spec-obsessed nerd playground.

    If you read the thread the only reason they are discussing hardware is so that they can determine what tablets can run the required software.

    I don't have the patience to explain it to someone who can't be bothered to pay attention.

    Well actually either you think you've discovered something unique about the Vista/7 release not present in 95/95, 2000/XP, etc... suggesting you haven't been paying attention or you are indeed trying to explain this to people that haven't been 'bothered to pay attention' for the past 18 or so years in which the same pattern exists with Windows releases.

    I looked at the developer preview long enough to get frustrated that I couldn't figure out how to do some really obvious and simple tasks. That's all the time most users will want to spend on it.

    Ignoring the nuclear aspect for a moment: you trust Bill Gates to deliver? Seriously, with his track record?

    Bill Gates isn't developing this, but anyway have a look at how far the Gates Foundation has reduced Malaria, and look at how ubiquitous the personal computer is. I think even if he was the one developing this based on his track record he would deliver.

    Substitute 'Irrational' - which you've clearly already resolved anyway - and it's fine.

    There is nothing irrational about being against the most dangerous, polluting and expensive method of boiling water ever conceived.

    Um, well, they look identical except Windows 7 works?

    If you distribute Windows XP with the 'Classic' theme enabled you could say the same thing about it and Windows 95, but of course that would mean ignoring the actual differences that go beyond the immediately cosmetic (well actually 7 doesn't have that sidebar that Vista had so even there that's a pretty obvious difference).

    If you've used the developer preview you can see that if you're not interested in Metro-style apps then the only real difference is the start menu, which is the Metro-style launcher. Using Office or Photoshop or any traditional Windows app on Win8 is no different to Windows 7.
    The major differences are the changes for touch and tablets, but if the users are not - as you say - interested in "new and different" then they won't be using any of that stuff anyway.

    No it hasn't. If boxen builders choose to select these mobos and not give out the keys to distros, Linux will not be allowed to be installed on said machine.

    Choose what mobos? Ones that have secure boot and don't allow it to be disabled? Who's making those?

    No box builder is going to risk their "loyalty discounts" for their OEM windows.

    Then why aren't they locking down BIOSes to prevent Linux from running now?

    There's a compelling argument to be made that there's enough similarity that the two are no more different than Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 R2 and that the naming schemes are arbitrary marketing decisions.

    So you're saying that since Western Digital made this hard disk in a rectangular black case with rounded corners, nobody else is allowed to put any device in a rectangular black case with rounded corners.

    No, i'm saying who the hell cares. Both companies made a device with a design that is a black, matte plastic shell with rounded corners, shiny edges and a shiny embossed logo and it doesn't matter.

    That's why the Apple TV is in a square black case with rounded corners, not a rectangular black case with rounded corners.

    And that's why the galaxy is a 16:10 where the ipad is a 4:3 rectangle...but again, who the hell cares, they have clearly different branding just like on these two devices. If you want an ipad you buy an ipad, not a galaxy tab, that's what i did and it wasn't that hard. If you want a WD elements you don't buy an AppleTV. The fact that they share the same design elements doesn't matter.

    I'm sure you can find plenty of examples of such things, look here's one:
    Someone is copying someone else's design.

    But who really cares? In terms of tablets Samsung's says Samsung, Apple's has a big Apple logo on it, if you want an Apple iPad you're hardly going to buy a Samsung Galaxy Tab just because from the front they look similar, albeit with differences such as logo, buttons and aspect ratio.

    If Samsung had changed a single thing on their products there would be no case. Square buttons or a different colour or differently shaped speakers. Anything and the case would never have even been filed.

    Square buttons? Where should the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the device in question, have put square buttons?

    There is one very good reason to complain about the takedown. The way it was done. USA shouldn't be able to close a Korean site down without the help of Korean officials and it should be based on Korean law, now US law.

    I agree with your premise but the sites were registered in the US with a US firm, if they were registered in Korea there is nothing ICE could do about it (though im sure that wouldn't stop them from trying).

    Which is why the idea that In this case, the closed-source iOS is actually respecting your privacy more than the Open Source Android is just rubbish since CarrierIQ is completely separate to Android.

    But it doesn't change the point. Open Source doesn't protect you against crap like this.

    Of course not, that's obvious, running an open source program on windows won't protect you from a rootkit, just like running an open source android version on a device that also includes some proprietary software won't protect you from anything malicious that proprietary software does.

    No, that's obviously false because CarrierIQ is not a part of Android, which is precisely the reason it is not present in all Android devices. It is installed on the device alongside Android by some handset manufacturers. This should be pretty obvious even if you aren't familiar with the software in question given that it is the handset manufacturers (that don't make Android) that are embroiled in this and not Google (who do make Android).

    the point i was trying to make is that newer phones are better, but not 'OMG-that's AMAZING' sort of better. they're all clones now, with only minor differences in capability/features across manufacturers and price ranges.

    That was pretty much always the case though, from the early analog handsets with monochrome screens and no applications the connectivity evolved, the screens evolved and as a result of the power evolving the applications got better. The differences across Nokia phones (well just about all phones) in the late 90s was little more than form factor.
