NASA is a clear demonstration to the world of Americas ingenuity and power. I think at times like these we should be looking to provide them with more funding rather than cutting their budgets.
Now I won't name any names, but a lot of countries out there have no idea about the things we do. Even if the ruling parties are aware of our accomplishments, the children of said countries are not taught about the ingenuity or power of our country. Their schools are often little more than conformity factories where the minds of the youth are shaped to fit the political goals of the rulers. Thus, the population is ignorant of our history, to the point that all they know is we are the enemy who would suppress them or kill them as quickly and painfully as possible. This is the environment in which terrorists grow.
In other words, if we put a human on Mars, terrorists around the world won't stop to marvel at the beauty of mankind's success. We might just need those extra billions of dollars when the you-know-what hits the fan. And I don't mean sh!t.
As far as I know, the under 17 w/o parent at an 'R'-rated movie isn't a law, it's just something the theaters choose to follow.
Before he left office, President Clinton reached a deal with most major movie theater owners to enfore the under-17 admittence guidlines. While not quite an executive order, estimates say the agreement has cost many movie studios millions of dollars in lost revenue (I know, poor Hollywood). But, in a related note, profit maximization for studios often causes them to edit films to obtain the PG-13 rating. So, movies like 'Joe Dirt' might have sucked anyway, but more families would watch it than adults, so the movie goes from potentially funny to automatically lame because the best parts never make it to the audience.
There are already machines availabe which are powerd by the human body and use centrifugal force to simulate gravity on the body system. It has shown to be effective in minimizing bone loss and improving circulation in space. It's also a good exercise and time killer/filler when there isn't much else to do on a ship. The crew can't always be avoiding asteroids and conducting experiments.
Not an engineer here, but at all my jobs I end up being the go-to guy because I figure out the "thinking man's" solution to the problem. It sometimes takes hours to solve the puzzle. I'm no genius, I'm just tenacious. If people think I'm weird, it's just because my results are unconventional. But methods mean nothing if the solution isn't applicable. So be quirky if you need to be!
I have a friend who is a police officer. When a telemarketer calls, he identifies himself and tells the telemarketer to identify himself as part of an ongoing investigation, informing him a failure to do so would be a cause for a charge of obstruction of justice.
If the telemarketer objects, the officer will tell him he is able to trace the phone numbers anyway, so he might as well not screw around with him (although he uses more genteel terms like cooperation and appreciation).
The telemarketers never want to give out their actual names, addresses, business addresses, home phone and business phone numbers, reason for calling, and describe to the officer their knowledge of his phone number and personal affairs.
Most are just trying to make a buck and get a little confused and worried when they start getting questioned.
This doesn't really do anything to cut back on the number of incoming calls, so read all the other posts about the 'do not call list' if you want to know about that.
F everyone here who has posted some generic statement saying he supports the US "not killing innocent people" and reccomends they not make any mistakes. What the hell is that supposed to mean?
Look at the way the government has responded to these attacks. More than three weeks after the attacks, with US agencies working around the clock to get a grip on the situation, preliminary military strikes have occured on specific an known targets, most of which have been abandoned long ago in fears of just such an attack. This isn't an armada of weapons landing throughout the country to eradicate all possible terrorists. The government is doing everything it can to prevent the loss of innocent lives, and you can be damn sure they are giving everything they can to prevent the kind of mistakes and shortsighted efforts which would only serve to make the situation more painful and deadly for the entire world.
While the US et al are kicking terrorists' asses all over the world, we still need to keep an eye on our backs as the possibility of another terrorist attack is so high, it is a question of when, not if.
I support the government all the way. I have faith in our system and our goals, and I believe that while there will be no absolute defining victory or triumph over all terrorists, our efforts will save the lives of thousands, possibly (dare I say) millions of people.
I love it when people suggest research money should only be spent on specific things. What a joke. Discovery, progress, and ingenuity are not boxable. Now I'll make a joke about some guy who was wasting his time studying mold and something good came out of it. .
MP3 music file downloads on the Napster service dropped 36 percent in April compared to March, according to Internet research firm Webnoize.
If the economy is going down the crapper, wouldn't the use of free services go up? Or maybe people stopped using Napster once they cancelled their DSL subscription, because the economy is going down the crapper.
According to his plans, a pickup truck will be waiting to drive him to a group of bleachers where fans and 12 Hooters bar girls will pour champagne all over him.
Sounds like a lot of fun. Of course, travelling at "four times the speed of sound" might be a bit more intense than cheering fans and a dozen Hooters girls, but not by much.

During re-entry, a giant airbag will deploy to slow the descent.
I'm thinking an airbag won't help much no matter how giant it is. Maybe if it just deploys on impact.
Medical professionals say the revolution is being fueled by a universal demand for remote patient management. With less face-to-face time available for patients, physicians and health-care managers say they want new techniques to deal with patient needs.
This is another sign of a decline in healthcare due to greed. Patients are increasingly being treated as secondary to money in the health care game. This ability will be used to increase the profits of the health-care businesses by cutting costs, decresing personal interaction between doctors and patients, and increasing the workload per doctor.
Just hope you don't end up with any remotely communicable implants. You'll probably end up paying for treatment you don't directly receive from doctors you never directly meet. .
Wasn't Titan the destination of the ship at the end of the movie? Maybe there's something worth seeing after all, but I wouldn't sit in an incinerator scrubbing the dead skin cells off my body to find out. But that's just me. .
