Thanks to Worlfram for "discovering" something that Musicians have known for millenia. Music is a mathematical thing by nature.
Why do you think things are measured in 4/4 time? Or we music has whole=1 half=1/2 quarter=1/4 eigth=1/8 sixteenth=1/16 32nd and 64th notes? Math governs the cadence and rythm of music.
So, it's not a leap to create music which sounds similar to a different style in a computer. Different musical styles have thier own unique characteristics. For instance, Jazz might have an accented 3-2-3 (swing) rythm. Where as classical is point-counter-point with a uniform rythm.
He should have politely informed them who he is, his significance to the Open Source and Free Software movements and flatly refused.
Instead he did so, but in terms of invoking satan, calling them clueless, conjuring the childish image of him "pissing on MS' grave" among other things.
There are ways to tell someone to "go to hell" without actually saying the words. All ESR did here was embarass himself and, to some degree, the very movement he cares about. Because if anyone ever wanted proof that this movement is made up of people who are childish... he's provided it to them.
Second, a critique of what he thinks of himeself:
Yes, he wrote, the Cathedral and the Bazaar. BUT only about 5-7 years AFTER RMS had already been doing Free Software. Arguably much of the "theory" ESR claims for himself was borrowed from RMS.
"When they are finished with it" is a phrase open to much interpretation. I would be "finished with it" after I had used it for about a year and refilled it a half-dozen times or so.:)
Actually I went to the University of Maryland College Park. I attended on campus. In case you care to check it out, the University of Maryland is rated one of the top ten in the nation for Computer Science.
Most people in masters programs are usually only in them so they can avoid joining the work force where they might actually be held accountable for their incompetence, or so they can feel justified in spouting off such drivel as seen in your post because they know everything.
I have been in the work force for almost 15 years and in that time have dealt with numerous holders of various "certifications". I have found almost all of them lacking, since they do not know some of the fundamentals. You'll also note that I didn't say "every IT professional on [E]arth" (you're supposed to capitalize when referring to the planet, btw) I said "*most* people who *only* have certs are idiots" not all.
In addition, I have been personally recognized by many of the employers that I have worked for as a top performer in the field.
I understand how you, most likely being a certificate holder yourself, might feel some animosity towards someone who points out the truth. You have my sympathies.
So who would want to hire them anyway. I, have a degree in Computer Science and I'm currently currently working on my Masters. I have a love for this work and this industry.
Most people who seek certifications are only in it for the money. And most of the people I've worked with or who have worked under me who have only had certs have been somewhat clueless.
I'm sure I'm going to get flamed... so have at it. The truth hurts.
I appears that Creationism and Fundamentalism are on the rise.
A good resource for people who use reason and know that evolution is the only possibility should check out evowiki. It gives some pretty good counter arguments to use against creationists and other fundumentalist moro^H^H^H^H types.
It won't happen because it will put the current freon industry out of business. We're talking jobs here people. And since when has progress ever stopped us from propping up a failing business model before?
The freon manufacturers will lobby congress to have the new invention tied up in a mess of approvals and tests and other some such things that by the time it makes it to market it will be so expensive no one will ever want to buy it.
If it makes it to the market at all. And when it does, the freon manufacturers will again lobby to have it declared unsafe, or worse, unamerican to use Peltier-effect based air conditioners.
I am planning to do just that. The petition I have created now has plenty of signatories!! I am going to send a copy of the petition to the members of the commitee for intellectual property, the patent commissioner and my congressmen.
I think you're drawing a conclusion based on a limited set of people and applying it across an entire population. By definition your assertion is false since there exists at least one hacker, developer, etc. who is good at spelling & grammar.
Have you ever noticed how people are starting to stereotype developers? For example saying "All developers are X", where X is some bad trait?
I don't care that they've included the stuff. I'm addressing the "we've got no problem with Open Source". This after the whole "GPL is unconstitutional" and "Communist" shit they've been throwing around.
If they don't have a problem with Open Source, why are the alleging in federal court that the GPL is unconstitutional?? I mean we all know that this is total and complete bullshit, but still.
Don't bald face lie to us, Mr. Stowell. As you've no doubt realized, the FLOSS community is tireless in it's pursuit of what's right, relentless in it's pursuit of the truth, and has virtually unlimited resources with which to make it happen.
There should be a modification to the law which says that if you don't develop the patented invention or have not made any moves to either licence the patent for development and pratical application by someone else after a period of three years, your patent shall pass into the public domain.
Such a change would allow people who actually invent something to have the protection of the law and would get rid of all of these companies which act as patent litigation houses.
The only possible issue with such a modification might be the question of what qualifies as sufficient effort towards development.
Oh well.:) Can't take it, sorry.:) Linux trounces the *BSDs in performance and the sheer amount of supported hardware. It's difficult to see how *BSD can possibly measure up.
If you wanted to make the BSDs relavent, perhaps you should not have focused on these narrow bits of the industry: security, portability, etc and instead focused on the larger picture, which linux has been doing since day one.
Users don't care. They just want it to work, period. :)

This was by Benjamin Franklin, not FDR.

Indeed. I saw that in the decision. I agree with that. It is an enforcable contract.

GJC
IANAL. Anything which has been available to the public for more than a year is considered to be prior art, according to patent law.
This patent will obviously fail that particular test and piss Apple off in the process.

Thanks. GJC
Sounds like DeBortoli just earned my business.

No, not canned arguments. The wiki does give some background on the counter arguments and attempts to educate.

Actually, you're correct. I thought of that just after hitting "Submit". :)
Oops... didn't notice that.
My apologies, still slashdot's mechanism for deciding what does and doesn't get posted sucks relatively badly.
Also, given that:
1) I normally post at 2 and
2) My karma is excellent
You're wrong about my mod points. Have a nice day.

It's more interesting because it was submitted this time by CowboyNeal.
Don't you know how things work here at Slashdot? Despotism at it's best.
