KDE 4.0 is about cleaning up the backend all the way (or whatever).

The big improvements for the users are to be added in point releases (which should be pretty big, like in gnome), with all of the KDE 4 promises to be built on the better backend which is getting finished up now.

Yes, but when it comes down to it 1/100th of a percent of the voting population in a single state was the difference between our current deadlock, and possible sweeping reforms.

I am not saying either is good, but a very small amount of votes amplified signifigantly the power balance, and I think that is a fairly unique setup (for good or for bad)

  3. Re:Quite right. on California Sues E-Voting Vendor ES&S · · Score: 3, Informative

In Europe minority votes count for something and you have more than 2 credible parties. That makes rigging an election far less valuable.

In the US just a few thousand votes in a key are brings your party from a lot of control (president) to very little (Democrats in the Senate and House can't get shit done).

With razor thin margins and 49% of the vote counting for nothing it is possible to subtly change the votes and drastically alter the political landscape.

In 2000 Florida was withing 1/100th of 1% (0.01%) and would have made Gore the president. I doubt there is many places in the rest of the world where so few people in such a small area could cause such a dramatic shift. This makes the risk/reward analysis in the US much different than other places with your minority reresentation and 3+ parties.

I don't know if it is possibly to match gameplay depth from 360 to Wii, especially for a sanbox style game, but if it were I would be all-over it.

There has to be a lot of one gamer families that got a Wii (of course maybe 360 is cheap enough now that they have that too).

COD4 I would be less excited about but pick up when it was a "classic hit" or what not.

I do try to keep things on track in emails and even /. posts and text messages to a point. This post though is an example of what can happen when focussing on speed and not correctness (usually I would at least correct "imperitive" and "focussing".

The XO is not a substitute for a computer. It is a substitute for a text book and somewhat word processor/typewriter (keys are small though).

It allows techers to send notes home to illiterate parents, and parents to respond back (camera/microphone). It allows for reading off of the internet, an ebook, or teachers notes.

The cost of text books can be crippling, event he cost of printing could allow one of these to pay for itself with enough use. Simply as a monochrome e-book reader with a pull cord for power it has quite a bit of value, the logic based games and other computer-like funtionality are a bonus. Internet access (where available is also great, but I expect the receiving of reading materials over the mesh is where this will shine. Everything else is just extra.

I hope we will see efforts for K-12 level text books that are free and open like the reading one recently posted here.

For half the price of a laptop this is a tool for educating, not a tool for computing. And it probably does a better job of educating in environments where dusk and dirt (Africa etc.) and spills (classroom) are a regular part of the day.

Also, pull chord is a very compelling extra (don't know if it will be available though).

The spill-proof design also has some value to me (business part is in screen and keyboard is sealed).

I personally can't wait to see what the XO gets for it in the hands of hackers (either in the form of full distros or addons to sugar OS).

The problem is that once a lot (or eve a few more) people do it this way the I want more people to do this demographic is not guaranteed (works the same way with Linux games I imagine, the developers of cross platform games probably get a large (more than the 1-3% of users) Linux base, but because we want to encourage them (at least I know I've purchased over priced and old games for $30+ instead of the $10 bargin bin it would have been).

Radiohead reaped massive publicity that noone the next person will get half as much of, and soon no publicity will come with it.

That being said, magnatunes is awesome and has a lot of artists with name your price ($5 minimum) if you want to encourage more).

I purchased the album at $9.00 (I wanted to do $8.00, but the fee got me). I have always believes $5-$10 was the correct price for an album, and when given the choice I figured I should do it. Magnatunes says their average sale is about $7.50 so my theory bears out to point.

Magnatunes gives 50% to the artist, and keeps the rest for themself, which is a decent deal for both (magnatunes I assume incurs all costs). They also vet the bands so as a customer you aren't wading through shit to get the goodsm thewy also stream full tracks (my current amarok playlist is all streamed magnatunes.
