(quote from article):Casey, a sexpot college student and aspiring dancer in tight jeans who is playing jailbait decoy today because her landlord dad owns this house. (Added bonus: Local prosecutors wrote her college a note so she could get out of a chemistry test.) Casey gabs to potential predators on the phone. "Come on over, we're not going to get caught," she says. "If we got caught, I would get into trouble, and everybody would call me a slut, and I don't want that, either. I'll pay for your gas. It's no big deal, trust me. My dad gave me plenty of money for the weekend." When the guy fails to take the bait, her voice rises in pitch. "OK, fine, whatever, lame. L-A-M-E. You're being a baby. I told you I've done it a million times!"

I don't know a lot about programming or security issues, so correct me if I'm wrong, but if the above is true, what I am hearing is that (1) OS X isn't as secure as I thought (as an unabashed Apple fanboy, I consider this a bad thing), (2) It's so insecure that Apple had to sacrifice some functionality in order to patch it (again, this is a bad thing, even though I've never heard of UPnP before today and have no idea whether I will miss it). BUT (3) In the end, this is all Microsoft's fault.
I don't care that people want a PC or a Pontiac or a Big Mac with super-sized fries.....more power to 'em I say! But... but... they can get bigger fries, with more grease, for less money at Jack in the Box!!
They need to run this thing in dance clubs. People dancing all night long; surely all that energy can be put to use. And why not gyms? Tap into "spinning" bicycles and treadmills directly.
They have this great new program going on where they will pay you for forwarding email. They will pay you $245 for every person you forward an email to, and then another $243 for every person who forwards that email, and so on. Within two weeks, Microsoft will contact you for your address and then send you a check!
Azureus has had a remote web interface plugin for a long time. Is there an OSX client with similar functionality? Or, better, one you can control via a shell using ssh? It seems like it should be an easy thing to do but the basic bittorrent client for OSX doesn't have it.
How do you talk the enemy into only shooting rounds off where you have your trucks waiting? It seems if you can convince them to do that, you might be able to convince them to stop shooting at you.
It does NOT do HDTV, it has only one tuner, and frequently needs to be left turned off at night... it sometimes takes a couple minutes to do "something" when I turn it on. It doesn't inteface with my PC in any way, and I managed to lock it up a few weeks back... Had to unplug it to get it working again. Wow - sounds great! Where do I get one? This sounds like more fun than my Windows 98 box!
I'm no expert on the technology involved, but I'm guessing that if you know that incoming rockets/mortar are in the air with enough time to get the trucks in position and shoot them down with a laser, you also have enough time to get out of the way, and you probably already have a bead on the source of the fire. Any laser-equipped trucks with an actual ability to shoot down incoming missiles and objects will of course become the first target of any such attacks. I'm not saying this tech is useless, but I'm not sure it would change much in the long run.
And it's a good thing we had such a measured and non-sensational response to that situation....
It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye... or at least an eyebrow!
Seriously though I know the perfect use for this -- long distance fly swatter!
Just see the first post on this article.
On another note, I can't believe I've been reading slashdot long enough to remember such a thing....
Australia? Is that in the Valley?
grandparent is wrong. The "F" in "FISA" stands for "Foreign"; the claim that FISA should only apply to domestic calls is ridiculous.

Besides the blog cited, I saw something about this at this link.

was when Battlefield Earth came out.
I got exactly one result for this search: the parent comment.
because that song's not whiney a bit.
Stupid, UNTIL you think about ithe big picture....
iThe? So we even have to use Apple naming conventions with definite articles now?

You know what this means, folks: Apple is dying!!
Or at least beleaguered anyway....
