So I guess the moral of the story is, don't get caught, or don't use the schools network to download your movies Or just use the school's computer labs to download them.
It also turned out that Geller owned no more than eight seconds of the 13 minutes of video, according to Geller's own court filings.
IANAL by I know people are allowed to copy a small percentage for fair use. 8 seconds in 13 minutes sounds like it would fall within that margin.
Re-read the sentence you're quoting. It says that Geller only owned 8 seconds out of 13 minutes, not that only 8 seconds of his 13 minute video were used. In fact the whole 13 minutes was posted, including 100% of the 8 seconds he claimed to own. (I still think he's full of shit on fair use grounds, but not for the reasons you cite).
And the result would be that I would be disincented to create works and post them to YouTube. So much for promoting the useful arts. "Useful arts"? A video of a cat flushing a toilet? I'm guessing that even if you really are disincented to post similar videos to youtube, the rest of us will still manage to get by.
That is roughly what Robert Pape concluded in his study Dying to Win. He notes that prior to 2000, Muslims were not the majority of suicide bombers. And among muslim suicide bombers, there are many from certain countries (e.g. saudi arabia) and few to none from other muslim countries (e.g. Iraq before 2003). He argues that it is the presence of an occupation force representing a democratic country (or a country whose policies can be influenced by public outcry) that leads to suicide bombing, not religion. His model has been criticized (it is based entirely on rational choice theory), but he certainly presents a compelling argument that religion (and certainly the balance of males to females) is not the issue.
It would have been nice to know about this a few days ago; the festival started Thursday and today is the last day. I'm not exactly close but I'm not too far; a road trip would not have been out of the question. The Washington Post article makes it sound like the 50,000 are "expected" to show up -- making it seem as if this thing will go on for a few more days. But according to this article, it ends today.
Please stop retarding the world with your garbage non-standard unit system. In other news, high amounts of caffeine seem to correlate with aggression and a tendency to lash out against others...
I just heard some sad news on talk radio - Sci Fi writer Robert Heinlein was found dead in his California home about nine years ago. There weren't any more details. I'm sure everyone in the Metafilter community will miss him - even if you didn't enjoy his work, there's no denying his contributions to popular culture. Truly an American icon.
I would buy a MacTablet in an instant, particularly if there was one at the MacBook price point. Or just a plain MacBook with touchscreen. Besides the applications that exist for ordinary laptop work - taking notes, web browsing, email on the go, etc. - this sort of thing would be perfect for DJs and musicians who perform with laptops. I use Traktor Scratch and Ableton Live, and even with a decent MIDI controller, you wind up having to touch the mousepad now and again during sets. It would be so much easier to interact directly with the onscreen interface rather than remember what MIDI control you assigned to which knob in the software.
I imagine for artists and photographers this sort of thing would be amazing too; I played around a bit with the Wacom Cintiq at an Adobe conference recently using Photoshop and it was just incredible. Way too expensive but a hundred times better than using a Wacom tablet. So I'm all for any step in the direction of a MacTablet or touchscreen monitor. I just wish I could order now it instead of the MacBook Pro I just ordered....
Certainly not from me. You're completely misinterpreting what I wrote. My point was that most terrorists may hate the US in principle, but their real goals are far closer to their homes -- they want power in Middle eastern countries that they see as allies or puppets of the US (and Israel). Consequently we see a lot more terrorism in those countries than in the US per se. But I think US actions as far as "fighting them over there" -- esp the invasion of Iraq -- have exacerbated the problem.
I'm guessing you don't live in London, Spain, Bali, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Jordan, or Iraq. There are in fact organized groups of terrorists out there, and they want to cause real damage. And, sadly, there are far more than a "few hundred" of them and they are hardly "nuts." You're right that the US Government has exaggerated the threat to the American homeland for its own purposes -- most of the terrorists are fighting closer to home to affect governments that have more direct interaction with them -- but to say these organizations don't exist is hiding your head in the sand.
I love it when they get it wrong.... It was 1500 accounts, not computers. The article says that many users were "taken offline." So we return to a variation of the original poster's question -- if taking 1500 users offline doesn't compromise operations in any way, what the hell are those users doing online anyway? Reading slashdot?
If you can hear it you can record it digitally. Yes but if we keep quiet about that maybe the RIAA will leave it alone.
apple fan here too but I couldn't resist :)
It's just kool-aid.
Don't be silly. The real reason Apple bought CUPS is so that everyone would have something to drink the kool-aid out of.
Perhaps it actually is the rampant copying of porn that the MPAA has their knickers in a bunch about?
That is really interesting that he said that.

I read your sig as an explanation of the kind of good it would do us...

Yeah! Tungsten Chews!!
(spitting out tooth)... What were we talking about again?
I'm willing to stop moving my arm for 40 femtoseconds if it will help.
the other laptop is a witch!
Forget that. Imagine reading Beowulf while sitting in the Sun petting a flop!
