It really has to do with the usability factor. A laptop is still hard to use comfortably as a desktop replacement.
Now if they would only do something about the slow-ass hard drives! I would never rely solely on a laptop until that is solved.
Ah, all these smart people making all these silly assumptions.
Answer me, oh you all knowing ones, if the bios is on a "small partition at the beginning of the drive", how the hell do you load it? You would need the bios to load the bios.
The BIOS is not on disk. The BIOS is in ROM. The only thing that is on disk is a Windows-based interface used to access the bios.
If that was true, then MS should be pushing now to sell NT server to everyone.
Maybe they will.. and when you register it, it will strip out server specific apps (domain admin, dhcp server, etc) based on your serial number.
It is a matter of configuration and extra goodies. Windows NT server for example comes with domain administration tools which are not present on workstation. With a workstation, you don't get DHCP server, DNS server, etc.
So, by not needing that, you pay less for Workstation than you do for server.
There is also other minor differences (support for more than X processors, etc)
The fact that the connections are limited on Workstation vs. server is pure greed.
Isn't this going to create an even bigger market for high quality, pirated MP3s? Why would you want to buy a protected CD from the music store when you can download a clean MP3 from the net and make as many high quality copies as you want?
"If the requirements are such that MySQL is *not* appropriate, then probably either PostgreSQL or Oracle is"
How funny.. why is SQL Server missing from that statement? How is Oracle any cheaper or more open sourced that SQL Server? They are just as bad as Microsoft, if not worse, when it comes to the database market.
What hate and jealousy will do to people's minds...
It is not the developer's job to worry about the price. If the boss/manager is willing to pay for SQL Server, then as far as the developer is concerned, the price is not an issue anymore.
He should of course make the boss/manager aware of the total cost of ownership. But choosing a lower performing solution when management is willing to pay for a higher performing one is idiocy.
Well, the industry already has a big profit margin on CDs. Given that the cost of pressing a CD is minuscule (a few pennies) and the final cost is about $15 which gives something like a 1000% markup, what would the new album cost if it was $10 just for the media? If they were to maintain their markup it would be quite expensive.
The american way is freedom. Freedom is good. Socialism bad. Welfare state bad.
I think any OS has to stand on its own merits and the government should not take sides either way.
Linux has a long way to go on desktops, and even on enterprise level server management.
Yet, open source in my opinion encompasses too much. I think GPL is bad. I may be in the minority here, but it's too marxist for my tastes. I think that the ideal open source license is BSD, and I would never consider writing anything under GPL.
Laws are made by people, some none more grown up than the adolescent masses. They are also made by special interest groups.
I don't know about Germany, but in the US the constitution was written in order to protect the right of few from the vocal majority (or minority, as the case may be)
If you accept everything that is written in the law books, you should turn yourself to the authorities for almost any sexual act save the missionary position. In many places in the US, the law still says oral sex is illegal.
Let me see...
San Francisco: Persons classified as "ugly" may not walk down any street. (we should enforce this one)
Seattle: "You may not carry a concealed weapon that is over six feet in length"
Washington state law: All lollipos are banned
Iowa state law: you may not kiss for more than five minutes
Iowa state law: a man with a moustache may not kiss a woman in public
Ohio state law: it is illegal to get a fish drunk
Oklahoma state law: you can be fined or arrested for making ugly faces at a dog
Oklahoma again: it is illegal to have sex before marriage
Oregon state law: it is illegal to whisper dirty things in your lover's ear during sex.
etc.. etc.. etc..

Slashdotters are so enamored with the fact that they can post, that they don't stop and think if they should.
Games are one of those things that get sold based on word of mouth, reviews, etc. I never bought a game because of an ad on tv or in a magazine. I either buy it when I browse the video store, or because I heard it is good.
Also, if they indeed manage to somehow stop kids from buying these games, the internet traffic in pirated games will increase.
It's probably very similar to the Compaq DL320/DL360 series (see here or quickspects here.).
We have a number of these as web servers, and yes, they hold two internal drives. For a web server, that is usually fine (2x36GB is usually plenty). However, you can always add an external array if you wish for. Of course, Compaq's dual 933MHz is a lot more respectable.
Microsoft is a big cracker target? They are notorious for weak protection on their products. When I got my Office 98 CD (legal, mind you, supplied by IM) it took me 4 tries to guess the serial number.
It will be tougher when their products start merging with dot-net. Imagine if most of your Whistler II doesn't totally live on your computer.
Are you talking about the OPK kits? They do have serial numbers.
But yes, for high security installations or corporate customers, the setups would be handled by IM groups. They do bypass any keys since the IM people are responsible for tracking licenses or buying site licenses.
Also, MS has worked long and hard to make their installations unattended and scriptable. Unattended installations would conflict with registering in the method outlined in the article, so there will be ways around it.

Perhaps you wish more articles on the latest Anime release? This is a step up. :)
Umm, because it's the de-facto database language?

Who'd run access as a web server backend? :)
Must be a slow news day.
How about some news that does affect more than seven people? Granted not the first choice of slashdotters, but it does affect a lot of people.

Granted, it's for the iPaq/Visor/HP, not the palm. But it's still cool.

Natl. Geographi already covered this a while back (1 or 2 issues back or so). The experiment was with turkeys, I believe.
And, it doesn't depend on gravity. The vibrations is what cause increased bone density (not growth).
It may also be a treatment against osteoporosis.

I do. It's the transport media in SneakerNet.
CDs have a big drawback. They don't fit in a pocket.

I have a nagging feeling this fiasco has to do with .NET and some non-technical report has totally misinterpreted it, or worse, sensationalized it.
:)
Just my guess.
