When was the last time you were harassed by a Scientology member?
When one of my University teachers became a scientologist and hijacked the whole class for months to discuss Dianetics as the "new science for management and self-improvement for success in the 21st century".
Problem is that since Scientology is not registered as a religion in my country, the school's heads were not aware of the inappropriateness of her actions and it took over three months of protests from several students for them to find out and sack her.
Well, my point is that people felt motivated to hack a mostly useless piece of free hardware like a barcode reader and make something moderately useful out of it.
Now, take something which is more powerful and potentially a lot more useful, like a netbook. People are going to be a lot more motivated to look for ways to hack that hardware into running other software.
Sure, because the invasion of Irak and Afghanistan was really useful to dismantle Al-Qaeda and bring Osama Bin Laden and friends to be tried in Geneva...
Since OO.o and Firefox are the two of the major "spotlight" apps of desktop Linux, I wouldn't expect Ubuntu to remove them from their "ubuntu-desktop" meta-package.
If you want to use a "less standard" Linux desktop, I would suggest switching distros... There are so many specialized distros, I am sure there's one for you
Okay, let's round up all the people that believe 2012 is in any way related to actual scientific fact, and let them go see The Invention of Lying. If they don't get the coincidence, explain to them it already is 2012 according to the Gregorian calendar...
Hey, don't bash that movie!
Its made by Roland Emmerich, who made other films of "obvious scientific accuracy" like Universal Soldier, Independence Day, Godzilla and The Day after Tomorrow!
Yes, yes, Tolkien was a noted philologist with plenty of knowledge about real-world languages... who had a huge hobby of making up fictional ones.
In fact, middle-earth was something of an afterthought... a place to put all those interesting fictional languages and pair them up with other fictional cultures.
While "dwarrow" is a logical, grammatical way to pluralize "dwarf" I still maintain that the word is a Tolkien invention.
I would be very interested if someone could provide an citation of the word "Dwarrow" from a pre-Tolkien source....Oh, and English is my second language, so there's no need to go Grammar-nazi on me, eh?

Or the :CueCat
Nice story, but be aware that everything the british royals do is heavily scripted (well, maybe the nazi costume wasn't)
There's a strong tradition that the royalty must serve in the armed forces, therefore they have to do it. They very likely don't do it by choice.
Win XP killed the Linux netbook
The fact that the manufacturers insisted on horrible, custom-made linux distros made in-house did not help
A dumb terminal with modern parenthood
I can pretty much imagine the bidding for which logo will be carved on the face of the moon...
Sure, because the invasion of Irak and Afghanistan was really useful to dismantle Al-Qaeda and bring Osama Bin Laden and friends to be tried in Geneva...
Or the way the princes of England are "serving" in their military
True, MS Paint is "nominally" a freehand drawing program
However, MS Paint and MS Office Picture Manager are the programs most Windows users use to do simple graphics jobs like cropping photos, etc.
Basically, my point is that there's no need for a featureful app like Gimp when a more basic photo editor app can do the job easier.
Back in those days, EVERYBODY wanted Matrix themes and screensavers
Funny, AND on-topic
I wish more slashdot comments were like this. Well done sir.

In Ubuntu, newbies don't even have to call up a terminal
Just open "Software Center" -> "Graphics" -> "Gimp" -> "Install"
That's the whole point, including a program that's more similar to Paint than to Photoshop
The virtue of Android, from the carrier's perspective, is that it allows them to create terrible branded user experiences.
And thus create a small industry out of people reinstalling the non-terrible, open source version of the same phone's software
I am pretty sure there are plenty of us who believe in Christ and in science at the same time.
I for one, do get tired of the instant flame fests that erupt every time christianity is mentioned here. So I avoid it. YMMV, of course.
You mean you don't remember Flash for ENIAC?
Sure, but in those days, "Flash" meant that a vacuum bulb had flared and died...

Just tell them there is no mention of Nibiru in the Bible
I did that, but apparently theres a mention of a "star called wormwood which will fall into the sea"
[facepalm]
As far as many of us go, MSN is the only important network
At least here in Mexico, people seem to think that "IM = MSN Messenger"
(its complicated... it has to do with the local phone monopoly being in cahoots with Microsoft...)
Well, the only .Net application I am currently interested in running does not run in Mono.
It requires "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1"

The version with Clamato is another drink, but the name escapes me for the moment...
I stand corrected, thank you
