  1. Red Hat Sales Team Party Today on CentOS Project Administrator Goes AWOL · · Score: 1

No better argument for paid support than news like this. Fortune 500 companies don't suddenly stop answering the phone.

Not that CentOS isn't a boon to RHT. But you can bet quite a few IT managers are having some heart burn this morning.

  2. Re:I see a trend on Yahoo! Buys del.icio.us · · Score: 1

Are you kidding me? Established players buying startups is what creates a more diverse web, precisely because entrepenuers can cash out. Expect this to only enrich the web as startups try to get their share of Google's IPO via buyouts.

As part of the kernel evolution towards modular naming, the functions malloc and mfree are being renamed to rmalloc and rmalloc. Compatibility will be maintained by the following assembler code: (also see mfree/rmfree below)

  5. No Longer GPL'd on ArsDigita Shut Down · · Score: 3, Informative

ArsDigita switched to the ArsDigita Public Liscense a few months ago when they released ACS 4.6. As you can imagine, this pissed off many people in the community. However the folks at OpenACS have ported ACS 3 and ACS 4.2 (both under the GPL) to Postgresql. Work continues, unabated by short-sighted VC's.

  6. Government Software on NASA Releases Classic Software To Public Domain · · Score: 1

So, why isn't all (non-classified) government software open-source? Haven't we already paid for it? Why is NASA the exception?

It seems to me that state governments in particular could drastically reduce software developement costs by reusing code already built by other states.

Just heard on the radio that another plane has been hijacked and is on route to Washington. A horrible decision must be made.

Well, I don't know about mySQL, but GreatBridge provides 24x7x365 support for PostgreSQL, which is also open source and said to be more scalable than mySQL.

  9. Consumer Reports on Honda Insight on Ars Reviews Honda Insight · · Score: 2
In the latest issue of Consumer Reports (August 2000, pp 8-9)*:
    ...

The Insight drives a lot like other small cars, but it feels slower, and you must shift the five-speed stick often to get the car up to speed and keep it there. Handling isn't so agile, either. On bumpy roads, the ride is stiff, almost harsh. That ride, the small cabin, and pervasive road noise can be fatiguing on long road trips. There's also little room for luggage.

In a suprising ommission, there's no cutoff switch for the passenger-side air bag. You shouldn't put a child saftey seat there.

Because the reduced gasoline use and reduced emissions are this car's reason for being, we were keen to clock the fuel economy. In the five months we've been driving the Insight, we've averaged just under 50 mpg overall and about 40 mpg** in city driving. Those numbers are impressive, but considering the Insight's shortcomings, we wonder what it really offers.

We'll have a full report on this car and the hybrid Toyota Prius later this year.
