Trim tabs are often found on only one side. Its specif use is to reduce the amount of force used to move the control surface. Also, if properly trimmed the aircraft will fly straight and level 'hands-off', and altitude can be easily controlled simply by making adjustments on the throttle.

Just how many pilots are in here anyway? I am.

It doesn't matter how many tests he passes. Racing those kind of aircraft is extremely physically intensive that demands a great deal of your neck muscles and your core fitness. No test is going to recreate that, and if he had to pass a Formula 1 driver test which is the only thing close enough in terms of what's required he'd fail straight away. Fitness is everything.

Dude, he was probably more fit at his age than you are.

The rail gauge is too close to dual gauge the track by conventional means (three rails). If you take the US Standard gauge of 4' 8.5" and then add the width of the rail head, it's already pushing into the Russian gauge of 4' 11". They would have to either adopt US Standard gauge or extrude a special dual gauge rail to make it dual gauge, and even then I'd be skeptical that it would really work. The only way to make it safe and reliable would be to adopt a single gauge or have bogies that adjust to a new gauge automatically. The danger there would be if a bogie fails to adjust. Instant derailment.

Just in case you are wondering, I have spent many years working in a track gang.

There is nothing wrong with taking a train, even if it takes 8 hours from the LA area to SF. Many of the railway stations are quite nice and as they are updated, they are more often than not getting better. My last rail trip (for work) was Emeryville, CA to Chicago, IL to do some work at Fermilab. It was a fantastic trip!

The problem with people these days is that they don't know how to slow down and savor the moment (or the simply just take the long way it's own sake). For fuck's sake, slow down and enjoy. No internet, no phones, no texting and no shit. Hang out in the bar car, read a book, get laid (oops, I forgot - this is Slashdot. Sorry).

If they could do a rail link from the US to Russia, you could get from Florida to the U.K. pretty much exclusively by rail. Now that's a trip! Hell, I'd do it.

It really depends on the type of tree planted. Many trees will require as much if not more water than the lawn. Cottonwoods are a good example - they require huge amounts of water - they grow in the Mojave desert along riverbeds and quite literally suck the river beds dry.

What you should be planting is native plants. They are not a huge burden on the water supply. In arid areas mesquite, ironwood and joshua trees are a good choices, but the do grow slowly. Many cacti are quite nice looking. They also can provide for better home security - just plant cholla along your fence line. It's also great around and below the windows of your house. Nobody in their right mind goes near the stuff!

Ummm.... I'd have to disagree. I propose that we have passed the maximum sustainable number quite a long while ago.

While resources may be abundant in some areas, there are many more areas that have to go without. My belief is that no population should have to rely on resources that have been imported from further away than just a couple hundred miles or so and even that is really pushing it. As the saying goes: Just because you can do something, it does not mean that you should. Or that it is even a good idea.

Serious effort should be made to encourage reasonable family sizes (read 2 kids max). The only way to do this would be economically - Reasonable tax breaks for one kid - less of a break for the second, none for the third, you pay for the fourth - etc. On welfare - it's mandatory birth control. Frankly, if you can not afford to have them - DON'T. The days of needing large families in first world countries are long gone. Religious directives against birth control are simply to swell their ranks to make a larger power base.

Foreign aid - Again don't just simply give food - it all has to be a package deal - give them the tools to take care of themselves and teach the wonders of proper birth control.
