is that they cost money. These days people are so used to getting everything for free on the internet. It is like mp3s, people are so used to getting them for free, that the transition to a payment system is incredibly difficult. There are going to be people who will resist any form of payment (everything should be free crowd) and there will likely be mirrors of any sites which require payments. Consider the fact that people hate the NYTimes registration even though that is totally free. It is only a matter of time before a bugme not equivelent is created for pay sites.
mod funny. haha north korea. FYI, think of how many koreans you know that call themselves south korean instead of korean and you will understand why korean is used.
as a resident of MA (and i am sure others will agree with me here) I have to wonder how much this is due to the desire to use open standards as it is because the money allocated to buy Office "disappeared". Money has a tendency to disappear here and things end up being more expensive than initialy planned. Take a look at the big dig, took 20 years to make, costing 9x more, just opened and it is already falling apart. Elected officials arent really elected, since we dont really have elections here, there is no opposition. We like to call it the peoples republic. My prediction; when more money is allocated or ms gives a bigger discount, they will switch back to office.
actually, ms has some linux products. a good example would be the windows media server and C# compiler which have linux versions. they probably did this because of the presence of linux in the server side of things. The logic this guy is using is that a similar thing will happen when linux has a bigger piece of the desktop. However, keep in mind that there is no asp.net version for linux or apache even though they are probably the majority of servers.
It really depends on what the political agenda of the person writing the story/the station is. On one hand the intention might be to make Bush look bad in which case, it is the biggest ever. On the other side, reduce panic and therefore say its recovering. If cnn said it was the biggst ever, they migth be accused of scaremongering.
Go look at some stories on democratic underground and you will see stories saying that Bush was responsible for hurricanes because of global warrming and a ton of "scientists" backing that. Look on michael moore.com and cindy sheehan has a post about jews who took soldiers away for war in iraq and not being here to stop the looting ( hello posse comitatus) in New Orleans.
My point, "News" is basically the blog of some reporter with about as much factual basis behind it. (See jason blair)
"That's only true if you're already familliar with office and not with OpenOffice....I personally find it frustrating and time consuming to get anything accomplished in Office XP or Office 2000.... "
I find this interesting. can you show me an open source equivalent to Access? one that doesn't crash all the time like Base. I guess you can use mysql, but do the following in Linux. Install a database system(mysql), make your database (easy), now make a custom GUI that connects to the DB, make reports, forms and queries. What are you going to use QT or GTK? assuming you know how to do the previous step, email the db and the gui to some one else. how long is that going to take you? how long is the recipient going to have to work to get the db to work (in access you just double click). Doing what i just described takes a few minutes in windows for a non technical user. If it is even possible in linux, i think it will take you much longer.
I am actually interested in knowing if this is possible in linux. Any takers?
this article pretty much demolishes your entire post. Relevant parts for those who don't want to bother clicking the link,
There are many special cases, as well, including those in recent years of armed militants who are deemed not to enjoy protection of the Geneva Convention on the grounds that they are not part of any country which is a treaty signator. These people need not be accorded lawful combatant status according to the laws of war.
It gets better though,
The term "unlawful combatant" has been around for at least 100 years and has been used in legal literature, military manuals and case law.
damn the truth hurts,
It was introduced into US domestic law in 1942 by a United States Supreme Court decision in the case ex parte Quirin. In this case, the Supreme Court upheld the jurisdiction of a U.S. military tribunal over the trial of several German saboteurs in the US.
I am open minded though, can you provide any links to back up your post. i am interested in hearing how president bush went back in time to 1942 and added the idea of unlawful combatants in the US legal system.
"The "unlawful combatant" bullshit is wholly invented by the Bush Administration."
um, no, get your facts straight, it was invented during WWII to handle germans landing in the US to sabotage the infrastructure. There is a lot of legal precident behind it. If you dont believe me, google the term. Point is, you hurt your argument by adding that line in there.
free wifi at starbucks? clearly you havent been to a starbucks lately. free wifi at a coffee shop, ok, but starbucks only has that stupid tmobile hostspot crap.
um no. we are talking about a corporation paying phds. now, if it were real workers, that would be a good thing. that money could be better spent raising the wages of low income workers or investing it in the community. instead of spending it on people doing tech research which really benefits the elite who use the internet, google's profits should be redistributed to unemployed. this would follow their motto of "do no evil" and would fit the global trends for the 21st century.
this is just more evidence of the corporate control of our lives in bush's america.
i guess the author probably meant to say realistic vs stylized.
and Red Sox won the world series, we know who deep throat is and Macs now run on intel processors..
great article. it shows just how aful/non standard mysql really is.

What if we had 100,000 more troops to ,...,prevent looting?
because that is illegal. the military can;t be used for domestic law enforcement. see the whole 9/11 able danger thing as an example.
hmm i thought i read this same comment posted some where else earlier today ;)

err, generally things are more expensive in Europe. Look at itunes music, cars, gas and practically anything else.
I've seen a lot of things on slashdot, but is this the first time a link to free serials has been posted on the front page?

"If I have a fresh Linux install vs. a fresh Windows install"
Clearly, you havent had a fresh RH installation to deal with. Trust me, its not pretty.
the obligatory reply submitter should have used coral cache (is it even possible here?)
ever heard of "they" replace he or she with they, it works nicely.
