  1. Reading off screen on Arizona School Won't Use Textbooks · · Score: 1

Maybe it's just me, but I find reading long articles off the screen cumbersome and inconvinient. I often print out anything longer than 3 pages, especially if it's something I really need to understand.

I would certainly hate it if all my (college) textbooks were pdfs and I had to pour over them off a monitor.

Maybe it's just habit or inertia, but I don't think I'd be able to study off a computer screen.

  2. Why the hate? on GMail Getting RSS Aggregation Feature? · · Score: 5, Insightful

I really don't understand why people are cribbing about /.'s coverage of Google. Google *is* one of the fastest innovating companies out there, coupled with being one whose products are widely used. They are a revolutionary company in many respects.

I *do* want to hear about the first email service to give me "unlimited" storage. I *do* want to hear about satellite images on maps (I need the landmarks. I'm horrible with directions :-P ). I *do* want to hear about uber-cool features such as Suggest (albeit not really useful, it's still fascinating for any web hacker).

Google, to me, is a company that is a break from the norm - both technologically and business-wise. It's refreshing and intruiging. And I'd like hear from someone who can argue (rationally) against the fact that they have had a huge impact on the WWW.

And he has a problem with that? I don't understand why he is "looking out" for MSFT. Wouldn't he *want* them to crash and burn?

The only reason I could think of is that since IE commands market share, IE standards are the de facto web standards.

    Thoughts?

  6. Is Joe Sixpack concerned? on India Quietly Introduces Software Patents · · Score: 1

When you really think about it, is the general American public that concerned? I mean, being part of the /. community one hears about it all the time, but mainstream press doesn't really cover IP and patent issues.

I don't think most people in most countries are really concerned with issues like that. It has nothing to do with a tsunami or earthquake. One didn't see a public outcry when the DMCA or INDUCE were brought to Congress. Sure, there were lobbyists and technocrats who were strongly against it, but it didn't make the evening news.

I am sure the case is the same in India, where the intellectual elite voice their protest and there is a slight chance that the government might take heed. But for the most part, the world over, these sorts of issues evoke respones from very small sections of society.

Open Source-onomics: Examining some pseudo-economic arguments about Open Source
It's quite old, but I think it's still relevant. It's the article that changed my opinions about the economics of Free/Open Source software.
The author deals with most of the common arguments against OSS/FS quite effectively. A must read for Bill Gates.

....it's not going to be easy to make them pay.

After years and years of being overcharged for CDs with 2 good songs, people found a way out. Now that the idea has settled in and gained (massive popularity) I seriously wonder if *any* form of paid p2p is going to work.

All they can do is make implementation more difficult - which will simply drive attention, coders and users to FreeNet type applications.

They've made their millions (billions?) ripping the consumers off, and I suppose it's payback time.

What brings so much humour into my life is how these "industry groups" seem to be like little 5 year olds - willing to talk about everything but the truth and adamantly sticking to their POVs. Music sales aren't down because of Kazaa - it's cuz I wanna buy the Matrix DVD instead of spending 15$ on a CD with two good songs.

I love their business model, though. Make crappy stuff and then blame everything but it's crappiness for the fact that it doesn't sell. Then sue everyone because they won't buy a crappy product.

    Who thinks these things up?!

  10. eVoting vs EVM on India Chooses All-Electronic Voting · · Score: 2, Interesting

Correct me if I am wrong, but the US is/was/will be debating eVoting i.e. voting over the internet. This is about India using EVMs - Electronic Voting Machines. They are machines on which you press a button and it records the vote. As was mentioned earlier, they are still taken to a central location and the votes tallied. There is no networking involved.

eVoting is quite different from EVMs, and I don't think the author made that difference in the article

  17. Parents? Computers? TV? Genes? on Violent Video Game Restriction Struck Down · · Score: 1

I agree. I think it is a combination of bad parenting along with video games/TV et al. I have a friend who is an obsessive gamer and is the king of CS on campus. But in "real" life, the guy wouldn't hurt a fly. I think that has a lot to do with the fact that his parents instilled a very strong sense of discipline in him.

OTOH, how many ppl who mug/murder etc play video games? How many of them had parents who never cared? Fathers never around?

I think the same can be said about porn. How many promiscuous people watch that stuff a lot?

Then of course, it may have a lot to do with genes. That stuff is still unconfirmed, but the more I read about it, the more I believe that the genetic makeup may be a major factor

As an Indian living in India, it comes as quite a surprise to me that you were told this. AFAIK, the only time mobile phones are used as an alternative is when:
    1. You set up a home/factory/school someplace where you can't get a landline. More often that not that's just temporary.
    2. It's more cost effective for your particular use.
I haven't seen or heard of anyone who uses mobile phones because the landlines are unreliable. Might be a rare few, but they are probably an anomaly.

Even though computers are supposed to be completely objective, one has to realize that real life isn't. That is the problem with AI. Intelligence isn't always objective, but AI almost always is.
