I've been there... It's just North of BFE, and a little west of the Middle of Nowhere.
Seriously, though. There is currently an attempt to make a world court that would override the jurisdiction of any other country -- The US is opposing this, but the UN claims to only need 60 countries to sign on to affect the others.
I'm really starting to think the Westphalian order is the way to go.
The other benefit of having a base on the far side of the moon as compared to free fall is that dust will eventually settle, as opposed to free fall where it drifts in the orbit for very long periods of time.
The big downside is the enormous distance from here to the moon as compared to where the hubble telescope is. 384000 kilometers as compared to 590 km to the HST. Just a bit more of a haul to get there.
Also, there's the big issue of landing things on the moon, as opposed to throwing them into orbit... you can always realign an orbit missed by a few meters...
Since the power lines are going to work with some kind of modulation, wouldn't it be at least physically possible to have a box that hangs on the power line, converts the modulations into proper 802.11, and transmit? Almost seems like it could be done with little/no processing power...
To fit the PC into the monitor case, and a flatscreen into the desktop case... Then you could really freakout coworkers when they see you sticking a cd into your "monitor."
Fine, they get money to do research, but if a company doesn't make money from a drug, they aren't going to produce it, or even want to start research in that are.
And like I said, if a government wants to fund the research efforts entirely, go for it. And whenever a company and the government fund university research, there are agreements before they start saying what pantents will belong to whom.
So there's this story about the hen that laid golden eggs...
It seems that the farmer that owned it wanted the eggs NOW. The eggs were coming way to slow. He just couldn't wait.
The farmer decided that he could probably get a hold of a couple of eggs inside the hen if he killed it. So he did. And just for the argument, let's say he found two more eggs.
Now, why in the hell would any more golden-egg laying hens come to that farmer?
In the same light, why in the hell would I spend millions to make a cure just so somebody could come and take it from me. If Brazil wanted to do it right, let them fund the entire research effort, and then let them do whatever they feel like with the drug.
Not necessarily. Even though we both know that this clone is at most useless,I would say that the clone could be made within a year of birth and still be just as worthless. Then you would know which was the clone, and label them as such, and just know that this kid was a spare. Now, all that's important is to feed and clothe him, no need to be nice -- no need to worry about emotional damage, it's the parts that matter,
And of course, you would never give him the parts from the original.
And a lot of good that would do. Your clone would have your same genetic makeup, so unless you needed the organ due to an accident or some illness that only you caught (and not your clone), then I'd say it would be pretty worthless to have a spare.
1) I agree the U.S. makes the most pollution. The U.S. is also responsible for the most manufacture with the highest worker efficiency.
If you think this is bad, then make that argument. I might be willing to go along with you in that the technological advances are not helping/ not good / too fast.
2. Everyone I know would agree that Waterworld was a bad movie, and having to live in it would be worse. However, why is it that we have very little conclusive data that says that we're warmer today than it was in say, 1050 AD, and so many people are willing to destroy an economy for it?
If you want to see people care about the environment, make sure they have money and can feed their kids. People without means care a lot less about the tree they are about to cut down so they won't be cold.
Now, if you don't like the way things are going, well, the it sucks for you. Until it's illegal to spend money on things that I want, I'll do it, much like people can do most immoral acts they want as well.
(And let me qualify this before I'm labeled some type of zealot: I really like doing "immoral" acts. I'm just pointing out that often the same groups that say people should not be able to buy SUVs also support very radical sexual/religious/drug points of view, and this inconsistency bothers me).
I want to know about Artist's Concepts.

Completely off topic, but exactly where do they find these artists with concepts? Every scientific paper dealing with subatomic physics or astronomy has some "artist's concept" picture in it.
Now, I know several artists, and I wouldn't trust them with anything even remotely scientific. So, is there a "scientific art" major in college that I don't know about? Or does NASA and the like have some artist on payroll who attends all the meetings and then just draws what he's thinking about?
Stem cell research finds a cure for 20 different disease/afflictions.
Now what happens if it is the case that only embryonic(sp) stem cells can be used for these cures? Do we start paying women to make embryos to use as cures? Do we start requiring or at least expecting women to do this when possible?
And would there be money to find an easier cure if there are these available sources?
Does anybody have a problem using the pre-born to extend the lives of the elderly?
On a side note to this, about a year ago publishers started introducing licensed textbooks. They're on CDROM and you have unlimited use of them for 3 years (they were dental school texts).
After that, you had to pay to keep them "current". Not very nice to doctor types who kinda like having lots of resources. It's just the companies realized a better way to make money on books people didn't want to bother buying.
U.S. Attorney Robert J. Cleary has told the court that the surveillance device is a "highly sensitive law enforcement search and seizure technique" and should not be made public.
Well, my recent attempts at math haven't proved too good, but let's see if I can take a shot at your odds:
617 digits, and with the assumption that the factors are comparable length means they are in the 300 digit area. Which means that you could guess one with about a 1 in 10^300 chance.
In lotto terms, you are about 10^294 times more likely to win guessing lottery numbers than trying to guess here. However, the guesses here are free, so you're price/probability of winning ratio is infinite.
You're right of course. Not all Americans are white. Not all programmers are white. Not all places in Africa are bad, and not all coders that go there are stupid.
However, in extremely simplistic generalities, most CS and tech majors are white, most Americans are white , and I am personally under the belief that the majority of coders that go to Africa would have to be extremely self-sacrificing (which, in a cynical view, is stupid.).
I'm absolutely positive that a bunch of white Americans would never be used as targets for any group of dissidents. I'm also sure that the
stable governments in Africa could easily defend those high tech people from any kidnapping groups.
Also, from what I hear, the weather is wonderful, the people are all friendly, the help shit diamonds
Scenario 1: The FDA quickly approves all drugs given to it by the benficial health companies who only want to do good.
or
Scenario 2: The FDA "drags its heels" and makes sure that all drugs that are approved not only cause no harm, but actually are beneficial.
Yes, in both cases, mistakes are made. However, there is a reason that the approval by the FDA is a coveted achievement.
Sure, we hear all the time, "they've had this drug in Europe for years." However, how often do we hear about the drugs they have that people use with absolutely no benefit whatsoever? Who exactly gave us reflexology?
I'll tell you the best of both worlds. Let the drug companies still get approval by the FDA, but allow them to market any drug that hasn't gotten approval. Then only allow suits against the doctors who prescribe these medications and kill their patients.
It's one thing for us to sit here and say how great civil disobediance is. However, being able to get up every morning and not be here , holds a certain value to me.
And I'm beginning to be convinced that sites like this will be invaluable in the future. I am definately beginning to believe circumventing the law, or just quietly breaking it, are the ways to go.

I've got a bizarre question...
Since the power lines are going to work with some kind of modulation, wouldn't it be at least physically possible to have a box that hangs on the power line, converts the modulations into proper 802.11, and transmit? Almost seems like it could be done with little/no processing power...

At 5:15 AM.
In the morning.
From my mother.
She had just seen the FBI guy on TV and was worried her windows 98 machine would destroy the world over her dialp connection.
I informed her that this was unlikely, and went back to bed.
Could it be this?
Or how about this?
I'm pretty sure there was a piece of hardware as well...
