I remember the 3.1 days, boy did WFW 3.11 bring in some major improvements.
Win3.1 was NOT that bad, if you knew what you were doing it was actually quite stable. Had to know the Win.ini, System.ini, Autoexec.bat and Config.Sys pretty well, but if you did it was a very usable OS. And it actually had a Win32 api that you could install and run a few Windows 95 apps.
> The point is that Apple did a nice economy of scale with relying on a nice kernel that they don't have to maintain or pay!
Ohh I really hate nitpicking, but I just want to point out that OSX uses FreeBSD userland, not kernel. They actually used the NextStep Kernel developed by NeXT.
You do however make a lot of good points about the structure of Linux and what holds Microsoft back.
I'm had multiple copies of Win98 from different vendors, all OEM. Not sure which one did this, but I should have mentioned that this did NOT happen on ALL Win 98's. Hell it was so long ago I can't remember if it was 98 or 98SE. But nevertheless my recollections of the bitch it was to force MSN to leave me alone when trying to run IE was correct!
There is an easier way!? A way that doesn't require too many changes on the client end and gives administrators control over what patches get installed.
** OT ** I Swear, if someone asks me what I am talkin about!?!?!
Actually I had the OEM version and it wasn't just "like cancel" or choosing "I will configure my internet myself".
It took a lot more fucking around than that. I had to properties the Internet Connection Wizard and take off a/msn-somethingoranother switch off, and re-run it. And that was actually a lucky guess!
Without that, the Internet Connection Wizard would keep popping up whenever I clicked on Internet Explorer and try to force me to register with MSN. Regardless of the fact that I was on an ethernet lan with an IP already retrieved from DHCP!!!
This was by no means an easy thing to figure out. I mean it wasn't rocket science, but I could wager that most users wouldn't have been able to figure that out. I mean now that I know, it would take an extra second, but at the time it was surely an ordeal!
I don't know too many toddlers that need driving directions!
Let's assume he meant his driving life, being 16 in '96 would make him about 23 now. Now considering he said most of his life, let's make him 18 in '96, that would make him around 25. Not too old, but not a 13/14 year old.
turning off OpenSSH does not cause the entire system to stop working properly. RPC on Windows does.
There is no real way to compare apples to apples. I can disable anything on my Linux box that I don't need and have it boot up and work as before (minus the disabled service). I can't expect the same of Windows.
Cuz us techs don't get paid overtime. If any other non-salaried employee was asked to stay till everyone left to get an important part of their work done it would be a big deal.
Screw that, I'm all for getting work done during work hours.
> I'm not the one who asked this AskSlashdot question. I was replyin' to RevAaron as to why most people don't use.MOV.
This was what I did, answer a question for RevAaron.
I wasn't participating with a general discussion about much else, but you damn AC's keep bringing me in! Like I said, I don't care. AVI works for me, Quicktime sucks for me. It a naggy piece of shit!
Microsoft managed to do it. The protocol is called pptp and does just that. I know this is off topic, just wanted to point out that ppp over ip is totally doable.
Why bother, I can do what I want in AVI. I'm not the one who asked this AskSlashdot question. I was replyin' to RevAaron as to why most people don't use.MOV.
The player sucks, not many tools for.MOV unless your on a Mac. Why would it catch on...
Like I'm gonna sit down and waste my time writing a better Quicktime player because a lame AC told me to....
VirtualDub and TMPGenc can do some amazing things with very little knowledge. I'll stick with good ol' AVI/MPG.
AT&T just announced that it was going all VoIP not too far back. If our voice traffic is going to save them money, and they're still gonna charge me the same...then fuck that. I'll just save myself money and go VoIP.
.MOV sounds like a spectacular container for video and audio, however all the problems are in the Quicktime Player. Let's face it, it just sucks. Video doesn't always appear when it should, scanning through videos takes forever, and it's got nagware. The need to use QT Player, in plugin form or otherwise, is what keeps this shit from spreading.
Yeah, aside from press releases....Try to find something useful that runs on x86_64 hardware. Aside from RH Beta, Gentoo, & SuSE, there isn't much out there for these opterons. Good thing they perform damn well in 32 bit.
> AVI doesn't support VBR audio. AVI doesn't support seeking within the file well. AVI is bloated. AVI isn't very extensible. AVI isn't fault tolerant. AVI doesn't support very large files.

shopper == person purchasing, not selling.
You'd have to be a pretty stupid shopper to buy a 300 dollar pc for 5.3 million!
No, but you prove yourself to be a very stupid shopper!

Wrong discussion, but right thread.
.MOV.

ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/x86_64
That is the correct URL

Sounds like everything else Microsoft put out!
I understand it was a joke, just wanted to point out that most isp's don't allow modems under 9600 bps to establish a ppp connection.
420 Megs of porn? Good lord, you must not have broadband!!!!
One of the worst things you could do is use a hub on a switched network. Nothin but headaches if you ask me.
trust me, NASA doesn't know that much about keeping a Linux box going....
You must have opted to take the "blue pill!"
