Sorry to hear that but it's not a universal problem - I've had no issues with Gmail and the only time that there was an outage that was long enough for me to notice was over 2 years ago.

All in all, their free service has been an order of magnitude better than the various Exchange environments I've been in ( including BP ( 2 years ago, HP ( currently) and several medium sized ISPs) in terms of both service speed / reliability, mailbox size, searching and spam filtering / virus scanning.
Of course, Google doesn't yet measure up with respect to the groupware or application integration features - and probably never will.

I have nothing bad to say about Yahoo mail - haven't really used them in years but Hotmail's pathetic spam filtering keeps me so busy cleaning up the mailbox that I rarely have time to read my messages.

It's worked out pretty well for them up to now.

The difference I see is that employees don't write the terms and conditions of their employment so passing along your knowlegde may be implied.
However, if documentation / knowlegde transfer wasn't specified in your job description / terms of employment, you might get away with it. It won't make you popular, though and may be an unwise move in certain industries or employment circles.

On the other hand, employers aren't saints either and, particularly in tough times, can be quick to hire or keep the monkey who'll work for the least bananas simply because they can tell him or her to just follow the documents.
In that case, you've documented yourself into unemployment.

I must say that either you're very naive or have been very fortunate in the places you've work or are the boss - having been through 3 or 4 recessions / downturns in 2 major cities in my working life, I have to tell you that many people only manage to keep their jobs based on who they know or who they blow.
