  1. Meaning that - even with the Government-mandated funds transfers from other car companies to Tesla, and the subsidies to Tesla, and the big buyer's subsidies from the Government - they still lose money

"Government-mandated funds transfers from other car companies to Tesla" - ZEV credits? That's not all that much money compared to their sales and Tesla gets ~50 cents on the dollar for those. Also, automakers can easily dodge those with compliance cars - I think.

"and the subsidies to Tesla" - which ones? The $5000 credit Fed credit? That's a tax credit to the buyer not to Tesla

  2. profit? yes from the subsidies payed by taxpayers and flogging off carbon vouchers.

ho, you meant profit from actual sales of cars, nope not a fucking hope.

The subsidies are paid to the buyers, not to Tesla so that's out.
The carbon vouchers / ZEV credits help but not as much as one would think. Tesla isn't able to see them for full market value and the total ZEV sales are much smaller than the overall gross margin on the cars.

  3. "Only Ford was healthy enough and managed well enough to not require any government bail outs"
It's been a long time since Ford could make everything they needed for their cars.
Despite their relatively healthy status compared to the other automakers, they supported the call for the industry to be saved since the collapse of the competition would have devastated their own supply chain.
So one way or another, they too got a bailout and would have been devastated without one.
Ford also accepted $6 billion in super-low interest loans for plant retooling of which they have yet to pay any back.
They also borrowed almost $24 billion but most of that has been repaid. I guarantee that neither you nor I could get the kinds of interest rates they received.

Are they yet making a profit on each sold?

Very likely but how much is uncertain and their infrastructure spending on growth means they'll bleed quite a bit of red ink for a few years yet.
But they do need to get that under control, especially by improving the build quality and making cars that are easier to assemble & repair.

  6. The article I r ead was highly nuanced. It didn't say not to call a lie when its clearly a lie, but its more likely that because much of what Trump may say is not in fact intended to be a lie, that saying its a lie is hyperbolic. Better to expose the inaccuracy of something said, rather than attack the messenger.

At least that's what I took from it.

"I don't do nuance" - George W. Bush, and neither does a lot of the rightwing when they're hating on Clinton & Obama. I think the mainstream left is not so partisan but I could be wrong.

I deleted Vista after 3 weeks and went back to XP & Linux. But I've been happy with Win7 since before the official release while Win 8.x & 10 are painfully frustrating to use.

  10. While this is ultimately an economic decision (small car sales are waaaay down and Ford doesn't need another factory), I can't imagine the threat of tariffs didn't factor into the decision to cancel the Mexican factory. Nevertheless, it's amazing how the online comments sections are taking a black vs.white/pro vs. anti-Trump side to a nuanced subject.

Ultimately, this is good news for Michigan workers, whether or not we bring politics into the discussion.

Politics has long been a part of every economic discussion, especially where foreign vs domestic jobs are concerned.
But Obama did a lot more for the auto industry & Michigan, but it'll make scant difference to his legacy.

My biggest complaint is that security updates are now bungled with UI or functionality changes. I don't mean functionality additions, I mean where the way something behaves from the user point of view, a behavior that had no fault in it, is rewritten an the previous way is removed entirely, or where arbitrary changes are made solely for change's sake in order to attempt to demonstrate the newness of the new version

That's a pet peeve of mine. Some improvements in UI are welcome but some are just showy and otherwise pointless.
