Along your line of thought, I was in ROTC in the early nineties when the military started downsizing from our Cold War mentality. Our officers started to instruct us on the new privatization measures being adopted to rely on civilian contractors rather than soldiers.

It wasn't until the last few years that I understood why this was happening. All of those Cold War contractors saw their sugar daddy drying up and concocted the insane "Milton Friedman-esque" idea that they could sell privatization to recoup their losses. Now, we're paying truck drivers $100K+ a year to do what Privates used to do less the force readiness and commitment.

Just a correction to this widespread misconception that the Steroids hearings were a waste of time. I actually *watched* them. It was predominantly about the insidious problem of steroids and the way they're creeping into athletic culture even down to the high school level. Congress wanted more public attention on the problem and better data from the scientific community in order to design legislation to confront the problem.

Grilling pro athletes was supposed to pique our interest enough to follow the debate, but people didn't look much further than "Roger Clemens".

A few bullets nailed the issue from my perspective:
    • On possible parallels between the music and game industry: Getting into IT is expensive. You practically need access to hardware which throws up an economic barrier.
    • On stereotypes in games: Should be pretty obvious to everyone. The Black character is usually the guy lugging around the heavy machine gun or rocket launcher.
    • On teaching kids a path into the game industry: This is the most interesting point and why I almost didn't get into IT. I programmed for fun on C64s and Amiga 500s as a kid and it never occurred to my parents or me that you could make a career out of it. I came full circle back to IT after testing the waters in other fields.
    • On gender issues vs. race issues in the game industry: I've literally had White Americans laugh in disbelief when I told them what I did for a living. I've heard coworkers dropping N-bombs and making racist comments when they didn't know I was within earshot.

Also, I think there's an osmosis issue. Women are just now fronting their first legitimate Presidential candidate 80 years after getting the vote. It takes time for people to push through barriers and trickle into career fields they previously had no access to.

  7. Re:Why do we keep making race an issue? on African Americans and the Video Game Industry · · Score: 1

The only reason race keeps coming up as an issue in the US is because PEOPLE KEEP BRINGING IT UP.

Ah, the Bill O'Reilly "I'm color-blind!" argument. Too bad that your theory doesn't hold water. The fact is we all live in a racist society and there's plenty of empirical evidence to prove it e.g. in the current home mortgage crisis a Black American was far more likely to get a worse loan package (points, ARMs, percentage) even with the exact same credit as a White American. I'm not saying that race is a catch-all excuse for underachieving, but pretending that it's not an issue when you KNOW that's not true is the reason race relations have stagnated for the last 30 years.

Because lobbying short circuits the process. If a bunch of citizens want to change laws to the disadvantage of Corporation America, we'd each commit a few hours a week to our cause. Meanwhile, the corporation has people on staff full-time and cash on hand to "invest" in the legislation it needs.

So, the entire theory of how our government should function is practically blown out of the water. The obvious solution is lobbying reform, but the same problem above keeps that from happening. That and a sizable portion of our population think that money equals free speech.

Some insider suspicions are that she's actually trying to kill Obama's chances in the general election to get another shot at the job in 2012 (indicated by her fawning over McCain's experience and Obama's lack thereof). Other than that, this mobilization in many new states normally neglected by early nominations will strengthen the party. And, I don't think this election will be close; I'm talking a +20% lead in the general by the Dem (you know who).

This is precisely my conclusion after I started working in a corporate IT environment. That's the theory. The practice is that your marketroids/bureaucracy create a buffer between the craftsman and the consumer. They then quickly realize that they can use that buffer as an information wall. All of a sudden, you have very little knowledge about the details of contracts with your consumers. The marketroids then start siphoning off the money for themselves or whatever uses they see fit. Soon, you end up with a front office composed entirely of obscenely-paid people moving up within the bureaucracy while the craftsmen are treated as an autonomous "labor box."

If the trend continues, the company's leadership becomes so disassociated from its product and market, then it starts to rot from the top down. Not to say that everyone in that sphere works the same way, but I've seen the pattern repeat itself frequently.

I too was really disappointed that sen. Obama didn't take the opportunity to say on the record that racism is racism and that black people shouldn't behave in a racist manner either. Just seems to me to be common sense, as well as common courtesy. Race relations are largely a mess because of the differing standards that come into play. As well as the willingness to not play well with other minority groups.

Did you read the speech? The whole point was that people have reasons for their flawed beliefs, and we should empathize with what the origins are, but he in no way endorsed them. I think a lot of people haven't gone any further into this subject than "Wright is Barack's pastor" and a few 10 second YouTube.com clips. As for standards, they're different because people in this country have historically been treated differently. I think the speech was historic in that it spoke at an adult level. Now, if you chose to evaluate his words at the same old bumper-sticker level, then that's your fault.

That's obviously a very small minority opinion. Resume bullets are only a small part of the job interview. Remember, GWB had great resume bullets as well.
