  1. Re:Careful engineering on Genetically Engineered "Smart" Mice · · Score: 1

It's also worth mentioning that the artistic didn't appear until about the same time. Homo Sapiens for most of our history weren't that artistic. Once we started moving into europe, from africa (as the prevailing theory believes we did), cave paintings first started to appear.

I don't agree with this point. You seem to be saying that the ability of artistry came to exist when cave paintings came to exist. Cave paintings are the oldest evidence of artistry. Cave paintings aren't artistry, they are expressions of artistry.

Keep in mind that in order for us to measure the ability you refer to as "artistry", it has to be expressed through some form (in this case, through cave paintings). The invention of cave painting didn't necessarily mark the beginning of artistry; it simply was the first form of expression that preserved well enough for us to discover and measure it much later.

I believe that there is a good chance that other forms of artistic expression, like maybe dancing and singing (or maybe just humming :), existed before cave painting did. Furthermore, I believe that the ability of artistry existed even before they did.

If I'm right, microwaves, since they are a form of electromagnetic radiation (EMR), travel at the speed of light (through air), c. Thus, to find the wavelength, you just take the velocity and divide by frequency (c/f). My point is that the frequency DOES tell you the wavelength.

The information I present here is all second-hand.

I heard that 2.4 GHz is the resonance frequency for water (what *exactly* that means, I don't know). I also heard that this is why microwaves operate at 2.4 GHz (food is usually made up of a decent amount of water); they cause the water to resonate in order to heat up it and whatever contains it.

In essence, these high frequency radio waves may be literally cooking you. Am I the only one bothered by this?

By this reasoning, The results of the mentioned rat and mice experiment may be valid to humans, but not because of the DNA similarities. It may simply be because rats, mice, and humans all have water in their brains.

Of course a 150mW wireless phone probably doesn't have the brain cooking power of a 600W microwave, so they probably aren't so much a threat. What worries me are the huge broadcast antennas that are set up to support these wireless networks.

IANAIP (IANA Informed Person), so feel free to correct me :)

Imagine this: suppose one day some scientists came along, knocked you out, and then removed your brain. Then when you woke up, your brain was hooked up to a small, wheeled robot, and they sat around and observed how it reacted to a light source.

    I think that would suck!

Actually, I was going to make a serious point about what the experiment would be like from your point of view, but I think I screwed up the opportunity :)

If you want to see how the author did it (to see if its CGI or whatever), then go here:

    http://hobbiton.org/~zk65/

There is a tar-zipped file there (which I haven't checked out) containing a do-it-yourself kit for ruinning Slashdot discussions.

The author was also kind enough to leave an e-mail address, so you can express how much you love this piece of work (heh).

  7. Re:Cool on id Software Announces Development Of Doom III · · Score: 1

I thought that Doom (and other 2D FPS, like Duke 3D and Hexen) had a better atmosphere, too. In fact I believe the reason that it had a better atmosphere is because of a graphics limitation of the newer, polygonal FPS.

Do you remember in Doom all of the little bitmap objects that you ran across in the game that didn't have anything to do with the game itself, but that were part of the location you were in? There were things like the impaled marines, torches, candles, extraneous body parts, trees, bones, corpses, statues and etc. In Doom, you could fill a scene with little stuff like that without slowing the game down too much, but in Quake objects like these might added a non-trivial number of polygons to a scene, which hurt performance.

I'll admit that there are scenes in the newer games which have these little objects, but usually you won't find a scene with more than two or three of them. The end result for the polygonal FPS is a bunch of map locations with a bit of an empty feel to them.

Of course, Doom had other factors going for it. It had a coherent story line and a cool enemy (the Legions of Hell), which allowed for a lot of atmospheric creativity.
