    Ok...

so if Mars is so fscking close (2400 miles, someone posted) then why does it take months for a craft to get there. I realize that its not quite a straight shot, but heres the thought.

I drive from Houston, TX to Appleton, WI and its 1,297 miles. that trip takes rougly 20hrs. Given that I'm only driving 70mph (roughly).

These spacecraft are travelling much faster than I am, but lets be cynical and say that they travel at 100mph. It should only take 24hrs to complete the entire trip. Lets add in a couple of extra hundred miles for course corrections, and say 3000mi.

So why does it take months to get a craft over there. How slow are they really moving, and why aren't we taking more advantage of frictionless atmosphere.

By the end of the week, I had 4 p2/333 with 128mb each. I brought in a 10/100 switch (5port) and started cranking away at installing openmosix.

Before I knew it, I had Samba installed, MRTG, and was sniffing anything that came accross the network. A few weeks into, after compressing all my CDs (And a few others) using the openmosix cluster, someone asked me if they could install some software for testing, before you know it (right now in fact) I'm lead tech in a project to bring linux file servers to our clients instead of pushing the Win2k3 servers. Samba is working great as a replacement for the Win2k/2k3 servers that are in our market place.

I can't wait for the trial to come about. I'm curious to a couple of things:

    1. What will it do to the current prices of both the IBM and SCO stock?

    2. Assuming that SCO does win, what would be a guestimate time frame to correct the Linux kernel. Are we looking at a kernel freeze so that just these corrections could be made? Is it serious enough to warrant that?

I am not referencing IBM, I know that they've got to keep quite until their day in court. But aside from the random ranting, I haven't read very much about Linux standing up against SCO. Understandably, there is little to defend, since SCO has been too vague.

  7. Linux 2.4 on SCO Extorting Unixware Licenses to Linux Users? · · Score: 1

As someone stated in an earlier thread, the case is against the code contributions that IBM made to Linux that have been contributed to the Linux 2.4.x kernel tree. While I can see the forward problems that this possibly might have, and assuming that SCO actually wins, it should be as simple as yanking the code from the Linux 2.6 kernel tree, and rewriting it. Additionally, from what I've read about the claims from SCO, it primarily discusses SMP. Assuming that you're server isn't compiled with SMP turned on (only one of mine are) then you are not using any code with they say belong to them.

I seem to recall another note regarding code contributions to JFS, and while I'm sure that the IBM JFS is very well designed, I am instead using SGI Journalling XFS and ResierFS in my boxen.

SCO is purely in it for the money at this point, which is very apparent from yesterday's (and prior days) stock jumps.

I can't blame them either, I have now bought some of the stock and will ride it out, it'll help me buy my plasma screen by the time this is all over!

    a. If they win, they're set for some serious time to come, they can claim all kinds of proprietary rights and live off licensing - or be bought out by a larger corporation, ala IBM.
