"It's better in the long term for the country to have rational debate at election time. "
We never had that, and don't have rational voters. Most Americans are ignorant, superstitious fools who get what they deserve every election day.
It is better that the smarter folks exploit the system and rule the mass of cattle. Unfortunately, the "smarter folks" tend to be from one side of the house while the chumps who choose to lose are from the other. ALL sides need to discover the benefits of waging politics as war, of total ruthlessness, and regarding their opponents as enemies while not admitting that if it isn't convenient.
The US is composed of bitter competitors, enemies scrambling for power necessary to get resources, and the pretence that we have anything in common is a lie.
Politics is war, there is no moral obligation to a political enemy, this is not a disagreement between friends.
The inability of Democrats to play throat-punch politics is not an asset unless you like to lose.
The US needs a counterweight to the Republican Party, so grow some fucking nuts and play hardball. Collective skirt-gathering and feeble attempts to co-opt some of your enemies agenda just got the shit kicked out of your party in the recent election, including the destruction of most of the last Southern Democrats. Sack up and fight.
Let's not forget that China now is still, literally, paradise for the workers compared to ANY time in the past couple of hundred years or better. In 1948, China was a smoking ruin.
It's not suburban America or Europe, but the progress rate is tremendous.
As we have seen in other countries where democracy is inappropriate to the local culture (Iraq, Afghanistan), attempts to make "them" like "us" are destabilizing disasters. China is prospering in its own way, and a few casualties are the normal cost of industrial progress.
"So, what you are saying is: The more you tighten your censorship, Amazon, the more customers will slip through your fingers? I hope you are correct!"
Screw this "customer" nonsense. Download everything from the usual sources or route around them if they are interrupted.
People who actually pay for most content are suckers. Since big business is malicious, one has no moral obligation to it and can cheerfully do whatever one can get away with to deny it money.
"Better yet, stay in your room if you're not getting anything from the lecture. You'll be doing us all a favor."
Get rid of most lectures and group gatherings. Pass out assignments online, don't grade the results, and make the entire grade based on a long, demanding closed-book test. Traditional college methods may not be necessary any more, or necessary for many courses which are just "filler" for most students who are there for the diploma and nothing else.
Students who want disciplined training and actual challenge can vote with their wallets and attend appropriate "vendors" who can exclude the trash.
I work at a community college, and IMO a majority of the students aren't there to learn anything.
The challenge is to help the motivated few while minimizing the damage the mass of undisciplined morons do to the learning experience. There being no discipline options except for the most disruptive students, and it being necessary to keep paying customers (the many pay for the motivated few and keep the system going), any option that lets motivated students avoid being dragged down by the worthless is worth a look.
Western powers have no business imposing UN/colonial rule in their old African colonies. Freedom means nothing if someone else hands it to you.
If Africans want to be free, they must kill their homegrown tyrants. Mugabe has plenty of supporters who differ with your description of their country.
That means AFRICANS choose Mugabe, just as Iraqis CHOSE Saddam. Intervening in Iraq was a disaster we don't need to repeat elsewhere.
All those things are trifles, supporting my view that the disclosures may have been plants, salted with enough mediagenic items to give them credence.
In large conflicts like the new Cold War, mass murders might be interesting, but corruption (the way the rest of the world out side EUSia does and always will do business) and ordinary secret operations are boring except to the "professionally overwrought". Yemen is in play, is in a strategic location (geography STILL matters!), so it makes sense to seek advantage there.
There are no "good guys" in the world, merely "guys one prefers", and the childish desire for "good" instead of advantage merely cedes the field to people who are smarter than that. For example, supporting "human rights" in the Middle East, Asia, or Africa would be as useless as trying to support atheism in Mecca. Grownups won't even bother except as a tool against opposing regimes.
Not necessarily. Warm restart isn't cold start, and engines take a long time to cool down. They won't shed much heat at stoplights.
The solution to any potential problem is an EASY retrofit. A hydraulic accumulator can store oil pressure and be emptied to pressurize the lubrication system when the ignition key is turned.
"I don't care. Life is better with data. I would actually pay for a phone that records my heartbeat and location and communicates it to a trusted 3rd party. You know what, it might save my life."
Crowdsource that monitoring function to 4chan for redundant backup.
Pure clean ethanol in a race car whose fuel won't be in the tank more than a few hours and whose engine will be rebuilt after only a few actual hours of running (or a few minutes in the case of some drag race engines!) doesn't compare to use over time in a street engine.
Alcohol is a poor lubricant, stores badly because is draws moisture (which is why modern "gasoline" turns to varnishy goo in small engines) from the atmosphere, and doesn't run well at very cold temperatures. I'm a mechanic and loathe the stuff as fuel. It does tolerate high compression ratios and burns cool, but that mainly matters for racing.
"Alright, who's in charge of deciding who gets to live and who gets to die? "
Those who win the struggle. Competition is how evolution works. It kills the failures.
We may try to soften those rules, but that (it bears reminding) is recent popular fashion and in no way a necessity. If you want to give Sally Struthers your money to feed and breed the hordes of the Third World though, have at it.
Pollution shift allows pollution control and avoids depending on the owners of autos to maintain them. Central powerplant upgrades cost less than dispersed vehicle fleet replacement.
"Smaller (lighter) cars are the only solution."
Their is no "only solution", there are a vast number of partial, complementary solutions. The "central solution" idea is both stupid and a distraction from intelligent comprehension of the systems that need changing.
"I personally never saw the point. My own computers always have the cheapest case I can get, so I can spend the savings on better bits to go inside the case."
Mmm. Enlight flashbacks from 1989!
I fondly remember bleeding from the sharp sheet metal until I got smart and deburred 'em with a file tang.

"Is it really necessary for everybody to talk like complete dicks nowadays?"
No, just those whose audience consider it appropriate.

"Didn't the Nazis leave behind a bunch of drinking songs?"
The Allies spent vast amounts of treasure and millions of troops to ensure no one in Europe would resist corporate serfdom. Don't make us do it again.
Oil being a fungible commodity, buying it from our Northern overlords still affects global prices thus enriching our raghead frenemies.

Those specs would make a Very Nice thin client, LTSP-style. A quick glance at Newegg indicates thin clients are still overpriced.

We'll call that comment the "Marie Antoinette response".
"I keep seeing these stories about how some poor sod is able to light his house with HE solar lights. But that is kind of trivial."
Really? Turn off all your lights and leave them that way as an experiment.
Google "bugmenot nyt".
Then their competitors will leave the unlocking "easter egg" to gain sales and win anyway.
"Limited" "protection" has its advantages, like the favorable publicity it creates through stories on /. :)

You can edit EXIF data too, which opens up some interesting possibilities...

Ethanol fuels don't store well, as any mechanic who has dealt with them will attest. Their lubricity is poor.
Of course, you can dump STA-BIL in the tank (ignore the directions, use a shitload), but that kind of defeats the purpose.
"Drop-in" petroleum replacements are a better solution deserving further development, and can be run in compression-ignition diesels.

Lack of pics? (runs)
The emulation of the railroads in being granted huge rights-of-way would have been extremely lucrative and in the robber baron tradition.
Such folk built vital infrastructure we would not otherwise have, but lack of water will be a useful constraint on growth.
We don't need growth everywhere.
