  1. Not quite. on Cringley: Apple using Open Source to get Microsoft · · Score: 1

As someone else mentioned, "OS 9" is trademarked. Hence the jump to the name "OS X".

Also, bringing up the Apache bug is moot. It wasn't a "few" CGI scripts that was hard locking the server, as I recall, and I've seen a couple of reports *on here*, among other places, saying that people couldn't recreate it.

In any case, when did "Apache" become a buzzword? Last time I checked, it was just a web server. God forbid Apple should bundle a piece of software most web folk use.

I think it speaks to the power of open source software that this was caught

Dare I dispute the Awesome Magical Force of OSS and ask how OSS had anything to do with the catching of this worm?

The virus is a Macintosh virus; it was detected by Macintosh virus detectors. Last time I checked, none of them were in any sort of open-source licensing agreement. I'm sure the people who caught it were using one of the numerous AppleScripts I've seen, or a freeware app, or maybe even something commercial like Virex. But again, not open source stuff AFAIK.

OSS really has nothing to do with this, guys. I like OSS as much as the next guy, but just because someone caught a Mac virus on a Mac Linux distribution CD doesn't mean we should (as we always seem to do) go running in the streets shouting the praises of OSS.

But what do I know, I'm just a Mac user.

  4. The hell it does... on Apple Sale Rumors · · Score: 1

Ultimately this merger has to take place. There is nowhere else for the company to go, with Microsoft owning most of the market, that is the lesson of almost two decades.

I'm sorry, I really don't the logic in this. So Microsoft has 90-something percent of the OS market share - good for them. Does that mean that instantly, every other company that makes an OS needs to sell to some other, larger company?

By your logic, most Linux distributions will now have to be sold off to some other computer company; Be Inc. will get sold to who, Adobe?; god forbid the old commercial Unix variants and any other alternate OSes out there (Where will Amiga go?).

Your argument sounds similar to what Microsoft said to IBM: Where else are you going to go? We're the only place in town. The fact is, no company has to or should sell out in light of this "owning of the market". Hell, if everyone STARTS selling out, then we WILL all end up under Microshaft. And what good is that?

This merger does not have to take place. Financially, Apple is standing well enough on their feet these days. Their stock is higher than AMD, 3DFX, Dell, Compaq, and is just slightly below Intel and Gateway. And I don't see anyone telling Compaq to sell off to another company.

You may recall that a few years back, Nintendo released a device called the Super Game Boy. This plugged into your SNES and emulated a Gameboy. It was a hardware/software program that is/was designed to allow game play on a platform that it was not created for.

I'm sure many of you are confused over this like I am - is Nintendo really selling an illegal product? I recommend you write to them at noalegal@noa.nintendo.com if you are as confused as I. ;)

  7. A New Form of Racism on More Stories From The Hellmouth · · Score: 1

40 years ago, racism was starting to become a big problem in America's public schools. From what I've read, there was plenty of violence, half-assed attempts to fix the problems, and in the end...well, racism is still in the school system today, although to a lesser extent. Back when I was in high school (a few years ago), I saw some Neo-KKK guy start a fight with a kid whose skin tone the KKK guy obviously didn't like.

But what's happening now that's so different than the racism of old? People who are considered "different" are being shunned, kicked out of school over what they believe, and as Katz and the many people who posted comments have shown, living through hell - getting spit on, not being allowed to sit at tables during lunch, getting attacked, having their books stolen/burned, being verbally taunted - all while the administration of their schools sit and tell these poor people there's nothing that can be done.

What next? Is the Supreme Court going to rule that school systems can separate kids, as long as the two schools are "separate but equal"?

How long will it be till the geeks are being sent to different schools?
How long until the National Guard has to come in to make sure the ones who dress in black can't go to the school they normally do?
Or better yet - how long till someone comes along with an idea of how to fix this injustice?

Racism never went away. It just came back directed at another set of minorities.

As the old saying goes, those who do not remember the past are forced to repeat it.

  8. It's good. on Q3T on Mac First · · Score: 3

Well, I can say that for a test, it lives up to its name.

Q3T contains two maps, one indoors and one sort of in space. There's no single player mode for the Test, so really you have to hop on a id server. Which isn't a bad thing - I got to frag Tim Willits a few times. :)

The maps look good, although I was getting a sub-par frame rate - the system requirements are through the roof for this one. Also, I was using generic GL drivers (despite what was said elsewhere, there is NO SOFTWARE RENDERING FOR Q3. Must be GL compatable.), so that probably had a lot to do with it.

The networking would've been fine but the server was on the same machine as the FTP server, so everyone's ping was at about 500. Still, it played alright.

It's looking good, outside the astronomical system requirements.

Wait wait wait wait. While Steve Jobs very well might be an egotistical asshole at times, your judging of a company because of the former occupation of it's CEO...wait, strike that. Jobs has gone from being a CEO to being a CEO. There's nothing to argue about here.

You need to make the crucial step of realizing that trusting a company and doing business with a company are two different things. For instance: I don't TRUST Hotline Communications, but I use their software. I don't TRUST most web sites I go to, but I still read them. I don't TRUST UPS, but I (unfortunately) still use them occasionally.

Bleem claims that their emulator will only runs original CD, but this is crap

Not if they coded it right. CVGS was crackable at first to mod chip it, but I have yet to see a mod chip patch for version 1.2. Never mind this - is the bleem! team responsible if users crack their programs? Is that grounds for a lawsuit?
