whether it's a digital copy...or a CD...it still belongs to Metallica. On another note, slashdot's article claims that ICQ and AIM are mp3 sharing programs as well. They are, but so is the WEB,FTP,.IRC....but they aren't getting sued are they! If Napster was Smart, they should have used their technology on sharing in a general form. So music, pix, movies, anything could be shared. Then they wouldn't be getting this much attention. But, on the other hand. How Else are they going to get Free publicity on huge tv stations =).
also when people claim that Napster is like recording off of the radio, It would be like a radio station telling everyone exactly what was on, and playing full albums of artists 24 hrs a day.
This is the linux community from a whole different perspective. One of the main differences between OSS and freesoftware is the fact that it is "free Beer". Interesting that a group that is so pushing so hard for free speech..is in fact pushing for free beer.
I think they forgot to mention the fact that the kids that shot up the school at Columbine were taking anti-depressants. Although video-games nowadays are violent(and I love every one of them, especially old school Q1 TF), they are not the direct cause of the acting out of violence. Here are some theories I have on the causes: 1) The parents: They should actually spend time with their kids, instead of having the TV babysit. 2) the kids were mentally unstable anyway, and the assholes at school who were bullying them every day of their lives didn't help much either. They were going to crack: anyone would under such circumstances(For some it would have been a fight, for the mentally unstable....). No-one deserved to die, It kind of pisses me off, though, when they interviewed the alleged bullies, and they still say that they didn't even know that they were getting bullied. If Anyone has ever been in highschool...they know...those kids probably got humiliated by the athletes for months. 3) government testing: Here is my government conspiracy theory. Isn't it kind of funny how we have had so many school kid shootings in the last 10 years. The governement could be testing some kind of drug or device that makes anyone into the perfect soldier...willing and able to do any kind of killing, without even thinking about themselves or their family. And what perfect way to convince the American Public that Gun Control is the Answer.

thanks, this just proves my other point: the slashdot community is only behind their own, not freedom or free speech. Bruce got the support of over 50% of the slasdotters. But Metallica, on the other hand, "sold out" or "are money hungry bastards" or "don't need the money". Translation: you don't believe in the practices of the Free Software Movement (Which if you hadn't noticed already, is starting to become a political movement), you don't deserve any rights.
if my boss told me I didn't deserve da money...I would leave and find another well-respected job..most preferably Burger King.

The premise of your argument is that Slashdot, by posting this story, is condoning piracy. The rest of your post consists of a diatribe about the evils of piracy.
this statement is wrong. First off, slashdot has the right to post a news article about piracy, and I don't believe they are condoning to piracy one bit(where the hell did you get that from anyway?). second. I agree with you. Napster Should NEVER become illegal, and I hope it doesn't. My whole point, which you seemed to have missed, was that in the slashdot world (ie. the majority of the posters), Big comapnies deserved to get fucked, because they don't need the money.
WHY? If you had a billion dollers, and people were stealing from your main income source(even if it's a little), you still have a right to protect it. It might be stingy and selfish and for all the wrong reasons, but it's that kind of freedom that I would like to stay in the U.S.

seems like a great answer to all slashdotter's problems. If they don't like people stealing, destroy them. Kind of like what someone did to metallica's site, when someone hacked it, and put "leave napster alone".
That's going to really get your point across. People will just see the OSS community as a bunch of "punk kids", and it will never be taken seriously.

man...I see how slashdot is now...they respect only the people's rights they care about, their own. The amount of money a person has, should have NOTHING to do with their rights. if Bruce P. was filthy rich, would everyone in slashdot agree that he should stand up for his rights??
That's what FREEDOM is all about...but I guess when you only have the the words of the godly Richard Stallman in your mind, it doesn't matter.
If I was getting fucked out of some money, that I worked damn hard for, I would be pissed too.
what would happen if you worked for an employer, and they just decided one day that you only derserve half your paycheck, because "you had enough money already". You would be just as pissed as Metallica is right now.
The point I was trying to get across was that the same people who think sharing copyrighted music is "free rights" are the same people think that Bruce P. should stand up for his rights for the GPL violation....clearly Hypocritical....
no....im saying when 75-80% of slashdot posters think its ok to violate copyrights (including stallman, which is obvious in his interviews), don't get pissed when someone gives you a taste of your own medicine...
it's like being part of the Nazi party: you shouldn't get angry if people hate you for killing jews, Even if you didn't. Don't mis-interpret this...im just using it as an example...nothing more
Look at Napster
Im not saying Napster is at fault..the users are at fault for sharing pirated Music. Im saying Slashotters say music should be on Napster Because it gives the artists free advertising, but of course the Artists don't like this, and music is being shared, for free, against their will. But what about the up and coming artists who want their music to be free? Well..why don't we have a napster with Just new-artists Music. You see, you are becoming a group that is like the lower-class of society. If you can't have something..take it. If it's not by your rules, fuck'em...make them go by our rules. It would be fine for me, if beliefs were to just release things like software and music, for free. But even stallman thinks that ALL music/software should be free. What the HELL kind of FREEDOM is that?? It's freedom of speech(or religion for some people) to have such beliefs...and that's fine...but when the freedom of others are taken away....is where it should stop....
the same people in this discussion, on the side of the GPL, are on the same side that believes that pirating music and software is part of their "free right", knowing full well that it violates copyrights and or agreements. It shows me how hypocritical a society can be when the rights that they are fighting for, are the work of a brainwasher such as stallman. But you will fight this till the end, because you don't realize the consequences or the truth.
