So, seriously, can someone explain to me what the eff "Anti-social behaviour" in a legal context means? Sounds to me like I'd be arrested in heartbeat there!
While this and other "zero-tolerance" policies seem so offensive to us, just think about what our grandchildren will say. They'll be so accustomed to this type of law enforcement it won't phase them at all. "What do you expect, grandpa, they were climbing a tree for godsake! Somebody had to do something!"
would be to limit wifi access in class. Problem is, kids with laptops probably spend a fair amount of time checking email, slashdot, etc. Sure, i might look something up on wikipedia, but the kid nextto me probably shouldn't be chatting w/his gf, etc.
Even if Media is excluded from the language of the bill, it will still have negative consequences. Primarily, I wonder how it could not stiffle or discourage whistle blowing, if said whistleblower feared running afowl of this new law. Leaks are often bad, but they are often important---otherwise the public would have no knowledge of bad policy. I would doubt, with all the trouble the patriot act had passing, that this would pass as well.
Unfortunately, though, the past 20 years we've relied more and more on the courts to protect our freedoms. I wish it didn't come to that, because sometimes they mess up too (imminent domain anyone?
Question: Battery drain mostly occurs from the phone sending a signal to the tower, not from receiving. I don't think this would kill batteries like people think, right?
Answers:
1. this would be great for listening to talk radio if podcasting weren't an option--which it isn't for many.
2. The first generation may not be perfect, but the 1st ipod was "lame" too. Many people don't have earbuds now, but they will if they like the idea of listening to the radio.
3. Sadly, not everyone has music tastes as cool and as original as yours so many will be okay with listening to Clearchannel. Conversely, my taste in music is exponentially better than yours.
I used to work for a human rights group that a (not the US) large government was actively trying to mess with.
If I am not using a mac, which of course has the password keychain (Brilliant) then I think the best thing to do would be to write the password down in a long string of mutually unintelligble keystrokes, or a long list, or add an extra character or two. I would write my 6s to look like bs, + and T. The user of course would remember what is what, but if the paper is comprimised, the data is not.
So as a fanboy with nothing to do on a friday afternoon with no class I must take issue with the whole easier to roam from network to network thing...
As a student at a private California university (not ucsc as per my name), we have different wifi networks all over the place. I'm using a PBg4 with airport express and mac os 10.3.8.
Whenever and wherever I open up my laptop, it automatically connects me to the best (or predetermined) network available, and it usually takes 5 seconds.
The only time i've had to open up my Network connection system prefence is when i failed to realize that my airport express base was unplugged!

Wrong. Taiwan does not have a team in FIFA. Taiwan plays as Chinese Taipei, which was a compromise between China and Taiwan. you'll note Hong Kong also has a team.
BTW, they do this for the olympics too.

Phishing is a big problem for those who may be too old or too busy to remember what their bank's URL should be. with URL spoofing in IE, it's an even bigger problem.
I think the most important thing is education. Anti-phishing technology will only be a stop gap measure. Phishing techniques will just become more advanced. I think an agressive advertising campaign, including information when you sign up for a bank account, information when you log on to your account or receive your bill will also be helpful. the previous author mentioning the example of additional login info is correct, the phisher will just reload until the information requested is available to them.
say what you will but at least most Iraqis are glad the US invaded, and want us to stay for a while. oh, and we let them protest and practice their religion.
Can anyone post a suggestion to how we might be able to change our address? I'm sure my forwarding has long expired. Every itinerant person deserves his or her due!
California does not have an official language, or languages, which is why you can get state information in several languages, including Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Spanish, etc.
bilingual education is banned in state schools, which doesn't include ESL or special ed. And remember, 227 was supported by a lot of hispanic families who wanted their children to have a better opportunity to learn proper English.
The problem with paper voting wasn't the counting system, but the innacurate/non standardized methods of presenting the cadidates, and making people put a hole through a piece of paper paper. Instead, let voters select their candidates on screen, have the ballot be printed (maybe with a barcode!) and have them hand it in to the moderators. It solves the problem of clarity/standardization, and you're not doing electronic tabulation.
The condescending nature of your first sentence is unnecessary.
More importantly, Your example doesn't really apply: There's a significant difference between tweaking customs regulations and getting a new standard adopted that every company in a sector must adhere to. How easy would it be to get your friend to have us fuel emmisssion standards changed, even if he had a contact in the appropriate position.
Or If your friend tried to get the US FCC to adopt a standard for wireless networking, it would be a lot more difficult for him to do it. It would take more than one burreaucrat's rent seeking behavior.
I honestly don't think some burreaucrat would be able to push through a regulation of this level without broader government support. Remember, this is probably annoying a lot of chinese companies too.
I don't think it's too far fetched to accuse the CCP/Chinese government of malice.
My guess is that it's a combination of both factors. They're doing it for security reasons, but you can bet your life someone is getting rich off of it.
This could be a part of the golden shield project.
For the past few years, China has placed top priority on the development of its golden shield project, which with the help of American companies like Cisco and Canadian companies like lucent, is the most ambitious surveillance project in history. It essentially allows public security (gong'an ju) unprecendented access to citizen's data, both government (i.e. danwei information) and private (email, telephone conversations, text messages, etc.). They want to make sure its citizens aren't discussing democracy, praticing falun gong, or any other unauthorized religion like roman catholicism (or any church that doesn't have a "patriotic" association with the government, or having an unauthorized birth.
I'm laughing at myself cuz I know I sound slightly paranoid, but it's true.

Not to be rude, but it's not like the makers of Firefly are some children's charity. They'll do fine just on their own.
Fox has got you in the palm of their hand if you think the firefly release is like some indie band from your college town that you want to help promote.
relatively short network run may have helped DVD sales, Video Store's Judith McCourt says. "It really speaks to something that had a following, was cut off network TV, and people said, 'What did I miss?' "
I don't think people are saying "hmm, I think I'll check out the family guy." Consumers of the DVD were fans of the show. It sounds like no one wants to admit that fox made a mistake when they cancelled it.
Also I wonder if they make the same turn around when they see the strong Firefly DVD sales

with CCTV, Rimen Ribao (People's daily), China Daily, People's daily online, etc., they definitely have the fox news angle covered, and then some.
