I seem to recall an episode of the Jetsons where
Elroy had a cereal box based on a cartoon
hero of his. The box also functioned as a TV
so you could watch the cartoon as you were eating
the cereal. Maybe one day they will have boxes
with tv's printed on the back?
Yes, we all know we did it. I bet we all had that thread (or threads) that we look back at now and think, "How could I be so stupid, so immature, so... so.. what was I thinking." You can also check out friends and family members. For me it was rather sad. I found where someone posted the news that my father had died. I had no idea he was that active on newsgroups.
All of what we knew about planets and their atmospheres
came from studying only 9 planets and a limited
number of moons. Now I am sure we will soon
have hundreds of planets and their atmospheres
to study. We could learn a great deal about
how atmospheres work -- this could help us save
the one on our planet. It is amazing how much you
can learn about the universe without stepping
foot off our one little planet in the middle of
nowhere
I have been using SuSE since version 5.x. For years I thought SuSE was the only distro. Lately though SuSE has been pissing me off. The fact that yast is free as in beer but not as in speech always made me worry a little, but yast is a great program. But now they take their sweet old time putting the latest version on their ftp site. Once you do try to download it their site is slow as all get out (never had much luck with the mirrors.) If you try to buy a shrink wrapped copy then you have to buy the profesional version if you want to write programs (I thought gcc was free.) Then if you want xfree86 4 (3 doesn't support my video card well -- and if I upgrade why do I have to install an older version?) you have to find where the rpm is hidden (usually I just download it from xfree86.org -- that doesn't screw up the system too badly.) I wouldn't say SuSE is evil and it is great for some people (and they have done a lot of work for xfree86 and reiser which helps us all) but I think I am ready for a change. No problem! There is debian slackware, redhat, etc etc. I could even make my own distro (thinking of doing just that.) I am also pissed off at windows. However with windows I am pretty screwed! You can either buy it from Bill or break the law by downloading it. Either way SuSE is awesome compared to windows yet with windows I don't have a choice of where to get the os.
When I first switched to Reiser I had this habit of just turning off the power to my box every few minutes just because I could. No good could come from this. Hopefully as more people switch to journaling FS they will have more self control than I had. Anybody else do the same thing? It is so addictive! Must resist turning off box after I post this...
I thought the DC (and all video consoles these days) comes with security features that prevent you from booting pirated games or playing out of region games. I didn't see anything in the article about overcoming those restrictions. Has Sega's scheme been so broken into that everyone now knows how to boot their own (which must look like a pirated) CD without anyproblem. Or is it not a problem because it is a CD-ROM and not a GD-ROM? Anyone know more about this?
"Do you ever read advocacy newsgroups?...you find nothing but 'My system is better than your system' nonsense. It's its own form of online masturbation."
-Linus Torvalds in his book "Just For Fun."
So no I don't think he said the first quote but he does sometimes compare stuff to masturbation. He may even spell things wrong sometimes; after all, he isn't a native English speaker.
Ah yes, you must work for the government.
Yes with the fiscal year ending we all have lots
of money to spend this year or we'll loose it
next year. Don't you love working for the government?
Sometimes I think the only job in America that
is better than working for the government is being a domestic cat.
At work we have a $100,000 bit error rate analyser that has a 120meg super disk as its only real output device. Try buying one of those puppies at any price these days. Walked into my local CR (near Balimore MD) found one in the as is bin for $0.99! They didn't know what it was -- they thought it was some strange floppy drive with an ide interface (in a way they were right.) Also got a lot of isa 3comm internet cards and isa scsi cards for about a buck each. The people at my CR aren't clueless like the people at most computer stores. They are nice and friendly and even though they are a bit more expensive I still end up buying stuff from them.
Each CR is independently owned. This means that
some stores do suck but some are ok. It is true
that in many ways you are better of getting new
than used, but it depends on what you need. For
some people going to one of these stores might
make sense.
Wasn't there an SNES version of doom? And if not I think there was a segaCD or 32x version. So yes, I am pretty sure it will play doom. Or since it is just a windows pc in a plexiglass case with a cool menu system you could just play the pc version of doom (but what fun would that be?)
I would imagine that every once in a while the computer would need to go online to get some more dirty limericks or something. If you have a limited number of jokes then it might not be too long before you have heard them all. If telling the same old joke again doesn't get the driver up then the computer will be forced to tell a new joke about the man from Nantucket.
I wonder how long these shoes will last? Once the shoe starts to wear out will the crystals still work? Also could you hook these guys up to a frequency generator? You would then have a vibrating shoe. Could be fun at parties!
I thought the point of a good compiler was to speed up the run time performance. If compiling a program now takes twice as long but the resultant binary is now 30% faster wouldn't that be a good thing? And if fast compilations are important aren't there optimizers etc that you can turn off?
You need green blue and red LEDs to make white light since LED's are monochromatic. The Blue ones seem to be the most expensive ones and I am guessing the other LED's get much brighter (this means you need more blue ones than greens or reds.) The Blue ones don't last as long as the lower frequency ones do either. I am guessing these won't really catch on until the blue ones are almost as cheap as the red.
Will PSInet have to give the name of the stadium where the Ravens play back to the city of Baltimore? Will they sell it to some else? Or will the stadium still be called PSInet even after the company goes under? Anyone know?
Yeah you are right. If linux had won they would have posted it on slashdot or something. Instead we are learning about the study from our psychic friends.
That's funny, I was just wondering how europeans handle the messed up 200+V 50 hz system. I was also wondering if superconducter will let us drop the voltage even further. No more high voltage power lines? Not everything we americans do is messed up (although we do enough messed up stuff that I can understand how you might think that.) The American 3 phase circuit means that there is in fact 240-220V going into the average US house. If you need 240V for high power stuff like AC or dryer you are all set. 200 is close to the voltage that could kill you. You might still be able to touch it and live -- but 200 is close enough for my taste. In america you can touch a 120V american plug and unless you are standing in your bath tub you are just fine. I understand that in some european countries they have funly spring loaded plugs to prevent kids from touching the 200+ lines. Yes it is the current and not the voltage that kills you; while this is true it is also the famous last words of someone who is about to kill himself. A lot of newer devices take much less power than older ones. That means the first thing your TV or computer does is drop you 200+ AC line down to 5 volts dc or so. The only time 200 would come in handy would be when you are running a vacuum cleaner or something. So you have to get more expensive wires to do that in the US but your plugs can be cheaper. At the same time you get increased safety. Then there is the entire 50hz versus 60hz thing. The TV signal in your country is tied to the frequency of your AC lines. While it is ture that NTSC has less resolution than PAL, PAL is at 50hz instead of 60hz. People who are really into video games prefer NTSC over PAL (and not just because all the best games come out in american or japanese ntsc first.) So while there are some advantages to 200+V 50 hz the american way of doing it isn't totally screwed up either.
At 20gigs you can put a couple of DVD's on it. Thank the gods for DECSS! You can upgrage from mpeg layer 2 to divx:) or something and put all the episodes of SouthPark on one disk. Though a 20gb disk costs $200 which is only $50 less than the drive itself. I wonder if they are selling the drive at a loss and making up with it for the sale of the disks. Hopefully over time the price of these will drop so that a 20gb disks costs about the same as a 1GB jaz disk does today.
Yes it would be a waste of OUR money if the mouse
was stolen. OTH it is even more of a waste of our
money to go through the paperwork and what not
to keep track of the mouse. For some reason the fed
is more concerned about the $$$ they spend to buy
things than the $$$ they spend the employees to
keep track of things. A logical person would look
at it and realize that time and equipment both
cost tax payer money, but the government isn't logical.
In industry you see that the larger the company the more stupid red tape you must deal with.
There is no company bigger than the fed. I am not sure what we can do about it, I am just complaining about it anyway:)

If only Sega would make a portable genesis.
I know, they could call it a nomad or something...
oh wait, never mind!

I always wanted to be a lumberjack!
why do you care? Sooner or later you need to realize
that we are all human, and that is more important
than what country we come from.

Laptop that you "forgot" to return $900
Server that you stuffed into your trench coat $3000
Knowing that you screwed over the VC....
Priceless!

Doom? X-Mame? It's nice that after all of that work the dreamcast can finally be used to play video games :)
