  1. Ottawa... on Ottawa Linux Symposium 2000: Tech Rocks! · · Score: 1

I live in Ottawa. Would you not admit that it's a nice place for a Linux get-together? =P

I think we deserve a few more of these. Maybe not as big as LinuxWorld, but besides being "Silicon Valley North", we've also been called "Linux Capital of the World". Hey, I'll go for that.

I must admit, I know a lot more people using Linux around here from the net than most other places in the world.

I meant to attend the OLS but I jsut missed the signup. Now I'm kicking myself in the head. I hope everyone who went had a good time, and I'll see you there next year!

"Oh Canada, our home and Linux land..."

  2. Linux? on Distributed Operating Systems? · · Score: 1

Why not? I'm sure if the need came around the good folks working on the Linux kernel could come up with something.

RIght now we already have processing distributed over multiple processors. I guess what you're asking is complete distribution between two separate machines. Is this not what Beowulf (sp?) tries to do?

Either way, multiple shareloading over the internet should come around eventually (maybe this is more on subject). The only problem with this at this point is that sending bits and bytes back and forth over the net takes more time and CPU power than just doing it locally. It's kinda sci-fi right now. You know, Star Trek ships have two computer cores co-operating full time and a backup core. Hell, even the twenty year old space shuttle has two computers effectively working together.

    So what's the question? =P

  3. Those look comfortable... on Review Of The New Apple Mouse · · Score: 3

People are saying that the mouse is horrible for gaming, since there's only one mouse button and no wheel.

I'll say the near-opposite. The fact that there's no wheel follow's Apple's classic strategy -- simplicity.

Does no one hate Microsoft for making the mouse as complex as it is now? I know that when I go to my friend's house and he has a Logitech 4-button mouse I just can't immediately figure out how to use it.

One button is simple. It's cool.

  4. In my experience... on Helping Artists Online · · Score: 1

I've worked with a start-up artist, one that has done herself not-bad. She could have done better, had it not been for the exorbitant costs of the media companies.

Yes, I agree that the artists need more protection, especially from the media companies that will easily charge them sooooo much for distribution as to nearly make them bankrupt.

The artist I'm talking about recently released her new CD, and I can tell you, it took a lot of time, money, patience, negotiations to reach a deal with Sony Records. I'm told not to share the exact figure, but I can tell you that it costs a lot more than I initially assumed it would.

Knowing this, I'm confident that a lot of artists are discouraged and don't want to create an album. Even recording at a studio will cost you about a thousand dollars a day for a decent recording.

So herein comes the internet. Is it the best medium for startup artists or will they just be giving their proprietary music away? I'd have to say that for now, CDs are still a much better way for artists to get the money they desperately need. Believe me, they have to live very cheap lives to get anywhere, as ALL of the money has to go to advertising, recording, and CD making.

  8. Dead concept? on DTI Stereoscopic LCD Virtual Window Review · · Score: 2

Is it jsut me, or are 3D/steroscopic glasses a dead concept?

I remember back in the mid-90s that on every PCGamer there was an Ad for these things, but I never recall very much software that supported them and they were always overpriced. I don't know anyone who has them and I've never really seen them in stores.

And now with an $11,000 price tag, I doubt they're going to make very many sales. It's really sad when a company makes a great product that can't sell based on the price...

  9. Why? on Video Information From Disinformation · · Score: 1

What kind of a company would want to force people to use their hardware to play their media? It's kind of a monoply... well, duh.

Sony has tried this one. Notice that Memory Stick can only be used by Sony devices. And it's a cool invention, but closed standards like that only hurt business. Furthermore, depending on the severity of the issue, I would say it often leads to a long, boring court case (ie, MS)...

    Hello.
I also saw this news item on PalmStation. The general view there seems to be that the unit is 'ugly'. You can find the comments about it here.
I don't see why anyone finds this thing ugly, or big, or unfunctional. I agree that it's not the prettiest of designs, and I think the shape is a little too round. I really wish they had done more with a Palm Five-ish case design.

The first comment on that page is interesting: the guy predicts this thing to flop. If this flops, Palm could get into troubles.

  15. Rewrite of PERL... on Larry Wall Announces Perl 6 · · Score: 1

A rewrite of Perl would be nice, as long as compatibility could be addressed. I imagine that in the new version there would be some compatibility glitches to work out.

Either way, as cool as Perl is, I know (and I'm sure everyone else knows too) that there are parts of the code that could be optimized in the rewritten version.

I'm curious. Maybe a few cool new data processing functions could be added too? I know There's a couple of array functions I wouldn't mind that are present even in VB! Kickass.

  16. One Can Only Hope... on Napster And Legal Movie Distribution · · Score: 1

I am skeptical about this working. How good can the quality be on a movie downloaded from the net? Unless it's going to be a bazillion megabytes in size, I don't see how the quality could compare to popular technologies like DVD.

Fact is that I, like many other people, have no desire to watch movies on my computer screens when I have a large projection TV in the room next door.

On the other hand, this could lead to more 'fun' and entertaining law suits.

  17. Conspiracy Theory... on Intel Tests Show PC133 SDRAM Bests RDRAM · · Score: 1

Come on people, need more conspiracy material!

  18. StrongArm. on SOCs: Say Goodbye To C's? · · Score: 2

    The StrongArm was mentioned.

This is particularly good, because many, many, applications for this chip have already been compiled for this chip by Rebel.Com for the NetWinder, including, of course, the Linux kernel.

The Netwinder is a very small and power unhungry device already, but I can imagine even smaller, more eficient devices.

Perhaps something that can run QNX? Or maybe Compaq could give more though to the ITSY?

Well, the future sure looks energy-efficient. Indeed.

  19. PDAs... on Printing Out A New Monitor · · Score: 1

This technology has a much wider use for PDAs than cellphones. One of the shortages Palm has been having lately is the LCD screens, which are getting harder and harder to get since it's a painstaking process to create one. A cheap, printed substitue is exactly what Palm needs.

  20. How Fair? How Conclusive? on Linux Beats Win2000 In SpecWeb 2000 · · Score: 1

Although I'm biased towards Linux, I'm wondering if this is fair (as usual). A few years ago, those nasty benchmarks that put Linux down were comparing a well-updated Windows system to a somewhat bloated RedHat system with a rather large footprint.

Now the tides have turned. Although everyone knows that Win2K is a resource hog (being buit over NT), how stripped down was the Linux system?

Don't get me wrong: I'm very happy to see the Linux systems beat the W2K systems, but I'm just pointing out that these benchmarks are never really comclusive because there are different grounds of comparison. It's like comparing an orange to a lemon, they're both citrus fruits, but although very similar in many ways, very different in others.

Using a hack on the nav systems?

For some reason I can't see this working very well. Whenever software is used to enhance hardware that has a different purpose, the outcome is never very good. I'm a little skeptical that this will triangulate to the degree of accuracy needed when identifying a single body in the sky.

Then again, if enough of these are out there, the triangulation may be quite precise. Perhaps 'triangulation' will be the wrong word!
