In true Nerd fasion (and due to my omnipitence)... I considered this. But aren't all the/.'s out and about on the network already? All something like this does is direct the existing traffic (with which I am competing) to a single destination. Maybe if I was attempting to connect with a server on the same backbone as the/. target, I would experience trouble, otherwise...
Let's talk about modern operating systems for a minute....
disk quota's multiuser remote administration loading libraries and kernel mods w/o rebooting POSIX (without a seperate resource kit) Doing anything without rebooting...
Supporting world standards, not writing a proprietary one and saying everyone should standardize around it.
Come to think of it my favourite shell utils and apps that I have been using for 15 years on UN*X boxes don't come built into NT boxes.
not writing databases so that Joe Anycoder thinks he's an instant expert and writes queries that couldn't scale to save his a*s!!!
M$ is running scarred my friends. We should have a community rebuttal site for this kind of FUD. I hope some info for this article and the many more that will follow show up on unix-vs-nt.org I've already told everyone in my IT department to look at it.
If the OSS community or just technical people in general ever want to have the power we seemingly desire to shape this industry, then we need to come up with some sort of methods for dealing with companies who act like this... Whether or not it's some sort of international boycott or a refusal to cooperate professionally (for those who are employed by other companies). If we all told Bell Atlantic, or any other company for that matter that we felt policy X was unjust and that until they change it we will simply make it as difficult as possible to do business, anywhere!!
As long as we don't cross over into violating RICO law or anything nutty like that, we just might have an impact on lame-ass companies trying to push consumers around. If we don't do something, we could all wind up looking at a world that resembles a William Gibson novel.....
The problem with trying to base your home entertainment system on PC hardware and software is a matter of proprietary algorithms. AC-3, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic, THX etc, etc... Motorolla manufactures a DSP for $20 (in bulk) that will detect and DECODE all of these signals and send them to your respective Digital-Analog Converters. In other words, it should be dirt cheap to replace your reviever, DVD, CD, tuner with a PC with the latest from sound blaster. Unfortunately the licensing for these technologies would make a board cost $2000, just like a receiver that will do this stuff. We need to build software and libraries for Linux, etc... that emulates these decoding algorithms in the same manner that SSLeay was built. It's the only way you will be able to make your PC the center of your entertainment center. Please correct anything that is incorrect in here, all my research in the subject is based off of web sites....
I have a RedHat 5.0 box IP Masquerading my DHCP cable modem to several Windoze boxes. It uses 2 3Com 3C503 combos. I updated everything on the box to RedHat 5.2 using RPMS and then used the Russian Tango RPMS that were posted here last week and compiled 2.2.1 from kernel.org. Everything seemed to work fine until it tried to find eth1. It gave some errors about being unable to find the module (which is the same as eth0)... I backed out to 2.0.36 from RedHat 5.2. Has anyone seen anything similar to this?
that flight simulator hidden inside Excel 97?
No wonder Office takes up a couple hundred MB.

Maybe so...
I can actually log on to rawhide.redhat.com
or get a spot on Id's Quake servers....
Mental Note: Announce Star Wars Trailer next time I need access to server...

Vincent Gallo's independent film with Christina Ricci - Buffalo '66
Ending scene has Vincent Gallo shooting himself in the head... They freeze and pan around with his face all contorted. Very cool!!
It was released in 1998... don't know if that helps with the patent.
