I don't have the exact quote, but I got it from The Truth by Terry Pratchett. Basically news thats is furthering the interest of the public isn't that interesting to the public. Which explains the sports and "human interest" segments of newspapers and TV. As well as shows like Crossfire.

This doesn't explain why normal news segments feel they need to give equal time to each side, even when one side is just making crap up (witness all the time given to the whole Swift Boat Veterans for Truth).

It does really annoy me how poll-driven the news stories are. It turns into a feedback loop since some people like to think they are voting for a winner, as if their vote didn't count otherwise. And given the polls have a generally conservative bias, since they don't poll people without telephones. It comes down to lazy journalists more then anything.

Its easy to tell which shows originated from G4 and which from TechTV. The G4 shows always have a kind of a lame sense of humor and they're always fawning over whatever product or game that they're talking about. Based on the humor, I'd say the target audience of G4 is the likes of that annoying guy in your eigth grade class. TechTV shows (Screen Savers, easiest to see the difference with X-Play) can actually be funny.

Basically I think LA is a lamer city then San Francisco. If LA notices something it becomes lame practically by definition. Before they were able to have various notables of Silicon Valley live... now they have actors live. Great.

Anyways, next time I'd advise you to either cite sources or be clear that your taking a phrase used casually in a literal academic sense. Its obvious you knew what was meant, but you decided to be difficult.

  23. how it is enforced is what matters on University Bans Wireless Access Points · · Score: 1

I don't have problems with Unversities having a policy like this and then only enforcing on students who have anonymous access points. For the same reason you can't have NAT routers on the network, students shouldn't be allowed to give anonymous wireless access. Students computers might then connect to a students router without them even knowing it. And then if the connecting student gets a virus, the wireless access point gets its internet shut off which doesn't actually solve the problem (we had a problem last year where Mac users were getting shut off for spreading worms since Windows users were getting a NAT address from them). Basically it takes away power from the networking team that it needs to be able keep a LAN working, not to mention possible privacy invasions by those running the wireless routers.

Those students who have wireless routers with proper WAP encyption poses really no such threat. It means a student connecting to that router knows what router they are connected to.
