I honestly don't think game authors are worried about sales of new games, the open sourcing of Quake proved that. The main issue is copyright law requires you to venamently defend your copyright in order to keep it. If laws allow companies to ignore this they would, because this kind of things only keeps interest alive when n@mco releases compilation cd's with pac-man and the like
There is another factor that contributes to the success of SETI, the teams. Being part of a team allows you to do two things:
Compete with and be ranked against a similar group of people with in all likely hood similar computing access.
Compete against other teams. In my campus one of the reasons we have so many people running seti is due to the intense rivalry with our schools central campus.

While the proposed implementation is flawed the theory is sound. I once had a similar idea on a smaller scale for my university, just to busy with other stuff to get off my dead ass and do it. Basically the dorm subnet had dns names in such as wh104a for west hall room 104 occupant A. while this was nice an organized and it was easy to figure out a persons ip address, assuming they were using their assigned one, we all had names for out machines like cotangant and turtle. Our idea was to set up a server on one of our machines with these names with the rule that if the name isn't listed here go try the real dns servers. We were considering caching the real ones too. Anyway it can be done, and yes it might cost money if done on the suggested scale, but its feasible.
Cars are different than CS. It's one thing if the average computer user needs to know less about the workings of the computer nowadays; it would be a completely different thing if car builders thought that physics were irrelevant to what they do.
Ok are you talking about programmers or end users? I think we all agree that programmers need to be properly versed in theory (parallel computing, algorithims, computation theory, converting from binary to decimal, etc) as well as practice (learning C, C++, Lisp , assembler and a variaty of other languages). However, end users can be quite productive by clicking pretty icons. Thats not to say they couldn't be more productive after studying the mysteries of bash, vi, emacs, and the appropiate utilities for there job (eg a markup language for someone in the publishing business). Lets face it, many of us/.ers don't have the desire or know how to rebuild a transmission. This is just an example I'm sure plenty of you can. However, that does not hinder your ability to use it as the end user aka driving it!
Is it going to be in a similar manner to IPv4 aka class A,B,C,D and E blocks. How does one aquire the rights to public blocks? Has the routing concept been changed?
Can anyone comment on X-Windows on an Imac with rage 128. I know the drivers are new and the 4.0 ones work better then the 3.3.X ones from my experience with an All-in-Wonder-128. A very good peice of hardware, just wish it had Video-4-linux-Support.
This would definatly increase increase the likelyhood of my next machine being a G4. Nvidia makes X rock. I'll be the first to admit that I tend to stick to the console, but there are some things that need X. Anyway, at the very least this will definatly excite the Linux PPC community. Can't wait to play Quake on one of these machines.
I must disagree with you. This phenomon has happened in many industries, only without people worrying about it. When the auto industry started making Cars that were lower mantiance and mass producing them there was a drop at some point the average "car intelligence" of people dropped. This has't affected our society that illfully. While the high school motor head may be an endangered species, and the auto industry has stopped printing shop manuals for certain models, we have better, faster, fuel effecient cars for the masses and Model-T kits for those that wish to build replicas. It is true that there other issues such as copyright, licensing, and availability of sourcecode that end users are mostly ignorant of. However it is possible to explain these issues to the public without teaching them C.
Lets hope the move isn't premature. Lots of good anime is on the old big LaserDiscs, and now it is getting harder and harder to find players for those. Well companies will probally convert laserdisc anime to DVD. Also, for any of that anime that isn't being rereleased on DVD, I'm sure people will find ways of getting them in AVI or MPG format.
I wouldn't Mind paying $399 at all. The argument in a previous post about iOpener being forced into taking this hard stance argued opposite. If they sold the damn thing for a price they could profit from, they could encourage the hacking. Honestly, if the modified and set it to boot from an eprom they could market it as an X terminal. They should also try the linux in the Bios thing. Network booting without dealing with Eproms at all.
Keep in mind that alot of/.ers took part in the whole Mac/Windows in there M$ days. For many of us alot of this information is new. Unfortunatly the mac posts on/. reflect their ignorance.
Does he mean that his goal is to hit servers across the Internet without being detected? I was reading a post yesterday on the script kiddie story which stated pretty much that stronger predators lead to stronger prey, and it applies here too. This means one of two things are going to happen:
We find new ways to detect their stealth scans
This leads to a hightened awareness of security so they can scan us all they want and won't find any SpLoIts.
According to leaked versions of the plan, Microsoft will divide its buildings and other properties in two down the middle with the masking tape, thus marking the territories of the new companies. Employees of either company would be forbidden to cross the line for any reason.
I assume that on each floor there is a board room in the exact center so both companies can hold "parallel meetings."
Two as-yet-undetermined Microsoft executives will be chosen as leaders. These leaders will then go through a process known as "choosing up sides" where they will alternate choosing from a full assembly of Microsoft employees to form the two new companies. To decide who will choose first, they will "shoot" odds and evens, with the best two out of three winning the opportunity to select first.
You mean Microsoft is still in the embrace stage with odds and evens. I would think that they would shoot irrational and imaginary numbers
Half of Microsoft stockholders will be contacted and instructed to cross out "Microsoft" and write in the name of the new company on their stock certificates
They forgot to mention that Bill is giving Melinda 50% of his stock.
Bill Gates will remain as chairman of the OS division, and according to the plan a mysterious and previously unknown twin sister, Willemina Gates, has been appointed chairperson of the second company.
We all know the Its the queen, and not Loqutous(assimilated Picard know I spelled it wrong) that runs the collective.
It is suspected the OS company will retain Fear, while the everything-else company will obtain Uncertainty and Doubt.
I wonder how embrace, extend, and expunge are gonna me divided. You got to check out the full story very funny.
While I'm notone of Gates gratest fans, I must agree that Microsoft Office running under Linux in a stable and sane matter would be great for selling managers linux. Whats a few hundred in licenses compared to the cost of training secrateries and clerks. As an additional bonus, a large majority of your IT staff will happily install star office or kde office or whatever.
I have a dual PII 450, I do use X on ocassion, with bloated window managers. Mainly to have xterms next to each other and for netscape. I didn't mean to insult those that use X, I'm just stating my personal opinion and responding to a post made jokingly with another post made jokeingly
Not really. Outlook is a mail application that has its own seperate protocols and ability to use exchange mailboxes and the like. It also does the whole personal imformation management thing. Anyway. Anyway the issues wioth office api's and the like for Word, Excell and the gang are similar, but Outlook requires a whole new set of protocols and Microsoft nonstandards to be accounted for. Also take into consideration that many sites use Outlook and heavily depend on it, while Staroffice would satisfy there basic personal productivity needs.
You disgust me. Sure my bash promt isn't as good looking, but it sure has endurance, and it's not suck a gold digger. I mean I give my bash prompt a 486 and 8 megs of ram and its more than happy. All the window managers I use to date use to want 3d acceleration, and 32 megs of ram nad a color monitor. Me and my bash prompt though, we just hop in my vt100 serial terminal and cruise the night away with our cat lynx.
While I couldn't think of doing auctual work in a university lab, they are great places to go to read slashdot ans talk with fellow nerds, face to face, well auctualy face adjacent to face with both geek staring at their own monitors. However, social or unsocial, such behavior is seen undesireable by girls because of ("social values" && "peer pressure" && "estrogen"). Now there are exceptions of course, most of which are reading slashdot, but we must allow time and conscience efforts not to pass on these biases to future generations to occur before there can be more women in our proud, but pale ranks. Until then I can only dream of a women who know the true power of the source.
You also say that "there are thousands of incredibly serious users of the 3.x branch that have no desire to break their scripts". So the newer versions lack functionality that the older ones have?
The scripts break because things are entirely rewritten and put in different places. Now I'm not the most experienced FreeBSD user but just as a hypothetical example. Lets just say a whole new backup technology comes out and eradicats tape drives. Now naturally all the freebsd backup utilities will be replaced. Assuming these new utilities still work on tape drives, and you have a tape drive, upgrading to lets just say the 5.x branch from your 4.x bsd means you scripts that run from cron will need o be rewritten. This is probally a poor example so I'll give another one.
Lets say that the BSD people decide to create a devfs in 5.x. Now along with this thet develop a new naming mechanism for the whole dev directory, which btw is very different from linux's. Now assuming you had a network of FreeBSD systems and for some reason NFS wouldn't do (probally security) you probally would have a series of scripts that would perform the functions of Norton Disk doctor.
I think its better put as Unix software is developed for programmers. They are like a mecanics tools, designed to do the job well and effeciently. They are not designed to be intuitive to those unfamilar with there operation. While most people posting/reading this articles discussion could go on and on about the effeciancy of the might bash prompt, if you stop and think about it you wouldn't find it intuitive.

if your so afraid then lock your system down to the point where they can't get in. Encrypt you sensitive data, etc.

you obvisiously didn't get the shaft refrence if you moderated this down.
