Except for the fact that leaded gasoline cars could run unleaded gas with lead-replacement additives put into the fuel.
A lot of DRM would be much more acceptable if the publisher guaranteed to put out a patch X months (or even years) after release to allow off-line play. In a game's life-cycle, the first few months of release are the most profitable. Trying to prevent copy-right infringement at that point is the most productive. If a company, say after 6-9 months would release a patch that removed the DRM, it wouldn't bother me enough to prevent me from buying the game.
Alternative fuels will have their day. But that day isn't today just quite yet. The Chevy Volt has been taken off of production because: It costs too much (even with subsidizes) and doesn't offer enough (35 mil range?).
I'm all for cutting subsidizes to oil companies. They are profitable enough to support themselves. And when Alternative fuels become cheaper than fossil fuels, I'll be the first on the block to switch over. The market wants cheap fuel. Offer me more for less and I'm one happy camper.
BTW: if you check out the new story on/., looks like there has been a jump in Solar tech. Awesome!
I'd rather drill on land. So we can monitor it easily and if there is any spill, it is easy to contain, seal, and clean up. But environmentalists have a fit if you say "ANWR"
,
So oil drilling is pushed off shore. But it is too close to the shore! Environmentalists don't like those oil rigs! Move them farther out!
So we push the limit on how far we can push the oil rigs out... and when they are in an area very hard monitor, very hard to contain, very hard to seal, and very hard to clean up... the environmentalists have a fit that it isn't cleaned up fast enough.
Let the oil companies drill on land. Open up the oil we have on land where it is safer, cleaner, and can be better monitored. That is much better than trusting some other government to monitor (we will never hear about any spills), or having it in an area that an accident could cause massive damage. Plus we can transport oil by pipeline (burning no fossil fuels). That would be much better than a fleet of oil tankers (we all know how environmentally friendly those things are...)
Short-term or micro-evolution has been seen and studied for tens of thousands of years. Think about it, the dog we know today from the Chihuahua to the Great Dane all have a pedigree that stems from a wolf (Grey wolf from what most experts believe).
But, macro-evolution has yet to be proven. We can take any dog and cross breed it with another breed (Great Dane and Chihuahua are still genetically compatible), or with it's parent breed, the wolf. Even after massive physical characteristic changes, genetically the breeds of dog and wolf are still compatible.
At some point there is a break in the breeds, where the offspring is stillborn, sterile, or fertilization never takes place. The closest we have seen is between a donkey and a horse (creating a mule). We never breed donkeys from horses, or horses from donkeys, so there is quite a bit of mystery on what needs to take place for a macro-evolution step to take place. This is where the theory lives.
It's been a few years since I've done research in this area, if someone has found proof of macro-evolution, please post!
The CPI-based results are within $1-2 of this, if you're curious. I tried to dig up some old game prices for comparison, but this information seems hard to find. Anyone know a good source?
Plus add on the price of games back then. I just did a replay of some of my old classics, and finished Space Quest 3. I bought this back 1989 (release) and I remember the first time I won it. During the closing, the game authors ask you "Do you think this game was worth $49.99?". This stuck in my memory because I first said "Yeah! it was great!"... then I started to think about it. I bought the game 2 weeks ago. Fifty bucks and I won the game in 2 weeks. I quickly changed my mind and was rather disappointed that it didn't last longer. I did end up buying the sequels, so I wasn't that disappointed. but it's something to think about.
1989 game price was $50.
2012, prices went up $10... that doesn't even cover inflation. So yes, games can survive $60 price points, and thrive.
Science is about having an open mind. But in many cases, if you question some theory you are branded as a nut. Science is always in flux as we learn more. Once upon a time there was the law of conservation of matter... until this nut named Albert Einstein said "O'rly?"
...afraid to fix the fucked-up tax code where 46% pay no income tax at all.
Riddle me this, Batman:
What percentage of the total pie of income does that 46% who pay no taxes make?
Answer that, and you'll understand why the people who aren't so upset about that particular factoid see you as the one seeing a distorted world through a "political lens". (As it happens -- the Tax Policy Center, who made the 46% estimate, has a much more level-headed assessment).
The issue isn't how much they make, or how much they pay, but that they do pay... something. Get a little skin in the game. If there was a fair/flat tax system place, the 46% that currently pays no taxes would have to weigh the consequence government spending.
If, for example, there was a bill to ensure all pet owners can visit the vet to have their pet spade/neutered and one free checkup per year (call it the Bob Barker bill)... If it costs you nothing, sure! Go for it! It will help those cute puppies and kitties! But, if they say "Your taxes will go up 1% to pay for this", I bet more would say "No, that is part of pet ownership, it's up to the pet owner to pay for it!"
Wasteful spending and government goes hand in hand, and getting more people to get a little skin in the game will help promote a more frugal government. Spending other people's money is easy. Watching others spend your money makes you a bit.... grumpy.
Rick Santorum has been in political office since 1991.
Savages's site has not been around longer. It was designed around somebody not liking Rick Santorum and name calling. Instead of calling somebody names, bring up the issues. Ad Hominem attacks do not promote your point of view, or discredit other points of view. Once you start name calling, your arguments are easily dismissed. We all should have learned by the first grade that name-calling isn't a good way to argue one's point.
If you have issue with Santorum, make those points known. Argue those points. Have people see why your way is better. Perhaps others will see your side. Heck maybe even Santorum may see why you are right and he is wrong and change some of his issues. When name-calling starts, you shut this down.
So yeah, this is a failure on Google's part to allow and promote name-calling as a valid search result.
I kinda hope they succeed, pass the law and block YouTube, Facebook, and every site the feel might be infringing on a copyright.
Why? Simple. The backlash will force the law to be repealed, and it will forever be scarred into the memory of everybody on the planet, preventing other SOPA-like laws from being passed.
The East India Tea company didn't say "Raise taxes on tea". It was big government (King George), who wanted to pay for British programs on the backs of the American colonies... something the Americans had no say in due to the turn around time in sending representatives.
The rich evil corporations are at the mercy of the public. They must convince you to give them your money, unlike the Government that can take it by gunpoint. Don't believe me? Ask Verizon how that $2 "Pay my bill fee" went? Or Ask Netflix about how splitting and dumping the DVD-by-mail service went? Or Bank of America's Debit-card fees went? Did we have to pass laws, change government, or even our evil capitalist ways to make these changes? No. We just said "if you do that, we will take our business elsewhere... and that is the power of capitalism. If you lose your customer base, you lose capital. You lose capital, you lose your business. No "To big to fail" BS. No bailouts. Keep customers happy, and they will reward you. Screw them over, and you will find your behind on the curb. That is how the system should work.
One thing I could of sworn I saw in a D3 demo is a "Loot all by keypress" that was meant to stop the hungry-hungry-hippo effect. With that they could allow character to move using the analog stick and have "B" be "Loot all".
Just quote the verse that states (paraphrased): to God, a 1,000 years is but a day, and a day is a 1,000 years. Aka, God exists outside of time. That supports my believe that such a Creator would exist in some other dimension, and can view the 4th dimension (and perhaps travel) the same way we do in 3.
I wonder if he would of had the same coverage if he was a manager of a Fish & Chips with no public light... or if they would of let him go silently into the night...

Nobody would argue the existence gravity... but people may be a tad upset that the trusted scientific base fudged figures for personal reasons.
The Democrats had a super-majority from 2008-2010, they could of removed it, and the Patriot Act is set up to auto-expire UNLESS Congress passes a bill to extend it. Even if the Legislative branch passed, it, Obama could of had it sit on his desk until it expired... but he made an emergency call (he was on vacation-surprise I know!) to have the bill auto-penned and passed.
Didn't Obama pledge that he would end the Patriot Act?
Fukushima met or exceeded all government safety regulations. It also survived an earthquake that ranks in the top 5 in the world. Being hit by one of the worst tsunami's on the world right afterwards tho... The tsunami afterwards knocked out the diesel powered system for regulating cooling.
So, taking your sarcastic point: Sure! Lets take what didn't work, and add more of it! Because adding more of what didn't work will make it work!
In all honesty: There will always be unforeseen events. This disaster was caused by two major issues that by themselves causes massive damages and massive loss of life. Having both happen at the same time would be disaster no matter what regulation is in place.
Something I want to see is measurable predictions proven. So far a lot of believers make predictions, many if them Dooooooooooom! predictions and so far they always fall flat on their face.
Lets review some of the better ones:
1) Shortly after hurricane Katrina, Global Warming scientists stated that this hurricane would just be the beginning, there would be more and more hurricanes each year and they will be stronger and stronger. Didn't happen, in fact we have less hurricanes and they are weaker.
2) In 2005, the United Nations Environment Programme also predicted that climate change would create 50 million climate refugees by 2010. These include people from islands that are now underwater, or areas of bleak desert conditions (that were lush), or ravaged by the increased hurricanes. Didn't happen.
3) Recently an atlas was released using data from the Global warming research. Instead of actually measuring the glaciers in Greenland, they used the models to show the size of the glaciers. The maps are inaccurate and the glaciers are much bigger than predicted.
4) COMING SOON! Global warming scientists have claimed that the north pole will be "Completely ice free" by 2014 unless something drastic has taken place to reduce human CO2 emissions. Nothing drastic has taken place. CO2 production continues to raise. The countries that are using the Kyoto accord are just buying carbon credits and not reducing CO2 emissions as planned. The top 3 carbon producers are not held the the accord (China, India (both exempt), and US).
Anybody want to make some bets here. I say in 2014 there will be ice at the North pole and it will be with in the range we've seen over the past 20 years (1993 - 2013).
There is a misconception that the rich are job creators. The real job creators are the middle class that can't afford lavish trips abroad or expensive goods manufactured offshore and instead spend their money closer to home.
While it's true that not all rich are job creators, but more job creators fit in the "Rich" side of things than you think. For many businesses, the business income and assets count towards personal income.
If you want to make sure the rich pays their taxes, remove ALL loopholes, but on the other side, make sure everybody pays taxes. I prefer a fair tax system like a flat-tax, or national sales tax. No loopholes. Everybody pays the same percentage. The sales tax is sounding better to me every time I hear about it - Internet sales would get taxed. The trust-fund babies would get taxed. People vacationing here from abroad would get taxes. Heck Illegal Immigrants would get taxed. Everybody pays something, with no loopholes. The rich would have to pay more since they go through ivory back-scratchers and Audi's every week. And it would stop the situation where the people who get taxed nothing, or the least, choosing what other folks should pay. If you want to raise taxes, you raise it for everybody.
