This is with or without the 10.2 flash player? I don't think earlier versions are quite designed for it.

I also like the increase in real-estate when browsing. Yes, I know I can turn my other browsers into fullscreen mode, but then I loose the address and search bars.

Actually, is it just me, or did IE9 practically copy Chrome's interface?

Chrome and Opera should be easily configurable to take up the same space as IE.

I did a quick comparison now, and IE takes up 60 vertical pixels for its UI, while Opera takes 62. Worth to note though Opera's (which is very similar to Chrome) method leaves a lot more room for tabs, and it maintains the dedicated address and search bars. For most people though, that makes little difference, and it certainly does look cleaner.

Firefox is a bit more of a mess here though - it does require some heavier use of addons to get it down to the same size, and doing so may sometimes cause other compatibility problems.

This is on similar quality output? Because thus far all HTML5 versions of videos I have seen have had appalling quality (video and sound) requiring the lowest equivalent flash setting to match, and draining similar resources by then, not to mention lots of issues with controlling playback; contrast to flash which even obeys my keyboards media keys (Play, Pause, Stop), and actually puts out decent quality.

Rather what was concluded was that the statistic indicated that 100m users had, AT SOME POINT visited their profile via an iOS device (since facebook does not seem to differentiate iPods and iPhones). Note the specifics here. It only requires a user to have logged in once. They could've done this years ago, and it could have been done on a friends device as well. All of a sudden that 100m number becomes a lot less impressive..

Mac OS doesn't really qualify as that due to the hardware restrictions (who can install it) and low install base (who has installed it: ~5% at most) His point is that Windows 7 (64-bit) is the first OS that is available but ALSO widely installed. Most (almost all) windows 7 machines installed on newer computers will be 64-bit. Windows Vista and even XP both had 64 bit clients as well; but what he means by not being widely availible was that they weren't installed by many users. This however ALSO includes Mac OS.

Its just our Routers and Switches that aren't keeping up with the times.

Generally no, PLEXes in ships are rare - since the only purpose of moving them is to sell them elsewhere (or give them to someone). If you buy one for real money yourself to sell, you redeem it at the location you want to sell it at (usually Jita). If you buy it for yourself, you just use it immediately. Buying PLEXes at one location and selling them at another is generally only profitable in bulk - because of the typically low price variety, especially after sales taxes and fees. Such bulk transfers are both extremely expensive to setup, and again - the risk involved is unreal. If you get spotted, you can be expected to be pursued or stalked for hours. A single PLEX is enough to buy most of the common advanced combat ships, including a lot of expensive ship equipment for it. If we scale the ship size down, potentially dozens of ships can be afforded by a single one. So when you're carrying several...

For shooters yes; Strategy games, many sims, and most MMOs are still very CPU intensive because of the volume of objects and things often going on in these games. WoW is bottlenecked by the CPU far more often than the GPU. Bad Company 2 is also very CPU intensive (So shooters can certainly go there if they want, they just often avoid it). And since some people also like to record/stream nowadays - its an even bigger consideration. Tons of people can't use recording software because their CPU is inadequate for their GPU/Monitor combo.

Just means that shooters have to be designed for less Y axis movement. Two of the perhaps most famous console shooters were on the N64 (Goldeneye and Perfect Dark) - and like the 3DS it only featured one stick. Goldeneye used maps that generally did not require looking up/down much, Perfect Dark required more of this but generally it was also done more predictably. In multiplayer of both games you could generally only shoot short distances across floors.

  16. Re:Nintendo may be king of sinking ship? on Nintendo 3DS Early Impressions · · Score: 5, Insightful

You need to do your research, badly. The DSi already has a Media Player, and it also already has a browser. We can expect that the 3DS will be no different. I personally am not bothered by an e-mail client - and I'm sure most other people aren't as well. I do not need yet another place to check my email. Second of all, the reason why something like the iPod touch won't be able to scratch much of the 3DS (and following consoles) market is because the Touch/iPhone provide very poor precision, response time, and absolutely no input feedback, not to mention that with a touchscreen system you have to block part of the screen (possibly critical parts) to play. Phones which do not use touchscreen input rarely (read: never) have good button placement for the activity. In addition, these devices are rarely designed to be held in the hand for extended amounts of time. They work for short 5-10 minute sessions, but after that they can start to get uncomfortable. These aren't problems in the much more simplistic flash-like games which consist of nearly 100% of the current smartphone market. But add in games with more complexity, and the issues for the format become all more apparent. Most fully featured smartphone games currently exist in current console games as minigames or Quick-Time-Events. The "Pokemon Marathon" which debuted in Heart Gold & Soul Silver behaves exactly like a fully featured game I would expect on the iPhone (it even uses touch control), there is even arguably more depth to it than most iPhone games. But this 'game' is a tiny (and ignorable) part of the main game itself.

That said, once IE9 is released - we can probably expect a massive adaption of it on the Internet "market". It'll take time; i don't think too many people and sites will be quick to replace existing flash content. Likely all NEW content and adds will be HTML 5 however. Eventually as site upgrades/renovations become relevant though, the remaining flash objects will be replaced by HTML5 components where possible. Competitive sites will likely adapt it sooner however, in order to gain the edge over competition in regards to usability.

I think the biggest problem with the Android market at the moment is its somewhat limited availability. You can't purchase apps in Sweden for example, and there are quite a good number of Android users here. Naturally, thats also going to skew the numbers that the article is using. You can't expect Android phones to have the same number of apps-purchased-per-phone, when a large amount of phones don't actually have that access to begin with. I think thats the point that the article is trying to make, although it doesn't do a very good job at it.
