  1. What's wrong with console.log()? on A Better Way To Program · · Score: 1

    Sounds like he's more interesting in finding the thing that will give "meaning" to his life, than actually caring whether that "thing" is sensible or practical. Go find love Bret, have kids and program stuff that makes a difference to other people's lives. That works for most of us...

  2. Re:The Government gave us a blank check on The Chevy Segway Keeps On Rolling (Video) · · Score: 1

    Segway was a failure because it's too goddamned expensive. Six grand? I only spent ten on my car. When the patents run out and they're a hundred bucks each, everybody will have one.

    Segways were a failure because they are about as cool as Toploader. Essentially, they are in the same psychological bracket as mobility scooters, which here in the UK are only used by the infirm, the enormous or the lazy. Not a good vibe if you want to gain respect / a mate.

    Why are the Slashdot "intelligentia" attempting to divine the price (in $) of Happiness? Is this an American thing? Mazlow's base requirements need quite a small number, after which setting an exchange rate between happiness and money is like comparing laughter and soap.

  10. Re:It's already almost gone... on Six Reasons Why Flash Isn't Going Away · · Score: 1

    In just the last few months, I have noticed a large number of mainstream news sites ditching flash, as well as automobile companies.

    I think flash will live on for a long time, on life support. However its days in the sun are over.

    In developing and supporting some of those sites, we have recommended moving from Flash to javascript/jQuery (note: NOT html5) specifically because of the need to be viewable on the many iOS devices now showing up in the logs. jQuery - slick as it is - is a downgrade though (slickness and functionality wise) and HTML5 is not an option either because IE visitors are still a major component (Chrome Frame is simply not an option for our customers too - to force users to install something before they can get at your precious content is an absolute no-no). If (and it's a big if) Android/Blackberry/Nokia/MS support for Flash forces Apple to change it's stance, we will be under pressure to re-instate Flash and it's lost fancinesses - and I suspect like recently cut nettles, it would grow back quickly (and be bigger than before).

  13. Re:Well duh. on RIAA Accounting — How Labels Avoid Paying Musicians · · Score: 1

    I used to be an artist on a Universal label, and I can vouch that the vast majority of artists scratch a living. It was an eye-opener when you're promised fame and fortune, then find that all bar the top 2/3 acts at a festival - including some "family names" - would try to nick your rider, or scrape around for food vouchers. Sure, if you're huge it's a virtuous circle, but it's all or nothing - there's a cut-off under which you make what I estimate to be about £18k / yr. We still "owe" Island records £500,000 - most artists NEVER recoup. I even resorted to stealing Peter Gabriel's toilet roll from his studio in Box at one point :(
