I would only expect the government to become more sane when it comes to technology as time progresses. I'm currently a grad student studying computer/information security & policy, and as a child of the digital age. I can say with confidence, that most of my peers (even the ones with government funded scholarships) are pretty level headed when it comes to "cyberwar" nonsense. There's really nothing to get up in arms about.
I think you'll find that most people who had to grow up through the Bush administration (and yes, Obama, too) have a significantly more sour view regarding privacy from government and fear-mongering, especially those of us in technology.
Beck is constantly encouraging his viewers to do their own research and to not take his word for it.
Yeah, but the problem is, he's encouraging his viewers to do research on issues that make no sense to investigate. And if his viewers actually did go out and research his claims, they would recognize how full of shit he is and stop watching. A 12 year old with a basic understanding of logic and reasoning could shut Beck down with his weak "follow the clues" logic. But that's not what happens, because people just want someone to tell them what to think.
Subscribing to news from both sides has challenged and changed my beliefs. It has also shown me how inane and childish the constant Fox / Beck / O'Reilly bashing is.
Please, just watch the Daily Show for a week. Or go out and search for videos of "Fox News Hypocrisy." Jon Stewart makes mincemeat out of Fox News almost every night. You'll understand why people bash Fox/Beck/O'Reilly. It's nothing but right-wing propaganda.
I haven't flown anything in 10 years, and "Over" was considered quaint even then...
I was under the impression that "Over" helped in that it let the other person know when your transmission was...y'know complete, not just so the other guy knew when to start talking.
I wonder how many followers that loud-mouthed ignoramus would have if the "liberal" media didn't get all flustered every time he says something like this.
I don't think liberal media has anything to do with since I doubt his viewers don't actually watch anything but Fox News.
I'm fairly sure that it isn't supposed to explode, per se; but if it doesn't stick to kids it just ain't the real thing...
It will stick if you throw it one someone (or some creature). But the gasoline won't explode, just burn slowly. On a cold enough day, it won't even light on fire.
Ah the book with the recipe for napalm that will according to legend blow you the fuck up.
Great stuff.
Its all fun and games until someone explodes into a ball of fire.
You mean the OJ concentrate + gasoline formula (even styrofoam + gasoline)? Friends and I used that plenty of times as kids. It's actually very unimpressive, certainly no explosions.
Whoa there. I'm not giving credit to anyone. If it were up to me the US would exert as much pressure on foreign oppressive regimes just shy of military action. But you said it yourself. Nobody should be imposing their will on a sovereign nation. So does that mean we should just completely ignore relations altogether? The fact of the matter is that Egypt's peace with Israel brings stability to the region. Diplomacy is a delicate thing. And if we had stopped giving aid to Egypt, that wouldn't have stopped Mubarak's rule. Don't make this out like it's completely the US's fault for Mubarak being in power for so long.
Yeah it's hypocritical, but that's no reason to ignore it.
...given the billions of dollars in military aid and training the USA has offered to Mubarak's regime - the teargas branded "made in USA" was just the obvious part.
You mean the military aid and training that went to the Egyptian military who have remained pretty neutral throughout the ordeal? Perhaps Egypt should have purchased weapons from the Russians instead?
“Amazon.com was asked to play by the same rules and has responded by eliminating hundreds of Texas jobs,” said Danny Diaz, a spokesman for the Alliance for Main Street Fairness in Washington, D.C. “Amazon could have chosen to collect the sales tax as Texas retailers do, but instead they opted to protect their special sales tax loophole to the detriment of hardworking families.”
Yes, the same families who would have been paying that sales tax in the first place.
What I don't understand is why Texas allowed Amazon to do business in their state in the first place without first filing for a sales tax permit. Amazon never charged it's Texas consumers a sales tax. So I would be hesitant to call this tax evasion. Ultimately, the sales tax would have come from consumers anyway, but you sure as hell won't find the Texas legislature raising income tax on its consumers.
Don't be so quick to blame the retailers for something the Texas govt. should have gone after long before they ran into a deficit.
Depends on whether they actually cracked the drives open and pulled the platters. The article is unfortunately ambiguous on this point; it just refers to them "tearing apart external drives" which may well be them simply pulling the drive from its enclosure.
The article is not ambiguous. Skip to the bottom to see a section of the US attorney's complaint.
Freeman then remarked, "I don't see how you get rid of this shit," to which LONGUEIL explained, "Oh, it's easy. You take two pairs of pliers, and then you rip it open . . . and then, it's just a piece of NAND."
"Fuckin' pulled the external drives apart. Destroyed the platter..."

The general technology at issue involves the playback of Blu-Ray Discs, i.e., the reproduction of data recorded on Blu-Ray Disc media. As discussed below, LGE hold patents addressed to certain elements of Blu-Ray Disc playback. for example, two of the Asserted Patents, the '080 patent and the '961 patent, relate to reproducing data from a recording medium, i.e., a Blu-Ray Disc, including linking areas and data areas. Another of the Asserted Patents, the '835 patent, relates to technology for managing the reproduction o f multiple data streams, e.g., multiple camera angles, that are recorded on a recording medium, i.e., a Blu-Ray Disc. The remaining Asserted Patent, the '398 patent, relates to technology for reproducing a text subtitle stream that is recorded on a recorded medium, i.e., a Blu-Ray Disc, and updating palette information, e.g., font color and opacity, for the text subtitle stream.
Jesus, does Microsoft have a patent for recreating font styles stored in a text document?
Seriously. Getting into orbit is one thing. Going to the moon is another. Is that even possible on a budget of $20 mil?

Why can't users just connect to their home network at download the content from the publishers' websites? This has the stink of bullshit all over it.
And ACTA?
She's using the terms interchangeably... this does not make me any more comfortable.
Actually, just watch this. It's a good start. http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-january-24-2011/24-hour-nazi-party-people

this article makes a case that IBM would be a potential suitor to AMD given their history together.

So...if it's used on us, then we should just not give a shit when it's used by foreign countries on their own citizens? WTF kind of logic is this?
Yes we should be upset when it's used on us, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't care when it's used elsewhere.

I'm sure there's a list of affected processors with the range of serial #s. Something easy to check.

There's so many tech companies suing each other (sometimes simultaneously for different reasons) that this really is just another drop in the bucket.
Make that Collio, not Busta Rhymes.
