But yes, basically all a non-technical person can do is that which:
a) Doesn't need technical knowledge. b) Those with technical knowledge are not doing.
Your post simply says "It's a shame and discgrace that thpse who are doing all that hard work of writing code and then giving it away are not also doing that hard boring work someone else could do".
Venture capital usually has more than 6% of the shares, too.
You say "Canopy representatives". I think it's more "Canopy representative" (I could be wrong).
Troll Tech is not pro-Linux or anti-Linux. Troll Tech is a company, they are pro-themselves. That is what companies are by definition. Ignorance of such obvious thing is a recipe for disappointment.
And I say that even though I actually LIKE Troll Tech.
Maybe you are not familiar with how corporations work, but usually, the company pays dividends to the stockholders (or not), but the company doesnt send the stockholders the companys bills.
Canopy did finance Troll Tech once, when they bought the shares. Around 1998, IIRC. You know, when Caldera was still a Linux company.
Yes, the idling is the biggest problem. KRN lacked lots of error checking on the network status (This was my first real C++ program, and my first network client:-). So, if the server dropped the connection, it basically locked.
Sadly I can not help you with your problems. It would involve installing a KDE 1.1 development environment, and it would be kinda hard to work on an app I don't use:-(
If you want it to be rereleased BSD after 10 years, you would still be 5 years away from getting Qt 1.0. And trust me, Qt 3.1 is a lot better;-)
And there are obvious ways to abuse the per-copy scheme you propose. TT has no way to audit or control your licensing, you could be writing a internal use app using this scheme, and never sell a copy, yet you get to keep it proprietary, and TT has made you a gift they didn't intend to do.
As for all the stuff about how TT should make the money or "change careers"... why? They are doing fine. They seem to be making money. Why change horses in midstream?
Again: why should they do it? What is in it for THEM. I know what is in it for you (or me;-)
KDE has changed window managers, yes, but it has been an evolutionary path. In fact, the author of the new one was the same as the old one.
You didn't mention the real one which was change of the file manager. But it was changed for a new implementation of the same goals, not a wholly new thing with wholly new goals.
I hardly ever run into a site that can't be used in konqueror. And since Apple is contributing the Safari patches, I would expect Konq to get even better.
About IRC programs... I find xchat's too loaded for me. But I am a simple IRC user. But what do you mean by bloated? Does KVirc use significantly more resources than XChat?
Juk is a specialized tool, it's meant for the guy with a bazillion directories full of music. For that job, it is very good.
If you want xmms, use xmms. The UI is completely unlike both KDE and GNOME anyway, and you can get a kicker applet to control it;-)
YOu start with an option where they may make no money at all, yet they have to give you support. Then, once you start to see that you will get money from your app (some of which would go to pay TT)... you switch to the other scheme, and they only get the flat fee!
What you want is TT to take the risk involved in the first scheme, while topping your expense at the fixed cost of the flat fee. No company is going to increase their risk FOR YOU!
Really, what you want is charity. Like the part about "I'd hoped Trolltech might have recouped whatever costs they have and then released Qt under something like the GPL"
Even ignoring for a moment that Qt *is* released under the GPL, why on hell would someone who makes a living selling a product stop selling it just because he has recovered the initial investment???? That makes zero business sense!
It's like saying "hey, I bet Disney has recouped costs from The Lion King, why don't they make it FDL?"
Your comment only makes sense ift the US only has invaded countries recently because of 9/11.
Since the US has invaded Iraq, that would mean that you believe Iraq was somehow behind or supported 9/11.
If you believe that, you should be able to show why you believe such a strange thing.
Also, you would be calling the US administration liars, since that was not the stated reason for the invasion. Or if it was, it was one of many.
Hmmm... I am not sure I understand what you mean.
The computer I described is about 50 times slower than a Duron 1.1
It also has at least 8 times less RAM, and 10 times less disk. And it can run as many rxvts (sorry, xterm is heavier) as you want.
I just tried it with 30, and it didn't even slow down.
I do run Linux on a P75, with 16Mhz of RAM.
It can do web browsing (graphical), play MP3s, read email (using mutt).
It even works as a mail server for use when disconnected (masqmail).
It has development packages (gcc), fancy text editors (fte).
It also has a 800MB disk.
It is a Toshiba Libretto 50ct.
Now, you may say, so what? Well, it's just as much a Linux as any other Linux. It's just not KDE or GNOME.
So yes, it is choice that makes Linux require a larger box. Because if you choose carefully, you can use a smaller one, too.
Here's the URL for how I did it:

Newbieeeeeeee!
;-)
And mine is not only way way way lower, it also has three sevens.
No problem.
You can also provide money.
Your post is stupid.
Well, system('kfmclient ...') is not a shell script, but I won't hold that against you ;-)
You want a C lib? There is one, too. Of course it means you are linking all of kdelibs to your app, too, and then, why not use it, right?
Today, creating non-C++ KDE apps is simple. Just get PyKDE. Loads easier than C++-KDE, really.
/wherever
Also, it is possible to use KDE's infrastructure without being a KDE app.
For example: ioslaves for network transparency.
Say you want to get a file through HTTP as if you were a KDE app?
Just call
kfmclient copy http://whatever
and wait() on it.
Want to open a file using the KDE mime-type associations? Just call
kfmclient exec url
Want to make your app use KDE icons for mimetypes and such? This one is trickier, because the helper doesn't exist AFAIK, but it is very doable.

Canopy doesnt fund Troll Tech.
Canopy owns some 6% or whatever of Troll Tech.
Maybe you are not familiar with how corporations work, but usually, the company pays dividends to the stockholders (or not), but the company doesnt send the stockholders the companys bills.

Of course you can, silly!
Let's consider a few examples:
a) Tom Clancy. He is a talentless hack. He is very successful. Mind you, he is a pretty good talentless hack.
b) Michael Bay.
The director that possesses the most incoherent cinematographic language in history. Armaggeddon: 36M opening weekend.
c) Michael Bolton.
Need I say anything? Other than he has sold like 8 million records or something insane like that?
RTFA. The very first word is "Bangalore". And trust me, this ain't Bangalore, Kansas.
Yes, it can be done. Use a VNC session on the server, then start a VNC client fullscreen as your session on the "sunray".
When you logout, all you close is the display, and the session in the server doesn't notice.
Yes, the idling is the biggest problem. KRN lacked lots of error checking on the network status (This was my first real C++ program, and my first network client :-). So, if the server dropped the connection, it basically locked.
You mean someone still uses it? I am shocked :-)
:-(
Sadly I can not help you with your problems. It would involve installing a KDE 1.1 development environment, and it would be kinda hard to work on an app I don't use
I thought this was an answer to MY post :-P
I am very sorry.
I am "diluding" myself because I don't know "who XML is NOT the easiest way"? Not to mention I didn't say anything of the sort.
All I said is that you CAN have hierarchical key-value files, which is, I think, pretty much a fact.
Therefore, stop arguing about random stuff, please.
Well, Borland got one that was cheap enough to include on $249 Kylix
Make that "those who don't expect to make $1500 ever".
Qt doesn't have a per-project license.
If you want it to be rereleased BSD after 10 years, you would still be 5 years away from getting Qt 1.0. And trust me, Qt 3.1 is a lot better ;-)

Uh.... KConfig?
If I read an entry for a font, I either get a font or an error.
Oh, well, it lacks the equivalent of enums and ranges, but it is a parser, and it validates.
Oh, so you can't have hierarchies in pair-value files.
Yeah, right. Wake me up when you feel the sarcasm.
What old mail program?
